Five Of The Better Gaming Inspired Music Videos (Plus One More)
By way of GameSetWatch comes GameLab's mini-collection of video game inspired music videos, a rather solid grouping of retro and modern day nods to the genre. One that's missing, included above is DJ Shadow's "This Time", which is not only a finger-snapper, but a fine pixelated ode that's also fan created. Some respectable choices, including Cadence Weapon's video that's heavy with Punch-Out!! references. Other suggestions are, of course, welcome in the comments.

@MrPerson:
Ah nice, you just saved me the bother of linking the loungemeister video :p
Roxeraz
@chinesedentist:
That's about infographics, not a game. (great video still)
DrWorm
I really liked the Pit Fighter segment in the Cadence Weapons video. A lot of people under the age of 25 have no idea that game existed.

They missed out E-Pro by Beck. The video's directed by Shynola - it's based on Vib-Ribbon.

this a mario kart inspired (rip off) video clip from a chilean rock band. enjoy
luchorock
All in all a pretty good list. Loved the AIH one. And even though I hate the song Californication, I did rather enjoy the video when it came out. Oh, and that Xiu Xiu song nearly made my ears bleed. But I guess at least they're doing something different...or something.

@DrWorm:
Heck yeah, Golden Shower's Video Computer System.
HighlanderWolf
I never really got into Architechure in Helsinki. Always thought they were kind of 'meh'. Vid's cool though.
thischarmingman
Californication?
Stupid people look a that video and say, "oh! That's what games look like now? That's pretty impressive!"
Even dumber people say, "this song is fantastic!"
madhotch
I see most of the videos have more to do with Pixel art rather than a real correlation to videogames
Tikey
How could they miss Atom Bomb by Fluke?
[www.youtube.com]
Half the video is *from* Wipeout!
badasscat
R.I.P. Heath Ledger. But anyway yes, good videos. Love Move your feet!
KEITH1437
alright, kinda lame i have to admit
finder39
My Vote is for Super Furry Animals - Lazer Beam. Watch it!
Rieth
This video is kind of boring. The song is kind of boring too.
AleeYun
@DrWorm: The Wintergreen video is pretty cool. I was bugged though that the story goes that they were crushed and covered with cement to prevent scavengers (Although you have to ask who would want to go through so much trouble to dig up ET carts?).
Erwin211
Move Your Feet
The song and the video are included in DDR Extreme, or Supernova, or something? It was awesome, in any case. I love that song and the video was awesome.
Tiger-Fever
'course how could I forget the classic "Video Computer System" by the Brazilian group...um...Golden Shower (don't worry, the video is safe for work).

What about Keith Schofield's video for DJ Format's "3 Feet Deep". Schofield also did Wintergreen's "When I Wake Up", which got some attention a while back as it was about the ET cartridge landfill. Both are available at his site (which itself is video game insipired): [www.keithschofield.com]

@BigDanG: I had to check the date of the article to check for sure that this was out of whack.
It's not like the Red Hot Chili Peppers are an obscure electronica band from Sweden. Xiu Xiu make the list but these guys don't know that Stadium Arcadium got seven Grammy nods?
MarquisMark
That Architecture in Helsinki video is just... cool. I would describe it as Metal Slug-gy (especially the triangle player).
@BigDanG: Exactly what I was thinking.
Erwin211
3 Feet Deep, by DJ Format, MC Abdominal and MC Decisive. I wish this game actually existed.

I'm confused by the write up for Californication in the article. Since when is Californication the title track of their latest album? Were Stadium Arcadim, Greatest Hits, and By The Way non-albums? And how could the video pay homage to SSX and The Movies when neither games existed back in 1999?
BigDanG

TBH.
PirateThom
Woo, go Architecture in Helsinki, I would've been surprised if the vid wasn't there!

@comradestalin: An amazing actor. RIP.
PriorMarcus
@comradestalin: RIP =[
The man was a damn good actor, hopefully The Dark Knight will do him justice
Impul5se
No Murs?? Are you kidding me?!
[youtube.com]
Murs did an entire Punch-Out!! video. Whoever made this list didn't try very hard.
Gustavo
Wasn't Tetrominon by YMCK posted on Kotaku a long time ago? I liked that one.
metadae
@Fadakar: I'll be humming them in my Evolution class now.
:'(
comradestalin
@comradestalin: RIP :(
T'was okay, I finished half of it. Animation was cool.
Fadakar
Catchy!!!
In other news...RIP Heath Ledger. :'-(
comradestalin
Someone else already mentioned it, but Missy Elliot's Sock It 2 Me is the best video game-inspired music video ever. It is a take off of MegaMan, complete with Dr Wily and a bunch of other MegaMan characters.

Damn, looks like I'm going to have to do another 5. Some awesome suggestions here. I also corrected my RHCP screw-up.
Thor Jensen
Gamelab
kthorjensen
They also forgot Ugress' awesome Loungemeister, in which a heavily pixellated band goes through those things bands go through when they come to town to play at a concert.
MrPerson
Hmm, I didn't like em or the music really, meh.
Irenicus-the one and only
@serotoninzero: Shadow is certainly zee bomb.
ampillion : Will comment for money.
I'm glad to see the three standouts (in my book) where at least mentioned in these comments, even if they didn't make into the actual article. That'd be Atom Bomb, 3' Deep, and Wintergreen. Add in Do the Whirlwind and Move Your Feet and that'd be the top 5 list I'd have made. I really don't think californication should have been on there, and I'm not completely convinced about Shark. All in all I'd rate the article a solid meh, except that it reminded me to rewatch several awesome videos I hadn't looked at in a while.

Glad to see Xiu Xiu get some attention!

@DrWorm: Had to make sure Video Computer System was mentioned. That video is pure, unadulterated, Pitfall-era win.
tk.
without Fluke's Atom Bomb, this list is pretty worthless. I remember when I was younger I would stay up late to watch Amp on MTV in hopes that they'd show Atom Bomb.
does anyone remember Sock It 2 Me by Missy Elliot? I hated the song, but the video was like Megaman. [www.youtube.com]
Five Element Ninja
The only one I can think of off the top of my head is that Bjork one.. I forget what song it was for though. In fact it may have been unofficial.. But it was brilliant!
XAnthonyX
@Gustavo: Agreed! Murray's Revenge is a much better pick than that awful Cadence Weapon video.
Huge props to Gamelab for showing Paul Robertson's animation for Architecture in Helsinki. That man is a pixel machine.
benmonkey
@Rieth: Great video. They also did a great gaming-inspired video for 'Play It Cool' a few years before...

DJ Shadow!
Rock.
I love Shadow, yeah?

Copernicus Studios up in Canada animated a Punch Out themed music video for Spesh K. It's quite well done. Check it out!
