Fuck the Knicks (And Their Mango Sentinel)
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 12:00 AM on January 8, 2008
I've hung out in my fair shade of arcades. I've also overheard, and even been involved in, my fair share of heated shit-talking, especially when it comes to fighting games. But this...this is new. This is Mahvel. Baybee.

I live in South Philly and I met a bunch of guys around my neighborhood GameStop that seriously trash talk just like that while playing Halo 3. I thought it was annoying at first but now it makes me laugh at some of the things they say and associations they make.

This is a newer variation of the Marvel shit-talk I used to hear back when I was running tournaments and MvC2 was released about a year prior. By that time NYC player and all around nice guy Justin Wong started making a name for himself at all of these tournaments. Another group of players in Philly kept a strong, friendly rivalry with Justin and his entourage of similarly skilled players.
Back then in 2001, Justin began exploiting Magneto in ways that other players haven't figured out yet. The constant triangle jumping confused many players back then, especially when he'd cross up with an assist. When these rivals (NY VS Philly) were matched up, some of the craziest shit you ever heard someone utter in a game would flap out of some spectators head.
It may not be this way anymore, but please be aware that this is all in good fun. Fighting gamers, especially those involved with the Street Fighter scene, are some of the most "gamey" people I know.

I think what's even more sad is that people are going to use that way too much in online games now so i have even more reasons to mute the volume.
I mean first it's woot in the dictionary now this i don't need to see fuck the knicks or curly pringles or any of that shit in it either.

I wish MvC2 would end up on Live Arcade. I think the game is just waaaaay to large, even given MS's *generous* 250 meg limit on titles now.
I played this so much using those horrible dreamcast pads that my thumb went numb from that wretched d-pad and my fingers locked into a vaguely claw-like shape.

It may sound too urban for most people, but this brings back fond memories of a small arcade I used to go to called Champions in Northeast Philly.
A bunch of us would skip school and go down to play either Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter. SF was the major favorite, and you'd think you were watching a soccer game the way some of the onlookers would scream.
Good times, it saddens me that arcades are all but dead.

MvsC2 is about as unbalanced a fighter as you can get. There's a reason you keep seeing those magneto/storm/sentinel teams (throw cable/blackheart in there too.) I never minded the shit talking at the arcade- even for this game which seemed to bring it out of people- I minded the really obese kids with thick jackets on playing and leaning into your spot, so you can barely hold on to the joystick/buttons (depending on the side).
Apparently EA has the license for Marvel stuff for another couple of years, also there's bad blood/hurt feelings between the Marvel & Capcom- too bad, because it would be pushing a button and making money.
This video is solid gold!

I think those on here who don't quite get the video are those who were not a part of the arcade Renaissance of the 90s, where people gathered to watch the fighting tournaments. Plus, I think they're used to trash talking over XBL, where it's more stupid, more offensive, and less creative, since they have the anonymity of the 'tubes' to protect their ass from being prison pounded for talking such crap.

Lol, I agree with Xmen vs. Street Fighter > MVC2.
Was much more balanced and not too over the top.
IMO MVC2 should have been a huge screen allowing 6 players at once (ala SSB) considering the wackiness level of it.
As for the trash talking, I hated trash talking in the arcade, not so much as the random schpiel but the fact that real losers liked yelling and spitting in your ear.
Of course a real life fist to the face solves that problem.

@wiitarded:
They ARE using strategy. MvC2 isn't about turtling or countering as much as it's about all out attack. You try to land a hit on your opponent so you can pop them up and then do your max combo. This isn't street fighter. It doesn't even have the full six buttons. And if you are anti-cheesing then you will get owned hard in this game by anyone halfway decent.

Back in the days of the `cades, you would get your ass knocked through the machine if you shit talked like that unless it was with friends.

Damned fine medicine I say, which is why a lot of us who grew up from those days know how to respect other gamers, unlike the filth that fills most of the online gaming communities now.

To that point, i think that's what BostonK was refering to when he said "Black speak" or whatever.

I miss the original Broadway Arcade (The one that was actually on Broadway between 50th and 51st) and the money matches that used to go on. Having that spare income brought alot of fun to the table. :)

When I went to NYC for the first time like a month ago, and being from Miami, FL I had never been inside a real deal arcade (we have none here) and when i stepped in side one and saw everybody playing ever game and 1 on 1 against each other on every great fighting game of the past decade and a 1/2 and DDR, I felt so happy to be there it was so real and all about the games it kicked so much ass. This shit talk might be low class, but at least there is totally passion for the game there.
You NYC people have an amazing city and an amazing arcade city to boot, never let it die, because you will miss it I promise. I missed it and I had never even known what it was till I went there.

I won't lie, the New Yorker in me doesn't see anything wrong with this video. Sure it's funny, but that's what smack talk is. As long the comments don't degenerate into senseless socioecomical generalizations, it's all good.

@Knoxximus: Hey we were like that in NYC also. Sad to see a lot of "jab n grabs" on XBL when I used to play SF2T. Back on snes xband they barely even did that. Damn i miss the old arcades...putting your quarter on the top banner to show you had "next"

You'd be asked to get out of a Japanese arcade if you were that loud, over there you just let your skill do the talking for you.

Ain't nothing wrong with 'Jab n Grabs' (tick throws), bout the only way certain characters have a chance at winning. You old schoolers need to wake up and start playing to win :D

Hahaahah, my friend's uncle owns University Pinball/Laundromat. We used to go in there(3 or 4 of us) and just just play free games. My boy had the keys the change machine!!! We just had to make sure what we took out went back into the arcades. Damn, those were the fucking days. These fools that had no idea what the people in the video were saying are probably like 14 year old white bread surbabanites.

@MURDERFACE: Of course it isn't skill to launch an assist to death, but it does take skill to get to that point. The reason he's doing doing the same move over and over is because he is killing the assist character. Using the launcher to kill the assist character is the easiest and safest way to do this. You do have other combo options, but why risk getting flashy and messing up a perfect opportunity to kill the character? This mistake can easily cost you a victory.
If you don't assist with care and/or block well. Your point character and your assist are gonna get snapped out and you can almost always kiss your assist goodbye.

This was at a tournament I was at in Columbus, Ohio where players from Cali, Philly, and NYC attended. The match is between one guy from Cali and one from Philly. The dude doing all the shit talking is Yipes, from NYC. He won Evolution 2007 and is one of the top 3 MvC2 players in the world.
As far as a translation goes:
Mango Sentinel - Obvious
Pringles/Curley Mustache - "Once you pop, you can't stop" Magneto will combo you, then reset the combo, then do it again. Over and over.
Scoops - Magneto's grab looks like it "scoops" you up out of the air.
Make it Rain - Storm's Hailstorm super combo.
Fuck the Knicks - Mango Sentinel lost.

This footage is from a tournament in Ohio back in November I think. The guy commentating (Yipes) won the Marvel singles along with Evolution World in Las Vegas.
Some of the subs for the commentary is wrong though.
Old School!=Oh, Scoop!
Yo I think of New York Knicks = Yo that ni**a New York Knicks.
All of the commentary from that money match was godlike.

Marvel is amazingly balanced at high-level, which is all that matters for a competitive fighting game. No fighter besides maybe VF will see you playing average characters at high-level.
XvsSF is garbage, sorry -- easy infinites for EVERY char = don't get touched. Real fun.
The trash and intensivity as the hardest fighter to play make Marvel endure at the tourney level. Check out vids on YouTube (search Justin Yipes or Justin Sandford) or www.shoryuken.com/forums.
The yearly tourney circuit starts in Atlanta in March. Fighters are still alive and still hype like it's 1992 to the people who play.

And arcades are dead btw -- even Evolution, the world tourney, is console. There are still majors on the annual circuit across the country that include all major fighters every year though -- Atlanta, Philly, Ohio now, Vegas, Cali, NY, keeping the comp alive.

For the uninitiated, Marvel is pretty much the most intense fighting game ever made at high-level. If you call it unbalanced because Roll can't fight Sentinel, boo hoo. Most of the games people think of "balanced" like 3s or DR really aren't at all anyway. Marvel is AMAZINGLY balanced at the top level, which all that matters anyway, and it's why it's played so crazy and still the #1 fighter played competitively (although Smash and 3s have bigger numbers).
XvSF is trash btw. Easy infinites for every single character = don't get touched. Real fun.
Anyway Marvel is so hype directly because of the intensity of the game + the trash/rivalries. If you went to a fighting-game major nothing even touches it in terms of excitement. Watch matches on YouTube (search Justin-Yipes or Justin-Sanford) and witnessss.

Further note, I was at this tournament. Though most players would rather play at an arcade, most tourneys these days are on console. This tourney was no different, this came from Seasons Beatings at in Ohio this past Fall (search Shoryuken.com for results).
The player that was so vocal is Yipes, who is arguably the current MvC2 top dog.
And Silkylove basically had it right:
Pringles: once you pop, you pop you cant stop. More specifically, once you've opened up a can (of whup ass, or whatevre you prefer), cant close it. Another popular variation of this was just chips at some point.
Curly Mustache: obv guy on pringles can
Scoops: this just kind of comes from basketball-ish slang. Scoop em up, drawing out an opening from a well-played offensive manuever.
etc...
My fave tho is the Skull and Crossbones.
ITS MARVEL BABY. BEST GAME EVER.

Alright to start off, I have been to Evolution last year in the east coast side. And they had Mahvel vs. Capcom 2 where a crap load of people hovered the only two people playing it, with the winning combo of sentinal, storm and another character. These people went shit crazy over who the hell was going to win and it looked like it was about to be some gang related thing, but damn. I didn't even know that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was that damn popular.

@RPGr: XvsSF was incredibly broken. Every character had an infinite. MvC2 is a much better game balance wise.

@wiitarded: Obviously, you haven't seen high level marvel play. What you saw was Magneto's rom infinite. Throw in a few resets and there you go. It's a lot harder and more complicated than you think.
Scoops/Pringles refers to the uppercut assist that Cyclops does or a move that lifts up the opponent (such as Mags launcher). That move "scoops" up the opponent (ice cream!) or "pops" the opponent (pringles!).
