Dead Space (And Probably Dead Space 2) Confirmed For PC
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:39 PM on January 17, 2008
EA's Dead Space - ie Resident Evil, or maybe BioShock, in space - was originally coming on 360 and PS3. Now it's been announced the game will also be appearing on PC. And then appear on all three again, and again, and again. EA's Glen Schofield:
I would definitely like to make future Dead Space games. I'd love for this to become a well established franchise; we've created a huge and rich back story and universe, so other games could easily be made.Wait, so they're already thinking about a sequel to an unreleased game nobody cares about and may completely suck? Since when can people get away with that? Oh yeah. Right!

@MasterOfPastures: I've played many games published by EA in the past. I never had a good experience with any of them. The only exception is Crysis, but that's only because EA didn't taint the game as bad since they became publishers late into the game's developement span. Every other game, though, hasn't really gone well with me.
Sure, the game could still probably pull through, but with the big EA logo slapped onto the front of the box, I can only dare to dream.

@Plunkett: Who are the developers? I wasn't aware EA had even mentioned which studio was working on it.

I care, at least its a new IP from EA. That alone makes it worth supporting. And dammit if a survival horror game in space doesnt sound cool, and no Dino Crisis 3 doesn't count.

@Stormrider900: Let's just say the style of game and the timing of its announcement are a little suspicious, particularly considering the developers.

@Trochan: If approaching every product they put out with a large ammount of disgust is your idea of proper motivation for them to create "quality" games that you will in turn not touch AGAIN because of your said disgust for them... how can they know how to make better games?

I don't get why this is suddenly Bioshock in space. Is it because the guy is wearing a mask with lights on it? Is that all that it takes to be a Big Daddy now?
In any case, I'll reserve judgment until we start seeing more of the game. Gameplay footage would be a start.

I didn't even read the first paragraph. Why? It contained those two vile letters that have plagued the gaming industry with pointless crap and low budget titles.
Sorry, EA. I would buy your products if you put more quality into them.

I have no idea how anyone can say this is going to "suck" without a demo or a playable preview...
Also, can we move on from "its like zelda meets god of war meets pokemon!" bullshit. Lazy.

Hmm?
Who gives a crap?
I'm too busy getting prepared for "Next-Gen Kirby 3"
That's right! I'm exited for the sequel, to a sequel, to a game that doesn't even exist theoretically.

Well i guess i only stand with a few people who seem to be interested in this game. Survival Horror in space seems pretty cool to me. Especially when it's on an Alien like ship with The Thing type monsters.
And like someone said previously, as bad as EA may be at (most) times, we shouldn't really bash everything they do before it's even out of the gate. Especially when it's a new IP that shows some promise.
I anxiously await the demo

Of course it is confirmed for PC, and they've already green lighted twelve sequels. It's EA. I'm still mildly interested in this game.

Microsoft didn't own Bioware, so they couldn't have sold them to EA. Bioware was a private company that had a publishing deal with Microsoft for Mass Effect. Big difference.

The EA rules have spoken!
the game must be ulti pluri multiplatform
the game MUST suck!
the game must be released every year!
The only question still going through my head is..Microsoft.....WHY THE HELL DID YA SELL BIOWARE TO EA???!!!...sigh...I hate you...:'(

For me the Boshock moniker doesn't work. There was nothing aboutthat title that made me jump. Sitting in front of the big screen with all the lights turned out...nothing. But with Dead Space, in broad daylight the trailer just had that atmosphere.

I have to admit I'm a sucker for a survivial horror game, but this did look as if it had a few cool ideas; I seem to remember you couldn't pause the game to add tension and there seemed to be well thought out replacements for displaying health/ammo rather than via the HUD. I know EA have a bad rep, but I've just got a good feeling about this.

The thing to remember about EA is that they run good games into the ground year after year rather than bring out games that are shitty from the word go. So there is hope for Dead Space, but it the franchise will be stale by Dead Space 3.

From what I've seen and heard, I think Dead Space is going be exciting. Who cares if it mimics other franchises, I'm all for getting the shit scared outta me. And heck, gotta support a game developed in Australia :D

@QC8472: I think you mean that System Shock at the bottom of the ocean is Bioshock. I like Ayn Rand as much as the next guy, but really. We all know where the original design came from.

I remain cautiously optimistic on this one. The art direction looks excellent, even the main character is creepy. Some gameplay videos would be nice though.

Dead space is going to kick ass if it keeps its promise of having a version of every single gun in the history of FPS's. I would love to have the combine pulse rifle of HL2 but be able to have a larger ammo capacity. But it's possible that all those guns can mean that a lot of em could be half assed, so i won't get too excited.

I think this game has a lot of potential. They've named a solid list of influences, they have a grasp on making it scary by eliminating the 'it's a badass' factor, and the monster designs (cutting off apendages having real time effects) is something that sounds like a good mechanic. Still, who knows. There have been many games that promised awesomeness but couldn't deliver.

@LordMaim: I was refering to the article, which said "EA's Dead Space - ie Resident Evil, or maybe BioShock, in space". Bioshock in space is still system shock, it's just older, that's all :)

Whilst it's cocky to talk about a sequel before the first game is even released, isn't it just as bad to bash it before we even get to play it?
As for Kane and Lynch, the massive sales might indicate Eidos made a wise investment.

am remaining optimistic on this one.. SS2 is the space horror game to beat..
speculating about a sequel seems ok since they think they've created something unique, BUT, whatever happened to the good old fasioned expansion pack? make a few more levels and tie them to the original story. sell it for $20 then move on with all your talent and create an even better NEW game with what you learned..
go milk a cow..

It is an internal team at the redwood shores studio.
The team making this game is the same team that made James Bond: From Russia with Love. They are also the same team responsible for Blood Omen 2 (not soul reaver), on the Ps2.
Take that for what it's worth.
