Man Stabbed in Fight Over Game
Posted by Brian Crecente at 8:00 AM on December 22, 2007

A 37-year-old Tennessee man was arrested yesterday for allegedly stabbing his uncle in the head and stomach after the two got into a fight over a video game, Chattanooga Police say.
Antonio Castillo is charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault. He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant out of Philadelphia for aggravated assault. His uncle, Luis Alberto Santana, was listed in critical condition Thursday night.
Reports of the fight don't mention what game they were fighting over, referring to it just as a "Playstation game", or what started the argument. Brilliant reporting, screw the details, sensationalism full-steam ahead.

It's nearly christmas. It's cold, everyone's forced indoors together, often with members of their bloody annoying extended family. Alcohol sloshes around liberally, arguments get heated, and unspoken hatred comes out at inappropriate moments.
The only reason games are getting into these things is because you generate adrenaline whilst playing them. Anything with a mix of competition and suspense could cause this kind of trigger, so it's unsuprising that videogames are a trigger of violence. Still doesn't make them the cause.

I'll guess it's a sports game. You wouldn't believe how many potential fistfights and generally bad behavior stems from those games in multiplayer.
I say bring on the violent games = violent people articles. The more people claim videogames are the root of their evil, the more people will see what a bunch of BS it all is.
This guy's a dumbass. Out of the gene pool!

@dead_red_eyes: I was thinking the exact same thing...
The story with the teens and child yesterday was terrible; this one was sort of amusing, partly because the two involved are adults. Still sad, but man, stabbing someone with a knife over a game? In the head? I wonder if the man realizes the consequences of that.

I love how Child's Play generates shit tons of money for sick kids all over America and gets no damn press, but some jackoff stabs his uncle over a video game and it makes national news, complete with sensationalism about how terrible games are. The media in America is utter crap.

I'm betting this guy would have just as readily killed someone over a fight about a movie, sporting event, or other popular pastime that somehow doesn't get labeled as the cause when a murder is related to it. People who have been charged with aggravated assault are rarely paragons of self control.

@Syril:
It's different in some states but here is what i got from wiki...
The first scheme, used by Pennsylvania among other states:
First Degree Murder: A premeditated murder, and (in some states) murders involving certain especially dangerous felonies, such as arson or rape, or committed by an inmate serving a life sentence.
Second Degree Murder: Non pre-meditated killing.
Third Degree Murder: Any other murder.
The second scheme, used by New York among other states, as well as the Model Penal Code:
First Degree Murder: Murder involving special circumstances, such as murder of a police officer, judge, fireman or witness to a crime; multiple murders; and torture or especially heinous murders. Note that a "regular" premeditated murder, absent such special circumstances, is not a first-degree murder; murders by poison or "lying in wait" are not per se first-degree murders. First degree murder is pre-meditated. [48] However, the New York Court of Appeals struck down the death penalty as unconstitutional in the case of People v. Taylor.[49]
Second Degree Murder: Any premeditated murder or felony murder that does not involve special circumstances.[5

I want to see a list of family member vs other family member fights, stabbings, and murders over the holidays before anyone draws any conclusions about video games causing anything. You get these people who--often enough--can't stand eachother all crammed into the same house for the holidays, and this sort of thing is bound to happen.
I am fairly certain the reason movies at the theater are so popular right around Christmas is because you can do something with the family where everyone shuts up for a couple hours.

Ladies and gentlemen, i would like to send a big "Howdy Y'all!" shout out from my home state of Tennessee.
Is this normal here in Tennessee you might ask? Why yes, it is.
It is also completely normal to walk into any Walmart in the state and see and least 10 different guys with camo hunting overalls, camo hunting boots, a camo trucker hat and a camo t-shirt with the words "Git Er Dun!" on both the shirt and hat.
Please do not be alarmed at the lack of teeth these charming fellows have! Bubba Joe may seem strange, but he's just inbred. It'll be A-OK!

@Syril: Premeditation can be viewed as something as basic as walking upstairs and getting your knife, then walking back down and stabbing someone. I am no lawyer but basically it's having time to plan out an attack. Defining how much time is enough for premeditation varies a lot between states and even cases. And sometimes folks are arrested and charged with more serious crimes to make sure they aren't bailed out than what they end up being tried for.
