Teenage Boy Hacks, Steals for Princess Dress
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on January 25, 2008
It all started with a gothic Lolita dress. A 16 year-old Japanese gamer has been arrested by cops from Tokyo Metropolitan Police's "Hi-Tech Crimes Control Center" for stealing 36 million yen ($US 325,000) worth of virtual currency that's used in online RPG Mabinogi. The teen obtained the ID and password of an employee at the Tokyo branch of Korean game company NEXON. With that info, he accessed the company's servers and filled his virtual pockets with in-game money. He allegedly converted amount 600,000 yen ($US 5,500) into real cash, which he spent on books and software. The teen has confessed, saying:
I originally wanted the dress worn by the princess, but I just ended up racking up a bunch of game points. That, and getting arrested.

This kids existence is exactly why more people in the world need to be Pro-choice.... if they were then maybe this kids parents would have averted a disaster that they will live to regret - their failure of a son.

@Anicode: I don't think it might be considered theft as its only data in the game.. but the problem is with how did he convert it to cash. The penalty would change drasticly depending on that.

If he'd only managed to get the pretty pink dress, his mad rampage would've been halted.

...used software from an illegal website to obtain the ID and password of a former NEXON employee, which he used to access the company's servers from his home computer last October..
I hate wen people download his cracking tools from illegal websites, wen you can get then from sourceforge or the original website:
I smell something absolutelly dumb on this incident. Like the nexon employee password was embeded on the client, or send to the client. Or is imposible to get it withouth server acces/attack.

Somewhat sad. I love the cheat in games: Remenber Carmagedoom? whas really fun to edit the vehicles, and make your vehicle 1000 Tm weight, converting it in a unstopable tank destroying everything :D. The propertys file was cyphered, but whas easy to break that cypher.
Also cheating on some hentai games, like Operation Cobra, to be able to see al scenes.
X-Com? editing the propertys file with a hex-editor, to make grenades explosion 255 power, so these anyong aliens can be found hidden on small rooms.
You sould not blame she/he the 100% (maybe only a 95%). Because is also important for the game devs to protect the game. Childs are childs, and If you left your ferrari open, and with the eyes in, and doors open, you sould share the blame for the results.

@huginn (XBL - WendingoPSU):
"Gather 'round, children! I want to tell you a story about the way the intertubes were 50 years ago... A man named Tay Zonday took the e-world by storm with "Chocolate Rain", everyone was chargin' their lazers, two women shared a single cup, and we had no chance to survive make our time.
Some called it madness, but we called it Sparta. In my days, we "pwned noobs" with rickrolls, and life was good. We used to debate endlessly about whether the internet was a big truck or a series of tubes.
Those were simpler times, and if I learned anything from those rip-roarin' days, it's that I pulled up to the house around 7 or 8 and I yelled to the cabbie "Yo homes, smell ya later!" I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air."

odd, I have 'American Girls' playing right now.
This generation is going to have some very strange memories in our later years. Between tubgirl this acceptance to play and be 'girls' and far, far more, we're going to have some some very odd memories.

Wait you can convert game money into real money?
Will this work for Zelda too? I've got a LOT of rupees saved up and I'd absolutely LOVE to cash it in. I've been playing all my life for this opportunity!

Heh, I'm a girl and I can say with 100% certainty I would never go anywhere near that far to get any item of ingame clothing. Or out-of-game clothing for that matter.
I do like my character's gear on WoW to match though <.<

I still don't get the gay connection - have you guys played an MMO? Would you rather look at a man or a woman for hundreds of hours of playtime? The guy probably played a girl character. Still, STUPID length to go to for in-game items, especially when these games are tied to real economies.

This is ridiculous. He shouldn't have to be in jail for that...he didn't steal anything concrete. I think they should render him in 3D and put him in a virtual jail.

Now if he had left it with the dress, maybe he wouldn't gotten in as much trouble (probably fines and stuff), but once it went into converting in-game money to real cash, that kind of crossed the line.
Plus the dress is "meh".

I'm still wondering on how he was able to cash out for real money...
Other than that so he played a female character whoopdee doo... Maybe that dress had some awesome stats on it... Hell haven't you seen those male mages running around in a "dress."
