Finally, Pole Position Comes To iPod
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 1:20 PM on January 23, 2008
Remember iPod gaming? Yes, it continues to be quite the punchline, but publishers are still giving it a go, with Namco releasing Pole Position Remix via the iTunes store today. The driving game controlled with the (get this) iPod wheel is receiving nothing short of piss poor to five-star rave reviews from those who have purchased the arcade remake and taken the time to comment on iTunes. Klee3 says Pole Position Remix is "[the] worst of all the iPod Games that are available now" but razor pod writes "this game is hot so fun and not very hard to control (for Me) so this game is really fun." Looks like someone's having so much fun they can't be bothered to punctuate! Very telling.
It's priced at $US 4.99, which should make many of us thankful for more reasonable prices on fully-featured games via Xbox Live and PSN. Sorry folks who don't have a iPod Nano with video, iPod Classic or fifth generation iPod, you're out of luck.

portable gaming is a joke... cell phone games are lame, but ipod gamers take it to a whole new level

Don't you mean you're in luck if you don't have an iPod nano, iPod classic or 5th generation iPod? Because then there's less danger of accidentally playing this?

Wait? They actually charge you to play games with your ipod?
I now hate proprietary software .07% more.

How much was it on XBLA... I wasn't even aware it was out. I guess it didn't follow the 400pt model for retro games though I can't understand why anyone would pay that much for pole position. There's a dirty strip bar joke but I'll leave it alone :(

I used to laugh at the idea of playing games on my iPod... and then I bought Phase. I might try this for five bucks.

Ahh, 4.99? Thats a 1/4 the price of the iPod Touch's upgrade and yet its STILL not available for it. And even then its too much... Yeah Apple!

"Remember iPod gaming? Yes, it continues to be quite the punchline" Apart from the all powerful Peggle.

Ah pole position, the only game where cars are more volatile than the ones in Speed Racer!

iPod games aren't a bad idea, they just have to be implemented correctly. Pulse (I play it every day on the train home from work), Peggle, and Vortex are all great in that they use the clickwheel well. And yes, I also play big-boy games (just finished Portal after 3 hours).

iPod gaming, pfff. I don't even like the damn things for listening to music, I take Creative or any other player on the market over that overpriced so called design thing.

Ipod Peggle is a definite win, and Phase is ok. The rest is mostly a failure.

This is better than iPhone's "Web Apps", which is actually a euphemism for rotting garbage.

Speaking of iPods, when is Kotaku going to get on the Podcasting trip? I already listen to like 8 hrs of Gaming podcasts in a week and I would love to hear the guys (and gals if there be any) talk about is on their mind.

@apelaw9: The Dana Carvey Show was only on for 7 episodes, not 3 seasons.
"Hey-oh", indeed.
