Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:00 AM on December 7, 2007
Wizards of the Coast, creators of Magic the Gathering and holders of the sacred Dungeons and Dragons property are teaming up with the UK's Stainless Games to create an online downloadable video game. Stainless has done several games for Xbox Live Arcade, including Novadrome, Crystal Quest, and most recently Asteroids Deluxe.
"Wizards of the Coast has created many of the most popular brands in roleplaying, trading card and tabletop strategy games" said Patrick Buckland, CEO for Stainless Games. "We're proud to be working with one of the most treasured IPs in the games field in a true partnership which will produce a real gaming revolution later next year."Let the wild speculation begin! Is it Magic the Gathering for Xbox Live? An online version of D&D with downloadable episodic content and community created modules? We won't know until details start trickling out next year. Until then, something is coming. Hooray for something!

Judging by the direction the gaming world is moving in these days, I'd be willing to bet that the next gen of this kind of game will be some sort of combination of Eye of Judgement and real model-based battles. Gaming companies make an enormous profit off of figurines. The player lays out his army at home, the opponent does the same, the two battle it out on a computerized, animated landscape. Everybody's enormously happy because they can finally see their precious hill giant crush their opponent's halflings in tremendous, bloody glory.
It's the kind of thing the makers of 40K probably salivate over in their sleep, too. An enormous, online gaming system. They'd exponentially increase the competition among model-gamers, which means exponentially increasing their sales.

Anyone know any info as to whether or not Sony has a license for exclusivity with Wizards of the Coast? Wizards was the partner for Eye of Judgment, and given that Stainless is not just an XBLA developer, but rather a PSP/PS2/PS3 dev too, I'm inclined to believe they (Stainless) would be looking at something to begin building a presence on the other downloadable network.

$20 says its the online game board for 4th Edition D&D. Anyone want to take me up on that one?

Does anyone remember the card game that was in FFIX? I remember that was fun as hell to play; I wish Square-Enix would bring out a standalone of that game.

@Neo_Deus: I agree, I highly doubt we'll see MTG online for anything besides the PC right now. I've never played it but I've read all about the massive amount of bugs and difficulty programming new cards into the game and such. Future Sight hurt their brains very much.

I kinda doubt it would be M:TG on XBox Live, mainly because they already have a Magic Online game for the PC that it would really step on the feet of. Plus, they have a difficult enough time programming on the intricate card combinations for the PC, for Live, I think it would be too much. Then again, it could be more like Battlegrounds...*shudder*

@ampillion: It's clearly a wait and see. if it is a penny pincher where you put down 3 bucks for 15 virtual cards, then it'll clearly fail.
But if realizes it is to be a cheap and low cost game and not a magic online game (which I loathed) it's got a shot.
If you make it like the old micropose MTG 'adventure games' that's its best shot.

This had better be an online-playable version of the D&D miniatures game. Doom commands it!
Interesting fact - DDM is having a relaunch of their product line next April with a basically new (but similar) ruleset, new stat cards, etc. Would be interesting if each new figure in the line had a code that you could somehow 'register' and play online with. I know the 'online' component is going to be a big new element in their push of 4th Edition D&D.

@Huginn: If it's MtG, I can honestly say that it won't do well unless the boosters themselves are cheaper than their real world counterparts. Honestly, part of the fun of playing when I did play, was having collectibles, having something I could show to other card nerds, collateral to trade, even just the physicality of the cards themselves. I've played a few computer versions of the game, and it's just not as fun as the real thing.
It's sort of like the whole preference for physical game media. Many people prefer to have something tangible for their purchases, something they can hold once they see their money disappear from their pocket. With a card game, I can only imagine it being a similar feeling.
If I had a 360, I'd probably play this if it were a dollar a booster. Or I had the opportunity to win cards/packs through online play/tournaments. Otherwise, it's just ubernerd MtG all over again, except I don't actually possess the cards at the end of the day.

Just what role palying game did WOTC "create". I really hope they don't mean Dungenos and Dragons.

Companies always seem to make claims like this. What "real gaming revolution" can they make with this? What does that even really mean?

MTG for Xbox Live? Given how downloadible 'boosters' have worked for games such as rock band and GH, I can only imagine the havoc this could bring to my wallet.
