Far Cry 2 A Triumph Of Zebra Rendering
Ladies and gentlemen, Ubisoft presents the most realistic looking zebra ever included in a video game. For years the industry has striven to bring photo realistic striped plains horses to your console and PC, always reaching but never grasping that elusive spark that could breath life into these majestic animals. The spark has now been found. Far Cry 2 of course swaps the jungle environs of the original game for sweeping grassland vistas, because cityscapes are overdone and Lost Planet already had the snow thing locked in. Be prepared to explore some of the most breathtaking scenery you've ever seen in a game, and maybe set fire to it. Hooray!

You know, I didnt realize that Far Cry 2 isnt being developed by Crytek, and that its not even using the Cry Engine.
Far Cry 2 is a bastard child. I wonder how well their new engine will compare to the Cry Engine 2.
Altima NEO
oh, yay, yet another game i wont be able to play without buying a whole new computer!
and another game i *MIGHT* wont really want to play anyway :P
jtraveller
@DefenderShip: Windwaker?
dowingba
OOH BUSH FIRE!
Looks interesting - especially if I can camp fire me some zingy zebra giblets :)
TurtleSoup
@Rurik:
I was thinking the same thing! Throwing things through shacks is the new arbitrary shooter standing next to explosive barrels. If I could just throw one beautiful zebra through one shack, this game is a purchase. Plus, that gazelle got no love.
finalgearsolid
For a second, I thought that the title said "Most Realistic ZELDA rendering" which in turn made me go "OOH, Ocraina of Time Hylian fields!"
But this is good enough.
HotFootMcCook
Why it was just the other day that I was discussing with my friends how much I'd love to shoot a realisticly rendered zebra in the face. Ubisoft makes dreams come true.
J-Fro
@purdy: LOL XD...
tocatl
So half way through do the zebras sprout rocket launchers out of theri asses?
ianken
Well I thought it looked nice :S
I bet we get at least another 2 generations of graphics cards before it gets released though.
Anaardvark
Uh... wow... a Zebra... yay? As for the "graphics realism level" I'd say you can still tell it's not real life, which is a good thing, however I don't see why people want to have video games look realistic, but that's just me.
Shaoko
Got nothing on World of Warcraft Zhevras. Now that's beauty.
idkmybffgreg
Hah! Beautiful. Nice trailer for a trailer.
kevinyung89
@purdy:
Lol at that.
And on another note, I have no idea what the first Far Cry is about...so im not sure if I should be excited.
rexor0717
It's like PS3's Africa, only with guns... and existence.
purdy
@demonwolf: It seems as if this is NOT a triumph of zebra rendering after all.
@Black_Ops_19: Hah, I thought the exact same thing. The cleft windows and ladders made me think of Assassin's Creed, too.
negativebro
Its sad to think that most of us who have a PC that can run far cry (not me) will soon be thinking of ingenious ways to kill it and posting them on youtube....DO IT
Lordchris915
Someones been mocapping zebras.
Dudemeister
@tei: Woah! we do have new buttons o.O
d1sco_d3ath
Looks good but it's walking like it needs a shit
monkey11477
Pretty, nice work. and.. he!.. we have new buttons here on kotaku! :D
tei
@dead_red_eyes: the theme of the monster being brought out in people that connects the two, far cry one the monsters were literal and in two, its a metaphor or whatever.
SwindleUK
Ubisoft Montreal has a motion capture studio.
I'm sure they just brought in some zebras and
stuck all those white balls all over them.
Sullyville
Wee!? Nice looking zebra, really...
Now, I want to know if I can ride the zebra...
Hades
heh barely a trailer for the game...but it's good to see games exploring some new geographical locations.
djcoffee
they need some motion captured naturalness
holysocks
i just love zebras. Always wearing black & white
TaMs
Great looking graphics, can't really say anything special about the zebra, it's the same quality as the rest of the footage. Clearly game graphics, but damn good one. I especially like the honest tones, much more controlled "HDRI" than most of the recent games, only sky is blown overbright.
ara
@Moonshadow101: Touche sir! I am ALWAYS judging a games water! It's just one of those things, ever since Wave Race 64, I'm always looking to see who can do water the best. Is that weird of me?
Awesome looking trailer though, we'll see if the final product can pull some "Crysis"-like delivery
DonFubar
This game makes Afrika look like shit :D Hope it doesn't have Crysis-like system requirements.
okenny :)
@Rurik: One can only hope.
brello
Can our character get sick from inhaling the smoke from burning grass/villages? That would be fucking amazing.
bando
Zebras were harmed in the making of this demo.
DELICIOUS_BUNNY
That zebra looked amazing, as well as the gazelle. I wonder what other animals will be making an appearance.
dead_red_eyes
What I don't get is that if it has nothing to do with Far Cry 1, and no recurring characters, then why they hell is this game called Far Cry 2?
dead_red_eyes
My computer doesn't have the spex to run this video. I have to custom build a rig to examine this alleged zebra (and the alleged gazelle).
nbraccia
mmmm don't know about the zebra but that gazel looked good enough to eat!
f0cus
that is one good looking zebra!
hrabbit
MANGO ZEBRA!
ichiban1081
WEll, I'm impressed.
WiNGSPANTT
The animation on both the zebra and gazelle was stiff and unnatural. The environment on the other hand was gorgeous. At least, it seemed that way!
Atheist Jew
I'm going to cut through the post-processing here, and say that everything I've seen from this game so far looks extremely dated, definitely looks similar to Far Cry, which is to say decent, but with the gameplay I've seen so far and the rumors I've heard... meh.
They made a bad choice by working with the CryEngine (The only reason why it's called something different is probably for legal reasons.).
Chirphin
@Hickeroar: It's running on Dunia. The whole point of the trailer is too debut the Engine.
Arthois
at what point to you become so arrogant that you have to make a trailer for a trailer... It's not like we're talking about a game with a history that deserves this kind of treatment. It's Far Cry, a generic FPS that wasn't really AMAZING to begin with. The worst part? this will give those games that deserve this treatment an excuse to make trailers for the trailers of the trailer... damn it and now my brains leaked out my nose. THANKS UBISOFT!
Herret
@WaterMedia: It's running the Dunia engine which is something Ubisoft cooked up. Crytek has Crysis and Crysis 2 to worry about so now they're whoring out FarCry to Ubisoft. But the Dunia engine is totally gonna to support Philips Ambx technology. So get ready to plug those fans in!
tristan_the_giant
I'm shocked that this game would take place in Africa. It's clearly going to be a game where white men African animals. Anything to make little kids hate Africans, right? You gotta get 'em while they're young!
Kidding. But seriously, if people do to this game what they did to Resident Evil 5, I will be quite upset.
BtownDesignGuy
interesting. the after effects made it hard to appreciate it, but looking good none the less!
djbrandon
So, if this game will be set in Africa, I'm sure there'll be plenty of black people to kill, which means that it won't be long until someone complains that the game is racist.
Carroceiro
the only thing that impressed me was the tail flickering. i don't know why, but it was kick ass
hawaiianactor
Looks nice, but that was all I thought Far Cry 1 had going for it. Let's take this tech and throw it at Max Payne 3 or Dungeon Keeper 3 or a new X-COM.
smitty1123
15 years ago when I was playing NES and Genesis, if you would have told me games would someday look this great I would have crapped my pants with glee.
Now I kinda wish they could just be simple again.. :(
WrenixPhight
Some interesting things about the trailer:
The "DUNIA Engine", Dunia in Arabic and Urdu means "World". So, its the World Engine. Seems like Ubisoft is using their "multicultural team of various faiths and beliefs" in this game too...
Also, even though it looks like the heart of Africa, the trailer starts off with some Arabic recitation. Thats not to say theres not a lot of Arabic speaking people in Africa, but that it tells a little about what the story will be about...maybe a Rwanda-like conflict against rebel troops. Maybe this game will be a bit more politically charged than the sci-fi romp that was the first Far Cry...
Zaid
[Braces for the awkward controls of the Zebra riding sections.]
WaterMedia
@Winterbringer:
Uh, isn't it running on the Cryengine2?
Hickeroar
I watched the video. The animals looked ok. That Gazelle looks pretty fake. The zebra didn't really jump out as me as the best looking zebra ever rendered but it very well still could have been I guess.
AleeYun
Ever since seeing Afrika trailers, I've been really wanting a game set in Africa. I really, really want to play a game set in Africa. And have no idea why. I am totally getting this when it comes out.
Krondonian
Mutant Zebras!!
Wait, didnt they say..?
Aaaawww.....
MasterOfPastures
Whatever. I'm still holding out for Afrika.
Cardigan Square
dude, thats a pretty sweet gazelle too.
teh_joe
Damn that's a good looking Zebra.
EightBit
So, Zebras are the new Water?
Moonshadow101
@Moonshadow101: Naw, plants were the new water. Now Zebras are the new plants. Pink is the new black! Grey is the new lighter grey! Yaaaay.
Rockstar Ghede
The key to realistic looking zebras is that every one of them has a different stripe pattern. That's how they tell each other apart.
Afrika didn't use enough different stripe patterns. It's not a factor if there's only one zebra on the screen like in this video.
Kohath
I'm not entirely impressed here and why is it called Far Cry if it's not on the Cry engine?
Winterbringer
Uhm. Where's the Shooting and the KIlling? Isn't Far Cry about Shooting and the Killing?
Dresarius
@kw4k:
A better Idea would be to build a PC capable of handling Crysis well and this will work fine.
Hickeroar
@Klaymen:
"Somewhere the Afrika team is crying."
Probably while Sony's marketing department asks them how hard it will be to add rocket launchers before ship.
TrettOff
The graphics in the town area looked straight out of Riven/Myst 3: Exile. Very pretty.
Hickeroar
Looks good but I think the animators need to watch more animal planet. Most plains animals don't move that quickly. The gazelle looked scared shitless even though it was seemingly alone ( which is also a problem in that the only time you see a lone gazelle is when its having its neck crushed by a lion. Good start guys just amp up the realism by remembering the way that these animals live not just how they look.
slapBOXmaster
hm... i was planning on upgrading my pc soon. perhaps i should wait until this comes out?
kw4k
I'm sorry, was I supposed to be impressed by this?
PissedPS3Fan
A zebra would munch on grass a lot and I saw none of that so this is much less impressive than I thought it would be.
demonwolf
@Fenderfuel08: Word. It's pretty, but not Crysis pretty.
tristan_the_giant
that was just an animated Bullshot!
so much post prod was done on that - anyone can see that. The lighting seemed totally off on the buildings, poor textures on the walls also.
Not as impressed as i thought i would be.
Duophonix
Crysis WHAT ?
Hehe.. that should me Assassins creed What ?
suffer1989
Where's the people? Town=people
but no people...
only a zebra and a gazelle
:(
and vegetation
futurexrisen
I would do it with that Zebra.
I mean..uh, nothing *runs*
jiSh
A trailer for a trailer?
dagnasty
Are the Zebras "destructable"?? Please Lord let it be so.....
SithNinja
Apparently, none of you have witnessed the real-time "Zebra nuts" rendering that Afika is known for:
Quite remarkable.
Buttah
A game where you can set brushfires? Finally.
KamiKazeRabbit
Wheres the mutant zebras?
Rajio
@Fenderfuel08: Naturally, the African plains are very sparse, with few trees after all. They ought to just put more effort into creating even better-looking shaded grass and fur instead.
Nintenboy01
no, definately not pre rendered. Crysis is a little bit better looking, as it looks the same but instead of 3-4 trees per shot like in this trailer there are trees in the upper hundreds...at some points you'll have around 200 palm trees on screen at once if you'e in certain loacations. And each one of those palm trees' fronds has a shiny gloss effect when hit by the sun and each frond individualy moves in the wind.
Point is, graphics like the ones found in this far cry 2 trailer are completly possible. @dowingba:
Fenderfuel08
* Dials up Quanell 10 ...err X*
[en.wikipedia.org]
Seiven
Pretty nice. I'd be much more impressed if they had rendered Yipes, the Fruit Stripe zebra.
shipwreck
Hopefully they can get the lions and other predators to look good. Real-time cats always seem to have something wrong with how their faces look...
Nintenboy01
@jacksinn: oooo good point, and does that make room for a class action racial lawsuit?
I am taking petition signatures NOW!!!
Sign below if you feel Ubisoft's photo realistic zebra perpetuates racial tensions by NOT telling us if it is white on black or black on white!!!!!

Now can I turn on super strength, choke the zebra and throw it through a shack?
Rurik
Somewhere the Afrika team is crying.
Klaymen
Bah ... get back to me when they make games that use dedicated zebra rendering hardware.
Throtex
black and white stripes never looked so good
Fatal_CC
They managed to "breathe" life into it then?
Cad06
Can you set fire to a zebra?
MonorailCat
The video was so heavily filtered with that vintage effect that you couldn't even look for the flaws in the zebra.
ZeroTheFool
They look good, but still kinda plastic-y. Are they using UE3?
Spoit
So I wonder if they started with a wireframe in white or in black.
jacksinn
We better not find out that was pre-rendered because that was ridiculously gorgeous.
dowingba
@jtraveller:
Yeah, I also HATE when I can't play PS3 games on my PS2, and that Powerglove doesn't work with all the newest Wii games.
Welcome to a world that moves forward.
Malmer
Afrika dead even before release.
Hunting with grenades wins it all.
Malmer
It's clearly a Zebra murder simulator for kids.
GOLD5
Can we kill Zebra?
If we can, so may be the game will be banned by the order of some-zebra-protection-organization.
shadow_judge
I guess the new locale to over use this year is going to be africa
Kounji
This game sounds great to be sure. But whenever I see a game showing off how accurately it can recreate places and animals, rather than being impressed, I start to wonder if maybe I should just take a walk outside.
Luziphir
I'm really looking forward to a free-roaming FPS, but I hope its more straightforward than STALKER...
sprials
It'd be interesting if Alone in the Park and Farcry 2 both suddenly decided to get on the fire-physics boat. Let's have a summary...
Water physics in your face: Bioshock and friends.
Earth physics in your face: Fracture
Fire physics in your face: Alone in the Park/Farcry 2
Wind physics in your face: ?!?!?!?!??!
Just make a game with Heart and we'll be getting Captain Planet all up in this business.
DefenderShip
Fuck zebras, I want realistic Elephants in an FPS! Yeah, and I want the elephants to have nanosuits!
DugDawg
So... is it a hunting game now?
Maiken
Is it just me, or does that town look a lot like ... Assassins Creed's main town?
Black_Ops_19
I'll be buying this game for the zebra alone.
Bauske
