Baseball Star Retiring To Work On A (Wait For It) MMO
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 AM on January 11, 2008
Veteran baseball star Curt Schilling is nearing the end of his career. Unlike other baseball stars, however, he won't be retiring to a life of broadcasting, coaching and/or Senate steroid inquiries. No, he's going to retire at the end of next season to work on Copernicus, an MMO currently in development at Schilling's own 38 Studios. And he's not fucking around:
This is my life after baseball. After baseball, I will do nothing except be a father, husband, and run this company. While Copernicus (a working title) will be occupying his time for the next few years, Schilling also stated he'd love to be "intimately involved in making a baseball game...I will be a part of a company doing a sports game". You can't say the man does not have a plan.

Green Monster Games/38 Studios (whatever they're called now) is located like 100 yards from my house, in Maynard, MA. They have a pretty cool logo, but they tinted all the windows to their office black so you can't see inside.
What are they hiding???

@swirldude: If by "interesting" you mean "bombastic, condescending, egomanical prick" then yes, he's been pretty interesting!

Comprehending the sentence "Curt Schilling is retiring to work on an MMO" must be the fastest I've ever gone from smile to facepalm. Damn adverbial clauses...

From what I understand Schilling is a grinder type MMORPG player.

Curt Schilling has been an interest guy to follow over the past few years, but this still came out of left field to me.
@dechire: Stick around for Monday, will you?

@dechire: A baseball star announcing he's retiring to focus on game development isn't news for a game blog? Wha!?? O_o

Hopefully their eventual game is a sandbox that lets you blog and sound off on EVERYTHING THAT HAPENS TO ANYONE EVER. (this is a mockery of Schilling's blogging diarrhea, not Kotaku, this disclaimer is provided since this is a comment on a blog)

Very very old news.
I remember reading his excerpt on Gamepro magazine about him building a new mmo even before the 2004 choke.
It even had couple screenshots of the office with an artist rendering some troll like figure on a pc.
Ah I miss the days when C. schilling used to review everquest expansions as guest editor in gamepro.
On another note, he needs to get his hands off gaming and lose that weight.
I belive if he loses 10 lbs, he gets extra 2 million dollars as his incentive.

Schilling is a huge gamer, I live in Boston so I hear about it a lot. He is a loyal EQ player and is really into table top games as well. His company site is www.38studios.com . Check it out, pretty legit.

it would be cool to have a gm feature. then i could be steinbrenner and run a franchise into the ground. Mechanically, it would be interesting to see if you could really do a baseball MMO since a full game takes so long. Team vs. Team perhaps?

It won't be an official MLB MMO unless I can accidently use my "corked" bat during a game or be given steroids from my trainer without my consent.

I used to like him when he was on the Diamondbacks. lol No that is awesome that he has a plan for himself after baseball. Never knew he was into MMO's.

Schilling was one of the much-touted 'celebrity' EverQuest players, way back when MMOs weren't mainstream yet. So he's more familiar with the genre than a lot of gamers. More power to him.

curious as to whether he saw UBO, felt annoyed at Darrel Evans, and now needs to make something that doesn't suck after 4 years of development.

Can't wait for the Curt Schilling and Todd Pratt MMO collaboration. I remember Pratt playing Ultima Online and heard that he got all types of royalties from Origins at the time, castle included.

I'm not an MMO player myself, but Schilling said in an interview awhile ago that he wants his game to be, basically, platform neutral. That you should be able to check in with your character and the game world from handheld devices like your phone, even if you can't play the game properly. Sounds pretty interesting to me, but I wouldn't expect any less from Scythehands Voxslayer.

I'm personally surprised he didn't retire last season. Leave on a high note after the series win.

@wallapuctus:
I know what you mean, I work in the next building over (2 Clock Tower) and they seem so mysterious. I never see much activity walking around the place. I don't think I've ever even noticed an employee (unlike Monster.com which basically populates downtown maynard during the day). They don't even accept applications for employment (my friend wants to work there).

But, dude, he's working on the game with R. A. Salvatore (of D&D Dark Elf novel fame) and Todd (Spawn and a shitload of toys) McFarlane. That's like a fanboy dream team!

OH, reading this it makes much more sense then the title which I thought was implying he was going to retire to give himself over to his EQ2 addiction and gain 300 pounds playing it non-stop.

@AlKusanagi: Salvatore, sure. Todd is a huge douche though. [en.wikipedia.org]
What that link maybe doesn't make entirely clear is Todd's hypocrisy as he was a vocal proponent of creators owning the rights to their own creations when he made the break from Marvel to form Image.

Schilling has been playing hardcore EQ and EQ2 for years.I had heard he started an MMO development company last year so it's no surprize that he'll be developing his own mmo after his last season with the Sox.

Putting my own hatred aside for Schilling, I don't know if he'll ever go through with this. As EMTEEZ said, he talks A LOT. He's known for his yapping, so I question how serious he is about this- I'd put my money on him making a baseball game, but no going so far as an MMO.

You morons need to stop badmouthing Schilling.
Game 6 of the 2004 ALCS will go down in history as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, pitching performance in the history of the game. The guy put his career and future health on the line so we, the long-suffering, could finally see them win it all (there's video of me sobbing when the last out of the 2004 WS was recorded).
