Force Unleashed Tech Continues To Astound
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:40 AM on January 26, 2008
If I thought I could get away with simply posting this video and the word "drool" underneath it, then you wouldn't be reading this sentence right now. LucasArts showcases the triple-play of Havok physics, Pixelux's Digital Molecular Matter, and NaturalMotion's Euphoria, showing how the three technologies are combining to make Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for the PS3 and Xbox 360 the ultimate Jedi game. I'm planning on spending my entire time with the game just running around breaking things and going, "Ooooooo, lookatthat!" Sure it's a massive, irrational intrusion into Star Wars canon, but when you compare it to Soulcalibur IV suddenly it doesn't seem so bad.

I love how everyone decries the death of PC games because of pirates. Thats why Steam sells record numbers of games right? Thats why my local Best Buy is always selling out of and restocking their games section? Oh... and no pirates on consoles.... yeah those mod chips just give you extra FPS right? Get a clue... if the game is well made, people buy it, end of point. You guys must work for the industry, because it sounds alot like the whining the RIAA makes even though music sales are through the roof. Piracy has been and always will be. But more people buy the good games than pirate them. Your develpment effort is not wasted on the PC platform unless you make a game that is crap. Then people neither buy nor pirate.

Of course whats going to bother me about this game will be the unrealistic placement of destructible environments.
For every door I can smash in there will probably be 10 that I cant. For every tie fighter I can smash with a storm trooper there will pobably be a flimsier computer console that he will just bounce off of ...

Hmm, call me a sceptic, but it just looks like Jedi Knight, but done properly. You can pretty much muck about with the force in any of the Jedi Knight series, although yes, it didn't feel exactly right.

Damn this looks good. They seem to be coming along quite well with this title!
That Euphoria engine is funny though. I loved how the character force gripped a stormie and he grabbed a scout trooper, both of them dancing around in midair, LOL!

@catapult37:
That wasn't anything like Euphoria.
The combine soldiers just turned into dead, limp ragdolls.
These storm troopers are reacting to being picked up, they try to grab onto things to save themselves. And they try to jump out of the way of things in the first place.
You really weren't paying attention if you didn't notice a huge improvement over HL2.

Posted 4:50 AM 26/1/08
@catapult37: No you didn't. At the end of HL2 whenever you grabbed someone, they immediately ragdolled and were dead. If you launched anything at anyone, you'd either miss or they'd die, no enemy reaction. Even worse was the Heroes of M&M system where anytime an enemy was knocked over, they'd ragdoll, dead or not. The effect was confusing. You'd hit them and they'd become dead weight, but then they'd get back up like they weren't just flailing their arms about as they fell in an odd, lifeless position. Euphoria adds life, self preservation as it says in the video.

I'm not a big Star Wars fan, and I'm a little skeptical about how the gameplay will be, but this looks amazing. I've seen the R2-D2 wood-splitting and was impressed by that, and this is amazing. Every once and a while a great Star Wars game will come out, so I'm hoping this will be it. It has a ton of promise and potential. I'm actually surprised it will run on current gen consoles.

@baked ham: @EdwinJ85: the Euphoria, and MM, are working in-sync with Havok engine, which is pretty cool as it means, if Havok/MM start a deal going, any programmer of Havok has the capability to use this sort of tech!
and, seeing euphoria in GTA 4 is a good sign of things to come, imagine GTA with the MM intergrated, would mean crashing into walls/shutters/cars would create proper damage calculations

@Doomstink: I dunno, man. They didn't write any of the physics code, they just implemented the three different systems into a unified structure. The game's been in development for years. I'm sure that they had a small team working on implementing the physics, but the game looks like it could be quite huge, to me. I can't imagine it took all their manpower all this time just to get three already written physics systems to work in tandem with each other.

@TempvsMortis: I think we can all agree that the last thing Star Wars needs is more ideas from George Lucas. :-)
Video looks cool... I'm most impressed by the DMM metal /wood / material effects... they look really convincing. I'm concerned, like someone else said, that there's not much game here, just a physics playground.
Is Euphoria the same procedural animation package that we saw on Indy (or even that old football demo?). Cause if so, that things's a lot cooler than "guys can grab on to things". If done right, procedural animation can make things look a ton more natural and fluid, saying goodbye to canned, repeated animation.
Of course, I think I read somewhere that the real-life solution would one day be a combination of procedure and keyframe animation, so you can still do interesting things with manually-animated movements.
Finally: I love that lightsaber stance, with it behind his back. Badass.

All "impressive, most impressive" physics and A.I. aside, "I have a baaad feeling about this." Why is it that I sense that the Lego games will end up being less 'silly' when it's all said and done?
It's not the tech or the setting, it's something elsewhere, elusive....*
*--Or maybe it's just the lame-o premise of the game and the fact that they continue to emphasize the cool environment and enemy reactions over the actual game. They should've either made a game from the perspective of one of the surviving Jedi (but not Ben or Yoda--there ARE others out there that got the revised distress code, we have to assume), or where you play as Vader himself. Alas, 'the kids' don't want to be a good guy, and Vader doing wall-runs and backflips and Tazmanian Devil-type spin moves WOULD look stupid as Hell.

@Doomstink: It takes place between the first 3 and last 3 episodes of Star Wars. So while this guy is supposed to be some super powerful secret apprentice, he'll probably die or disappear at the end of the game/series to make way for Star Wars IV in which he is not.
So I agree, it'll probably be short. But it'll be a franchise. I'm looking forward to Force Unleashed TWO.
@bob-e: "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is an upcoming multimedia project [consisting] of a video game, a tie-in novel by Sean Williams, action figures, a comic book, a reference book and a role-playing game supplement. I used to read all the new star wars books back in middle school and high school. i'm 27.5 now. you do the math. i live in japan and paperback books cost like 1200yen here so i asked for books for christmas. my mom, not wanting me to grow up, apparently, sent me a star wars book ("Legacy of the Force: FURY") for christmas (along with "Wild Fire," Nelson DeMille; "The Alexandria Link," Steve Berry; "Allah's Scorpion," David Hagberg). I'm halfway through FURY and have read the others except for "Allah's Scorpion". Yeah... I noticed the middle-east theme as well. I guess that's the direction our new fiction writers are taking. No more Europe. No more Russia. Oh well. It was bound to happen.
Anyhow, the new Star Wars game looks great. I've owned all the Jedi Knight games and, while they were all decent, I never TRULY felt like I was able to do what I felt like I should have been able to do based on what I'd seen and read in the books and movies. This game looks close. I hope it doesn't disappoint cuz I'm definitely buying it. 'Course, til I can cut holes through anything, in a realisitic manner, with a lightsaber it would be truly up to par.

I definitely hear ya. The only thing that's keeping me positive on this is that the game was uncovered back around E3 of '06 I believe, possibly before that, possibly after that, but I'm pretty sure around the same time frame, so I'm just thinking that they must have been working on this game prior to E3 '06 which will have given them 2+ years by the time the game actually comes out. And that's about the average time frame for a big, epic game, so I'm just hoping! =D

I really like the DMM aspect, though i wonder if they'll place as much emphasis on sound quality as they have with the physics. DMM + excellent sound effects would feel super immersive.

@ph15h: This is where the nasty side of Nintendo's "graphics don't matter" strategy becomes evident. CPU power is used for far more than just graphics -- systems like the three highlighted in this video are very processor-intensive. Nintendo wouldn't ever say it, but they sacrificed more than just graphical fidelity when they chose not to upgrade the Wii significantly over the Gamecube.

game looks great, but they need to change the main character design. The costume is great, but the face and the haircut...looks like he belongs more in a game like Bully(because he looks like he belongs in a high school with that super-modern, miltiary style haircut, and he looks 15 or 16). If I'm going to be doing badass force powers, I want to play as a badass character.
They should make him more sith like, worthy of Darth Vader himself and less juvinile-delinquent.

@bob-e: Probably piracy since it's a game that really focuses on the single player experience. They may not want to use Steam perhaps. Also , the baseline system requirements due to heavy physics use may be a problem and porting the dumbed down PS2 branch may put people off when they see their PS360 counter parts. These are just possible reason but they never came out and said anything but I found it weird too.

Got to see some of this tech displayed at our 2006 GameStop manager conference, but not in-game like this. The molecular whatchacallit was supersweet at the time, but in game like this, just WOW! The only thing I don't get is if you are this apprentice to Vader hunting down stray Jedi from between episodes 3 and 4, why isn't the main character just Vader himself? Isn't that was he was supposed to have done between 3 and 4? Maybe he's hunting bigger jedi or something.

And the people feeling uncomfortable with the stormtroopers holding hands? Are you THAT homophobic to get all hot under the collar of some computer AI NPC characters holding on to each other for dear life? Christ...
With that said, I'm really looking forward to this. It looks like a lot of fun, and I love the fact that they're taking some broad ideas to making something unique. I however am hoping it'll be longer then a six hour game, but I'd be fine with 10 hours or so, I usually start getting irritated when the game is taking forever to complete. Three things. One- That lightsaber stance is awesome. I love how he swings the blade out from behind him to deflect oncoming lasers.
Two- All that physical grabbing the enemies do is over the top in this vid. Hopefully it'll be more rare than that in the final product. It's very cool looking but looks goofy when the enemies grab onto other enemies' hands and such. It'd be great in cases where a guy is shoved over a cliff and grabs onto the ledge, but seeing it in a lot of fights is going to look unrealistic.
Three- What happened to that awesome wood breaking in the first tech demo? I want to see more of that, it was insane when they started throwing R2's through the wooden wall and it was warping and splintering as it weakened.
I'm dying to see the rest of this game.

- 3:31 people bounce against walls like they were rubber?
- sends a ST against a Tie fighter and the TIE explodes???
WTF?
-apart from grabbing objets the ST look like rag dolls moving limbs like they were swimming scoolgirls instead of soldiers
- 2:37 break a windows, vacuum sucks everything from the room but he doesn't even flinch?
-3:32 once you use the force on a box it no longer is affected by gravity?

This game is sure hyping itself up pretty good, so let's hope it delivers. I think the DMM is the best part. The breaking glass looks good, the permanently deforming metal looks fantastic, but they still haven't gotten the splintering wood down yet. If you look closely at the video, the trees don't look quite right when they are being force-pushed. The way they splinter and sway is not how you would expect something as heavy, solid, and thick as a tree trunk to move - especially as it's being cut by a lightsaber... unless in this particular iteration of the star wars universe the physics make lightsabers more like lightbludgeons.
