Microsoft Keeps Quiet On Motion Controller Rumours
Microsoft was recently rumoured to be working on a motion controlled version of something courtesy of the folks at Gyration, but the folks in Redmond aren't talking. Reps gave Next-Gen the stock "we don't comment on rumours" response when asked about the XboxFamily allegations that MS was ready to ape the Wii-mote and SIXAXIS. If true (as Microsoft rumours tend to be) it wouldn't really come as a surprise, despite Bill Gates assertion that motion control is "not mainstream for most games." Remember those rumours that the company was pushing for a motion controller pack-in with Halo 3? While that sounded a bit fishy, it wouldn't be out of the blue for them to appropriate the concept for a future product. How else can you possibly imagine controlling the next Viva Pinata game?

This could go with the MGS4 rumors, since many ps3 fans say no mgs4 on 360 because of the tilty controls stuff.... hmm.

@Scazza: I actually hope they are researching motion controls. I just hope they dont tack it on all lame like. I mean, what is worse then doing the same stupid shit Sony does? If the Xbox 360 does it, I can only imagine it would be like the eye toy when it first came out. A feature only used in the game bundled with it, and nothing more...
But if Microsoft does it right, they could honestly make it useful. The people they have working on it have some awesome motion sensing technology and the stuff they sell always seems to get really good feedback. So, I choose to hope for the best, expect tacked on BS.

What is it with Microsoft and add-ons? Add on wifi, add on HD-DVD, add-on motion control, I mean at some point, you stick with what you put out to market until the next product cycle but these guys keep on attempting the perpetual re-do. No wonder Nintendo took their lunch and is never going to give it back.
First off, dev's barely utilize motion controls, even on PS3. Putting them on 360 is a pretty stupid move. Second of all, who the hell is going to want to buy a motion control add-on? I'm pretty sure that of all the complaints X360 owners have, lack of motion control is not very high on the list. Third of all, why does Microsoft continually do the same stupid fuck shit, continually possess the same lack of innovation. I mean this looks cheesy and it looks like silly pandering at best. If they think this is going to help them retake the lead in the console wars, they're joking. A more reliable, cooler, quieter console with less expensive accessories would be a good start guys, not shameless copying.
I mean seriously, everybody out there with the 50 dollar controller is just begging for something to "add-on" to it, right? Yet more wasted money on accessories? I can't believe how stupid Microsoft is sometimes.

Microsoft, leading in gaming and software innovation, from behind, sine 1987!

I expect a device to be like a presentation tool. A one handed laser pointer with some form of motion capture and a digital thumb stick or pad on it.
I really hope they dont add on to 360 controller. I will laugh real hard if they do.

@Drue:
That's God's way of telling you to
a) get some excercise
b) stop playing
or
c) you have wankers cramp
BTFzor_Freestyle
An controller add-on? Man, I hope that's not where they're going with it. A Wiimote one-handed motion control is much more natural than the two-handed SIXAXIS style.
If they manage to nail down 1:1 motion control with a stick, then I'll be reeeeally happy.
boopadoo
we all know its for the next xbox, or mabe a think like the scene it or guitar hero controllers that are just first party this time...heck u could the GH3 controller is motion controller because of the tilt.
Marked
Yeah, they should fix the D-Pad while they're at it.
cybereality
@EnigmaNemesis: Yeah, the Dpad is just insanely bad. I don't think they realized how bad it was until Street Fighter came out and people just couldn't play it. Up until then, it was always just a thing u use for selecting shit thats not important...
Scazza
I personally think, and I know a lot will agree with me.
What is holding this controller back from feeling like perfection in your hands, is the ....
ATROCIOUS SHITTY D-PAD
My goodness, is it a hunk of junk, and it really shines in all the old school and new type (i.e. Lumines) D-pad centric games.
Fix that first MSFT, it has been the biggest complaint about the controller ten fold.
EnigmaNemesis
Censored buttons guys? Geez... Kotaku needs to start feeding it's staff of monkeys that work for bananas more food because the work is beginning to suffer :(
I think a motion censor would be a good thing and they should go with more of a Wii type controller than a Sixaxis one. The later lacks the functionality that's suppose to accompany style.
okenny :)
Man, I honestly hope they are not working on motion controls. IMO there has yet to be a single worth while game that uses them properly on the PS3 (not a dig at ps3). Its just a waste and a tacked-on feeling control method. Everyone that owns one, loves the 360 controller (at least I do), leave it as is.
Scazza
a gyro type of motion controller would work well with light gun style games, FPS games and RTS games.
we dont really want mini-games on xo, right? we have wii already.
high quality FPS games with a mouse kind of control on xo, that's sweet.
htd
Being a PS3 owner I'm not always that jazzed about motion controls myself and I doubt MS will be able to come up with anything better that doesn't alienate the current user base.
Of course this will once again prove that Sony's ideas are continuing to be justified. First the HDMI ports and black casing on the Elite. With motion controls it's yet another reason to just go Sony.
incredibilistic
Instead of "ape-ing" motion control how about copying Splitfish instead? Stop jerking people around with this bullshit of enforced gamepad use. PS3 allows devs to use any control system they choose and so far I don't see multiplayer games on that system degenerating into "unbalanced" gameplay.
Cell9song
I'm still trying to get used to Prime 3. It's just my set up at home is so un-Wii friendly because I'm so close to the TV.
AcidBrandon
I think there's at least two things MS should take in mind while exploring motion controls:
1. Make sure it helps gameplay, not hinders it. I think this is where the sixaxis failed. The implementation was often imprecise or tacked-on, and unneeded.
2. Make sure you aren't losing anything in the process. As good as the Wii's pair of controllers are, the scheme only has one analog stick, and has only 4 buttons within easy reach of the player. Compare this to 4 face buttons, two triggers, and two bumpers of a 360 controller and you'll see why this is a problem. Last time I tried the system - which was admitidly over a year ago - I really got the feeling that I was on a Mac, back when one button mice were the standard. It's as though Twilight Princess suffered from "this button does everything" more than many 360 FPSs meant for PCs did.
Akin
@Torgen: exactly.
noyd_mcbennet
Forgive me if I sound too fanboyish, but if they didn't at least explore the ideas of competitors they would fail as a corporation. There are dozens if not hundreds to thousands of ideas that major corps mull over on a daily basis that never see the light of day.
May be the next round they knock off the wii, who knows. A wii with decently rendered non japanese characters doesn't sound half bad to me. until then i'll pass.
jc5680
@noyd_mcbennet: Missed out on Back To The Future 2, I gather.
Torgen
@JasonTerminator: what, you gettin' all defensive about your purchase? chill homeslice, enjoy your Wii..i'll stick to kissing sony's ass.
noyd_mcbennet
They're denying it, you know what that means here. :P

Honestly, the motion controls on the SIXAXIS while neat are completely useless. The designers need to realize they're there as a quickie so to speak... not to serve a great purpose.
Reloading, disarming, shaking parasites off, countering: all acceptable. But when you try to use it as a major gameplay element, it just FAILS.
1) Lair: sucked.
2) Heavenly Sword: I turned motion controls OFF during my first 5 minutes.
3) Motorstorm: who the heck drives with motion controls.
I just don't see how the 360 can benefit from motion controls, especially this late in the game. It just seems like they don't want to be left behind Sony and Nintendo.
DigiMish
I say forget about the motion control non-sense. How about releasing a controller with a decent d-pad. I'm having one HELL of a time pulling off my dragon punch :\
giovonti
Dammit, stupid tags and the whole not-working factor.
JasonTerminator
@noyd_mcbennet:
"You have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy!"
JasonTerminator
@Sonic_and_Tails: You have obviously never played MoHH2 on Wii, which is actually not that surprising considering that it's apparently a great control scheme stuck to a by-the-numbers WW2 shooter.
Torgen thinks AAA has lost all meaning
@PwningForFun: You should have read the whole post. Learn how to read. I hope you get the ban hammer you troll.
PwningForFun
@ara: You obviously have never played Folklore.
PwningForFun
how original...
Akmed
I'm not shocked, but a tad disappointed. The TeamXbox article seems to imply that it would be replacing the right analog stick, which is the pointing mechanic for shooters.
Duck Hunt + Halo, hmmmmm I'm a tad intrigued but doubt its actual usefulness
Sonic_and_Tails
@Witzbold: Well, the motion sensor is just like the rumble, most of the time utterly useless and irritating, sometimes excellent. Doesn't really hurt to have it on all platforms so developers can actually build around it instead of adding something half cooked to one of the versions.
ara
I have nothing to say yet, but I'm posting to see if it makes the rest of the comments for this page appear. (Yes, I cleared the cache.)
Anyway, controllers in videogames! Yes! Very important! Carry on!
Campion
I'm sort of interested. As long as the motion controlled games are clearly separate titles.
A separate, dedicated motion controller with accompanying games line-up sounds good especially because that still leaves us the good ol' gamepads, and most games will still be released without forced motion control schemes.
kryo
@NitrousO: What makes M''' so good is the pointing functionality. The motion sensing is good for short tasks, but the pointing is the real moneymaker, and there's no suggestion that MS is copying that part.
Torgen
@PriorMarcus: Their comment, if I remember correctly, was that they didn't need the "gimmick" of motion control to sell their console. I guess they they do after all huh?
krunkjuice
@DigitalHero: Hopefully they would use the new functionality well.
@Witzbold: Thats kind of what Im worrying about... that and shelling out more money to replace my current controllers if this is true :(
@Drue: Did you play Metroid Prime 3? Makes playing an FPS on a console quite enjoyable.
NitrousO
i really think this motion control shit is a gimmick for right now. maybe somewhere down the line, future gamers will look back on these days and laugh at us like i'm sure a lot of you did at the ngage..extreme comparison but only in terms of how embarassing it's getting. STICK TO CONVENTIONAL CONTROL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
noyd_mcbennet
@BD: I think theirs a pretty big difference though.
Sony said those things because they no longer had rumble in their controllers and couldn't. They didn't mean it and it was an obvious PR quote.
Microsoft made a comment about motion controlling that they have since reconsidered and MAY be taking steps towards incorporating it for their console - which they ALWAYS could of done so.
PriorMarcus
At this point, I really couldn't care for a motion sensing controller. I never really did care actually. If they put it midway in the console's life cycle right now I am truly going to be surprised.
Seven Is Darker
I don't know if this means anything, but they SEEM confident.

I hate motion control so much. Every time I play my Wii game I say to myself "Why can't I just push a button? My wrist hurts."
If the 360 starts using motion control, my lazy ass is going to flip.
Drue
@Shaoko:
I don't see Microsoft destroying the older control scheme but adding new functionality.
DigitalHero
Cough Microsoft Freestyle Pro cough.
Kenofthedead
Im scared once again...
Since really I do hope they actually do something "useful" with it rather than try to force folks to use motion sensor controls in games. :x
Witzbold
Just like rumble was "last-gen" for sony and they turned out to be a pack of liars, so seems to be the way of Microsoft in motion control being "irrelevant".
BD
Sony did it (not quite the Wii way, but it did it.), now it's Microsoft's turn, I suppose dual analog is now dead entirely if this is true.
Shaoko
Love the picture. I want to control Viva Pinata with a big stick. Like a real pinata. But my version of the game would be rated M for Mature.
