As if you don't waste enough of your time in a gamer's haze, here's Kotaku Australia: a gamer's guide that goes beyond the press release. Blogging the latest gossip, cheats, criticism, design, prediction. Don't get a life just yet.
The smart Sony ads continue! Here's a Gran Turismo 5 spot that has a family marvelling at Sony Bravia. The daughter suggests that they buy the television and "this" — which the father thinks means a car. She explains that she meant a "game." The father can't believe that he's been watching a video game and not regular television. The mother and the son chime in that it is in fact a video game. The sales clerk pops up and does a sales pitch. Love it!
Great, but instead of showing it on a $3000.00 1080p Bravia, why don't they be honest and show it on a 32" Vizio, since that is more likely to duplicate the "in-home" experience for most consumers.
@Iberianpower: OR..you can just make a japanese account maybe? Then you can download hot shots 5 too and others... anyway...yeah Im not really judging the entire game, just in my opinon ive never really enjoyed the series, and if I had to back down a few notches Id say, I liked the forza 2 demo a lot better than I like this one!
@Rondogg:
Sorry for the double post, but oh god, I know what you mean. I've been wanting to play GT4, but everytime I do, I just never feel like doing any of the license tests.
I just want to have fun with racing the cars, but the tests make you tediously work for it. I hope that they'll make it optional this time around.
@Witzbold:
Imagine how blown away he will be when displayed on an LCD HDTV with 120Hz... ;)
Actually, I don't think I've ever seen a game on 120Hz HDTVs. I'd love to see how it looks...
Seeing Ghost Rider and Planet Earth playing on those TVs are like being in the movies (everything was super smooth, like watching everything happen in front of you). I'd imagine the gaming experience would be so much more vivid as well. Especially for a game like GT5, where it boasts about the in-game graphics.
I just got back from Japan. This commercial, along with a few other PS3 ads were regularly airing. This one cracks me up though...the sales dude just popping up and the dad's expression. HA!
That was a perfect thing to wake up to after dreaming I was back in Japan. Except in my dream, before I could get on the train to Shin-Osaka, an attendant lady was standing in the doorway, asking for more money. I tried to explain that I had bought a ticket and put it through the machine. She then took my ticket and left. I knew I'd get stopped on the way out of the station since I had no ticket, but it was cool because I was in Japan again.
I always found it funny how japanese anime was always better acted than any of the dramas or comedies I watched. Of course, to get the utter cheesy effect, you have to watch korean dramas dubbed in japanese for the win.
BTW, congratulations to Japanese PS3 owners for having to wait till Christmas for online multiplayer, and GJ to Polyphony for actually taking it off their website instead of backhandedly replacing it like Sony, lol!
Oh man I want to visit Japan soo much! I'm willing to bet it's not that overacted as we think. Some Spanish soap operas seem overacted until you go to a family get together and hear all the aunts and uncles play their salsa music loud and get into arguments over stupid crap. I imagine this is a universal thing (cept fro the salsa music)
I wonder if Japanese people actually talk like that when they are surprised. GAME!!!???!!! *boooiiiinnng* So funny.
If Sony can make more of these ads over here and less of the 'ooh! PSP! mind if I stand over your shoulder and drool all over it?' ads, I wouldn't mind. Infact I'd prefer it.
that xbr4 looks really good. i want one. gt5 also looks good, but on a tv like that what wouldn't look amazing? please exclude the gameplay vid for time crisis.
I'm starting to like these new ads Sony Japan have been cooking up lately. Now if only they can do the same over here instead of the "shock and awe" tactic they are trying to pull with their commercials.
The same thing happend with my dad... I was playing the demo thingy for GT and my dads like wow thats cool how the camera follows the car like that. I said its a game.
he couldn't believe it. Then again he hasn't ever played a game or rather turned on a computer in his life. A very simple guy.
@ssjmichael: No you dont want to live here. Its expensive and crowded.
Oh wait so is NYC. ;D
----
Yeah that commercial is totally the average reaction of somebody who knows little to nothing about games. My father was impressed by GT4, I can only imagine what he will say if he saw a demo of GT5 running.
I lovee this commercial I think it's perfect. It totally gets you wanting to see the game yourself and it's basically the same reaction that many people will no doubt have. It's funny too.
I wanna live in Japan so bad :(..BAshcraft wanna trade locations? NYC is nice :)
But in all seriousness, I do like this commercial a lot. It makes sense to market related Sony products based on their best abilities; Bravia TVs for their clarity, PS3's for the graphics and so on and so forth.
You know, something just like this happened to me earlier where my mother thought I was watching a movie instead of playing Uncharted. When I told her I thought the guy was hot, she agreed and asked what actor he was. Things like this are amusing, go Sony~!
Though let me add that the sales clerk was kinda creepy... <<;;
Man why is it all the good ads i see are in japanese, *feels left out*. That japanese dad is priceless. I always figured it was easy for racing games to look real, not a lot of processing or scenery or explosions to hog resources right?
That was an excellent ad! Proof positive that the "advertising art of the 80s" isn't entirely dead. Did anyone else feel that? I was taken back to 1985 -- just with way better graphics. Hopefully we'll get something similar over here in the United States.
Apparently! But yeah, Back on topic. That works. I hope they don't end up over pricing this because honestly it doesnt' really cost 40. Around 20 or something. BUt yeah either way i might be a sucker and buy it.

This one would work so well in any language. Heck, I'd love to see an Australian ad the same as this.

Okay, so here's the rankings for Sony's best marketing campaigns
1. Japan
2. North America
3. Europe (Did you see the one with the poodle? Good.)
e_rich
@Rondogg: Different strokes...
There are better than half a dozen successful racing franchises out there. Don't like it, don't buy it. Play something else and get over yourself.

That face of the salesman was the best thing I've seen all week.

@muu: uhh...thank. I guess. I'll take your word for it. Not like I'm going to Japan anytime soon.

I have that TV, the Bravia XBR4. I don't know about the PS3, but the 360 looks great on it. Cute commercial too.

Great..
More hours wasted passing rediculous 'License' Tests and putting around with 80hp cars to EARN the right to have fun in a game you just paid $60 for..

My parents thought NFL2K1 was a live football game on TV.
Dreamcast > PS3
D00mM4r1n3
The thing about that ad is that it is actually true! My parents have reacted the same way to previous GT games (GT 4), but in HD it looks even better.
reddevil
@JesseLacey: keep in mind you just compared a demo to a full released game.
OniMirage
Now if they'd only get ads right over here. It's nice to see they finally advertise it as a games console though.
Winterbringer
Good advertising, sooooooooo getting this game (the king of racing simulation.)
Streeks1984
Why's dad always the dummy? Why can't Mom be all "That's one of them VIDEO GAMES?! HOLY COW!"
At least bad commercials and Bill Cosby's comedy are apparently timeless. Poor Dad...

@Capt-Fury-: Forza is a driving simulator.
Sony that's how to advertise. Simple, get to the point, nothing weird.

@muppetsausages:
Uncanny Valley refers to PEOPLE. Not cars, buildings, or other inanimate objects.
Quite annoying when people try to toss that out every time they want to sound insightful, when they really don't even know what the hell it means.

Haha, that commercial is awesome.

lol I can totally relate. My dad's face was just like that when he saw GT4. He couldn't believe it was a game.

Interesting, but not as good as the all-doing, godly octopus PS3 depicted in previous ads. *sigh* why did Sony let them go?
