Game Critics Exchange Folded Notes, Pick Games Of 2007

The Games Critics Awards 2007 Game of the Year rundown is underway. Following a poll of 36 judges (including Crecente, should you take objection to the outcome and need to focus blame), where each had to pick their ten favourite games for the year, the Critics' site is running a countdown of the 10 that scored the most votes. Already revealed is Uncharted, which came in at #10, and Assassin's Creed at #9, with more to be revealed through the week.

Pfff.... Orange Box HAS to be number one. Now that the US is officialy in a rececion, the economic value will determine everything.

@SuperCracker: I didn't like the game that much either, after a day or 2 playing it became GTA to me. But I do look forward for the sequel, I bet it will be a lot better in terms of content.

I have to disagree on Assassin's Creed. Great engine. Great graphics. Now to use that engine on a more thought out game.
Assassin's Creed 2 will probably be good.

Cod4 should be 5-6 on that list. It was an awesome game, but it didn't really invent anything new aside from the RPG-ish multiplayer perk experience.

Is it possible for them to pick Portal for #1 instead of the whole Orange Box? If so, I think that will definitely be it. Mario Galaxy will prob. be at #2 in that case, and I would have no qualms with that at all.

I like that this list is very specific and detailed about how the selection process is done. Each judge picks their "10 favorite games of 2007" and then assigns them points from 5 to 30, with the total of all points equal to 100. So instead of "This game got the most #1 votes, therefore it's #1" it gives a way to acknowledge that there's a tight race for #1 by only having a few points difference between their candidates.
FWIW, here's how I'd pick it.
14 - Mario Galaxy
14 - Bioshock
13 - Mass Effect
12 - COD4
11 - Orange Box
10 - Rock Band
08 - God of War 2
08 - Halo 3
05 - Warhawk
05 - Assassin's Creed

From looking at the judging panel, it's probably going to be something like:
1. Super Mario Galaxy
2. The Orange Box/Portal
3. BioShock
4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
5. Rock Band

How did Assassin's Creed do better than Uncharted, when the critics' average for Assassin's Creed was well lower than that of Uncharted? I'm a bit confused.
