Call Of Duty 4 Heading To Mac
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 7:40 AM on January 16, 2008
Oh dear, it seems that all of my reasons for not buying an Apple system are slowly being whittled away in the course of a few short hours. First EA announces Spore for the Mac, and now Aspyr Media reveals that they are bringing the third installment of Infinity Ward shit - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - to Apple systems this May. As an added bonus, all of the problems with multiplayer that have plagued the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 versions of the game should be pretty much ironed out by then! Hit the jump for the juicy press release details.
CALL OF DUTY® 4: MODERN WARFARE™ COMING TO MACAUSTIN, TX - January 15, 2008 - Aspyr Media, Inc. announced today they will publish Call of Duty® 4: Modern Warfare™ for Mac, a gripping modern-day action-thriller that deploys players into heart-stopping battles across the world's most treacherous hotspots. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare delivers unprecedented high-definition graphics, piercing 5.1 surround sound and a dynamic community-oriented multiplayer experience. Developed by Infinity Ward and licensed by Activision, the game is expected to be available for Mac in May 2008.
Featuring a tense storyline, filled with plot twists, the title thrusts players into battle like never before. With amazing special effects, including rim-lighting, depth of field, texture streaming and character self-shadowing, players are enlisted into one of the most photo-realistic gaming experiences imaginable.
The community-oriented Call of Duty 4 multiplayer gameplay features a robust leveling system, variety of unlockable perks, hot-join and matchmaking, as well as create a class and party capabilities to ensure that players of all skill levels can join in the fun. Additionally over 100 challenges and a host of new game environments and modes deliver unlimited possibilities. Infinity Ward has also included Kill-Cam, a fan favorite feature that they created in Call of Duty 2 which allows for spectator instant replays.
Call of Duty® 4: Modern Warfare™ will soon be available for preorder through Aspyr's website for only $US 49.99. For more information, fans can also visit the official Website, http://www.callofduty.com/.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is rated "M" (Mature) by the ESRB for Intense Violence, Strong Language and Blood and Gore.

@blacksamurai87: I actually can't get into using the MM, got it with my new iMac at work and was back on my Microsoft Wireless Desktop Set within two weeks. Too bad it can't option-boot me into the disk loader, I keep the slim as hell Apple Keyboard in the desk drawer for the once or twice every few months I need to do that (to boot Windows).
I did like the Apple Pro Mouse and almost every one they've ever done before the Mighty Mouse (I even thought the "Hockey Puck" from the original iMac was fine, if not the best), I just don't like its indeterminate nature. I've been using Mac's and PCs with single and dual button mice for years, and I can switch from using cntrl-click to right-click fairly easily, but the Mighty Mouse feels like a single button and works like a dual button device. It confuses my poor hand :(
Glad it works for you though.
@telekinesis: You forget that many of us in the graphics/art/3D design fields use Mac, and have sick Pro rigs at work that we like to play FPS and RTS games on when we're done working. We're the reason they keep doing UT, Quake, Starcraft/Warcraft etc, those games come out every time a few months after the PC version (except Blizzard, who does them simultaneous) because we keep buying them.

@Dresarius: Um, you're an idiot. I've been playing CoD1 for Mac from Aspyr for years and there is no such "Mac-only" multiplayer.
@telekinesis: I know. The only reason I haven't is because I'm still on an old PowerBook. I'm going to be picking up a MacBook Pro soon, I think.
@blacksamurai87: You're not a tard. I think the Mighty Mouse is shit, the two "buttons" never react properly, and the mousewheel is inaccurate, and it feels bad, but my tard comment was directed at the person who thinks Mac users have one button mice.

@fuchikoma:
Agreed. Aspyr Media is an absolutely awful studio. All of their 'conversions to mac' games don't play with their pc cousins. Meaning. You can have a great time playing multiplayer with the 19 other people who bought the mac version instead of just running it in bootcamp.

Doesn't even matter. The damage has already been done to Mac and Gaming many years ago. No one is going to think "Wow, COD4 on Mac, I'm gonna go buy a Mac" and those with Macs didn't buy them for games. The less-than-casual-gamer that Mac users are known for will probably not pick up a title like this anyway.

I'm a long time Mac gamer and yeah, the games that come out are limited, but due to efforts of Aspyr, and to a lesser extent, MacSoft, we do exist and we do have some games to play. I just now got through playing some CoD1, actually. I've just never been a PC guy, though I am a huge fan of PC games (go figure).
To whoever was talking about mice, you are a retard, I've never met anyone stupid enough to use an Apple mouse. The Mighty Mouse, while "2 button", is also a piece of siht, just like every other Apple mouse.
As for why it would be released on Mac when we can dual boot Windows, I'd say at this point not that many of Mac users are dual-booting, either from not wanting to bother, or not having a Windows install, or whatever.
For the record, CoD 1 and 2 both came out on Mac through Aspyr so this really doesn't come as a surprise. I only hope that Aspyr stays on the ball with updates, which they haven't done in the past.

There still not enough support as a gaming platform. Not to mention one of the key elements of a PC, the ease at which you can upgrade it to where you want it to be. A MAC gaming platform to me reminds me more of a console.

Too bad as a platform, it isnt too viable.
Ironic though, that it took PC parts Macs now, to get games.

@JustThisGuy: I think you just need to find out if there are Mac drivers for your card. You are probably thinking about the old days where the Endianess (byte order) was different on the macs. You couldn't just use the same cards. (Though you could on some if you flashed the firmware on the card. I did this when I was given a G3 without a video card.)

1) Yes, Mac owners can also be gamers, this is not mutually exclusive.
2) As my Mac was a gift and not my own purchase I may be what you could call a 'PC' wannabe, I use no Mac products other than the G5 tower itself and Mac does support most 3rd party components.
3) It seems, however, that Aspyr and Mac have given up supporting the PowerPC structure instead opting to design specifically to Intel chipsets. That being said, my Mac continues to be a WoW box and little else...

Sorry, I didn't realise that you were one of the 10 people who were going to buy this game on Mac. Calm down, breathe.... no one is insulting you.... just relax and think happy thoughts about your iPod.... my point was that historicaly Mac People (meaning people who use ONLY Macs, sorry if I wasn't clear about the reference earlier) don't buy enough games to even warrant making them in the first place. How many games are coming to Mac ONLY this year? How many last year? Oh yeah that's right NONE! And considering the fact that most Mac owners also run XP or some version of windows also, there is even LESS reason for a Mac version.

WRONG. Infinity Ward had the Killcam since Call of Duty the first.
They did not create it in Call of Duty 2. They used it again, because it's nifty and often useful.

Wow, it will only take until May for them to fix the multiplayer problems? Great to know that while I spend 30 minutes just to get into a game (because you can't choose to host and you can connect to several servers in a row right before they quit) on a "final" version of CoD4 they are busy working on playlist updates and other versions of the game.
When they said "after December" for the update I seriously thought January or February, but May? Seriously, fix your fucking game. Let me say I love the game and that's why I'm so pissed it doesn't work that well.

@Zeag: We'll have to see, UT3 runs ok on my iMac (the 2.8Ghz flavor, so higher end), comparable to my PC that has a 7950GT (512MB) at the same resolution with just one step lower LOD. Its certainly not built to smash framerate barriers, but its respectable for a machine not designed for the task. I was really, really pissed that they went with the ATI 2600 Pro or whatnot, could have put something a bit beefier in but then the computer would have been an inch or two thicker, instead of a looking like just a nice 24-inch LD monitor.
Thats why I have my PC, its a stopgap measure until next year when I can buy a Pro. Thats the thing though; I have to justify it as a work computer for freelance stuff, not as a gaming rig, because it will cost more. But damn will those dual Quad Cores (or whatever it has next year) will eat my high res graphic work in Photoshop for lunch....and they'll probably play a game or two, before I'm done with it. Mostly Starcraft 2.

I can already tell you that only the new PowerMac will be able to run this game at full settings. Even the highest-end iMac will suffer at high resolutions.
Mac aren't for gaming, not because they're not able to do. But because it's not a lucrative market for Apple, because they'd have to deal with the "need to upgrade my machine" trend that comes with most PC gamers.
And Macs aren't made to be really upgraded.

Also, Spore is definitely going to be found on this Macbook Pro as soon as it comes out. dont be fooled, folks! gaming on the mac? its really a conspiracy to kill gaming on linux (where there is HUGE potential). dont believe me? too bad cuz im right! linux gaming community > mac gaming community (no such thing as a mac gaming COMMUNITY). linux gamers have for years asked and clamoured for commercial games but companies spend dollars for mac dev? wtf?
theovercoatthatsgogol
DaiMacculate
Posted 8:08 AM 16/1/08
@theovercoatthatsgogol: Thats just silly. They don't develop for Linux because MS hates Linux (calls it Communistic!), and PC game companies basically live and die at the sufferance of MS because they control DX10. MS makes money on Macs by selling people Office 2008, plus they recognize that some of the best features they've put into Windows UI over the years are based on if not directly copying the Mac. The same has happened in reverse, its what competitors do, they take the best things the other guy does, put their twist on it so its not too obvious, and incorporate it.
Also, these games are mostly being powered by translation engines, not unlike WINE, so I don't see how Linux is any more hobbled than it ever has been in its ability to utilize the same technology. Don't you all run games in WINE anymore? I've only used it as a server OS, I've never played a game with Linux, so I'm sincerely asking.

Just as a sidenote, working in the creative industry and knowing tons of other similarly employed people means I'm acquainted with a ton of mac users. And these people are very much gamers and early adopters into technology. They may not be gaming a whole lot on their macs, but they're certainly above average in console gaming.
