Marvel Want More Involvement In Marvel Games
The history of games based on Marvel characters is a patchy one at best, and that's only with Spiderman 2 saving their collective bacon. Perhaps because of this storied history of ineptitude on the part of outside developers, perhaps because the rumours surrounding Marvel Universe might just be true, the comics juggernaut are (according to Develop) about to get a lot more involved in the development of games based on their characters. Whether this comes in the form of in-house supervision of outside production by Marvel staff (the company have long-term deals with Activision, EA and Sega) or will see Marvel move directly into the development scene themselves is unclear. We're thinking the latter, if only because such a move has a precedent (the establishment of the Marvel Studios film division in 2004).

This could be bad.... I don't even like Marvel being in charge of their own comics anymore, nevermind the videogames.
LuppyLuptonium
@hawaiianactor: Am I the only one not interested in Marvel Zombies?
@kylenalepa: Joy! Generic fighting games FTW.
Shane
X-men Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance were really good too.
PownerOfNewbs
Shame that the license is split between two companies, I wish capcom would just buy the licenses back and reprint the DC version of MvC2 since the Ps2 and Xbox versions were terrible.
D3Anon
MvC3...that is all
MUA and xmen legends were pretty cool also
toneroni
Yes Marvel vs. Capcom 3 would be the greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeast and a Marvel vs. DC and DC vs. Capcom please creast these games.
Streeks1984
I was looking forward to Marvel Universe Online and the fighting game EA was making. Looks like neither of those might end up happening. Does Marvel have anything else in the pipeline now besides movie tie-in games?
LeChuck
Isn't the Beyonder a mulleted, mutant _and_ mist-exposed inhuman now, who had a passing fixation with Thanos when he was female?
Now that is the superhero role that Nicolas Cage was made for.

The X-men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance games along with Marvel vs Capcom were some of the best comic book licensed games I've played. They got me back into reading comics again. A couple other good games are Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Spider-man: Maximum Carnage. Both are stellar games.
Marvel doesn't necessarily have to open up their own games division. They just need to have a more hands on approach when it comes to licensing out their properties for these video games. Also have a good developer behind it doesn't hurt either.

I have to agree that MUA, X-Men Legends were great games... didn't play Marvel v Capcom. Punisher was a pretty good storyline too, I thought. Very reminiscent of the source material and quite playable. Really put you in the place of the moral maze that of the Punisher... do I let the guy go, or feed him to the sharks? ;)
There was a Spider-Man game (not the official movie one, which I wasn't too fond of) that was a good laugh too, for what it was worth. Not stellar, but good fun.
I'd hope Marvel's own in-house studio could bring more higher-quality storytelling like the Punisher game to the table... instead of Rise of the Imperfects contrivance.

I have played God's of War 2 this week-end with a few friends. And has been a blast. This game is truly a masterpiece.

I want moar marvel vs capcom. Capcom needs to get the license back.
shadydentist
Marvel's definately had more good games than the competition, but I think they want a Halo level hit, something that puts them on the video game map like Spider-Man and X-Men put them on the movie map. They want to be serious players, they want the crazy line ups, pre-orders and 4 diffrent editions of their games.
drifter13
@myxylplyx: yes, and i thought he'd died in Secret War 2 until the recent Illuminati mini-series, which was cool.
TheIrishNinja
Are the Marvel games really that bad? Xmen Legends 1 and 2 were great, Ultimate Alliance was really good, Ultimate Spider Man was good, and of course, Capcom's Marvel games were the shit.

Wanting to play the beyonder is like saying you want uatu to not have a big fuckin head or you don't want galactus to get hungry.
manjikengo
@myxylplyx:He's the bobble-headed guy, right?
Ed-the-Third
Eh, just give me a FPS team-based WWII shooter
featuring Sgt Fury and his Howling Commandos ^_^
relic1980
Yes, I do know who he is, and don't want to play as him. The Beyonder wouldn't work as a character, games need some structure to function, so someone who can fundamentally alter reality can't really work in a game. Or I'm wrong, always possible.
crim
Do any of you even know who the fucking Beyonder is!?
myxylplyx
One look at their website and you can tell that they are trying to shift their image from comic book guys to cross media guys. Comics are now divided into a sub-section of the site, along with movies, games, etc. Marvel is standing pretty strong with more of their properties in movie form than DC and X-man and Spider-Man being blockbusters. But the video-game market has been way more hit and miss, for both companies. I think Marvel really wants to get serious about the game market. Even as a life long comic book fan, I realise that the comics are worth less than the properties they are based on. The amount of people who actually read spider-man versus the ones that watch the movies and buy the merch is pretty small. So getting somemore good games out there before the competions seems wise (although i'm at a loss to think of a really good DC game in recent memory.)
drifter13
Aw, I had hopes for MUO. It's being made by some of the people who made City of Heroes, the superhero MMO that's actually good.
Sabre_Justice
Liar. Ultimat Alliance was FANTASTIC.
Gunhaver
Apparently there are no Beyonder fans here.
myxylplyx
Wasnt there a rumor of Capcom making a Capcom vs. DC game? Or am i just making that up.
I want a Moon Knight game. So i can throw moonerangs and fly the moon copter.
ArmyofJuan
@Ed-the-Third: Yes. But what about the others?! Injustice!
budash2
@PeonCulture: Or you could assume I don't like them. Though I did forget Marvel v Capcom, might add that to the post.
Plunkett
Marvel Ultimate Alliance, anyone? In terms of licensed games, the Marvel ones are honestly better than most.
Stormrider900
Two Spider-Women in that picture in addition to Stan Lee flipping the bird.
My brain can now asplode in peace.
Ed-the-Third
If Luke thinks that Spidey 2 was the only quality from Marvel franchises, then I'll have to assume that he hasn't played many of the other games.
PeonCulture
ps you guys're on about spider-man 2, we talking the movie game or that enter electro one? cause the ps1/dreamcast spidey was excellent, for what its worth.
TheIrishNinja
i second the marvel vs capcom comments, but honestly, x-men legends 1-2 and alliance were awesome.
i hope marvel does get more into this end, they werent making what you'dve thought they were off of their big movies (x-men, spider-man etc) but now theyve got a production house (i believe) and are retaining more control/$ from their properties, which the industry needs, so im happy to see them show the same interest here.
TheIrishNinja
Give me a game where I can play as the Beyonder.
myxylplyx
Ultimate Alliance was a totally decent game. And I'll let you in on a little secret: Storm plays AMAZINGLY well in the Wii version. Cast one tornado and you'll never want to go back... I'm just saying...
ajay42
X-Men 2: The Clone Wars is the ultimate X-Men game, one that all other x-men co-ops look to. It is a side scroller and doesn't have the RPG aspects of the recent ones, but definitely my favorite. Overlooked, but amazing. Emulator now!
Thwick
Spiderman 2, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, and Marvel VS. Capcom...hard to argue with results. Sure a few terds pop up in between, but some times they get it so right that it hurts to think theres room for improvement.
Maddmann
Stan Lee giving the finger. Excelsior indeed.
tristanthorn
Yes, agreed, Marvel UA and Marvel vs. Capcom = good stuff. But DC has had some pretty terrible games too. Either it's just a lot harder to be imaginative with licensed IPs or most talented people just don't work with them. Hrm.
And yeah, Marvel vs Capcom HD would be so ridiculously awesome.
budash2
@kylenalepa: you know, i'd pay 20 bucks for it if it was nothing but a port with online play and no load times. redrawn would be lovely, but consdering that its taking them years to redraw sf2, that probably wont happen unless its a full release for 60 bucks
hass
I don't care if you are Leon Kennedy, you are not beating Zombie Sentry.
I want a Darkhawk game.
Or a New Avengers game.
Bluur
@Bluur: Yeah, I know, but you know what might be more likely to happen, and almost as cool? A remake of it, along the lines of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, for the Xbox Live Marketplace and Playstation Store. I can see it now: widescreen, high definition, redrawn graphics... *drools*
kylenalepa
@kylenalepa: I think what you mean to say is bring back the Verses series.
Marvel vs DC vs Capcom would make my fanboy heart break. It's impossible.
I'd wager Marvel all-stars or some sort of marvel in house 2d fighter unrelated to the verses series.
Huginn
'storied history of ineptitude'
lol... luke, how many insecure teens have you convinced to commit suicide with this kind of talk? :)
giant_historical_crabs
@hawaiianactor: Holy crap, imagine, assuming Capcom could get the license again, a mix of RE4 and Marvel Zombies. That's be awesome.
kylenalepa
stan lee was never an avenger!
TheRemedy
@kylenalepa:
That will never happen, and I die a little bit everytime I think about how awesome of a game it could have been.
Bluur
I think this is a good thing. Spidey Three, Marvel Superheroes: Rise of the Imperfects, etc, there have been a LOT of bad Marvel games.
Of course nothing beats DC and Superman 64...
Bluur
I have a suggestion: give the license back to Capcom and give us Marvel vs. Capcom 3, for the love of God! Or Marvel vs. DC, something! Please!
kylenalepa
i would love to see a marvel zombies game. makes me drool just thinking about it...
hawaiianactor
Hey, I liked Marvel Ultimate Alliance :P
But yeah, Marvel REALLY needs to step up its games (or more accurately, Activision needs to step up its games.) Spidey 3 was godawful.
Also: Am I the only one that didn't notice Stan Lee in the pic at first?
Crippl3
What about X-Men Legends?
Both of them were awesome, you'd have to be insane not to like them.
It's essentially that most Marvel games, like most games in general, suck, and there are a few great ones.
At least it's better than DC, which has failed to produce a single decent game.
