GarageGames Reveals Fallen Empire: Legions
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:20 AM on January 18, 2008
It's always nice to put a name with a face. Late last year we posted about a leaked video of a Tribes-like web game from developer GarageGames. Now that web-based FPS has a name, and the name is Fallen Empires: Legions. Other than promising FPS gameplay "at its fastest and finest", the release doesn't really reveal any details, other than the fact that it will be a featured title at InstantAction.com, GG's new web-based games service due to launch later this year. "This is a first person shooter built by hardcore gamers who are wildly passionate about the genre," said Tim Aste, project director for Fallen Empire: Legions. "Legions won't be just any ordinary jewel matching web game; in terms of graphics and gameplay it will set a new benchmark of what the future of gaming will be on the web." From the video and screenshots I've seen so far, I'd say he's right. Productivity is completely screwed.
GARAGEGAMES ANNOUNCES Fallen Empire: Legions FOR INSTANTACTION.COM3D MULTIPLAYER FIRST PERSON SHOOTER COMING TO THE WEB IN EARLY 2008
EUGENE, OREGON - January 17, 2008 - After months of rumors and a recent video leak on the web, GarageGames today announced initial details for Fallen Empire: Legions, a first person shooter for the recently announced 3D online game platform, InstantAction.com.
"This is a first person shooter built by hardcore gamers who are wildly passionate about the genre," said Tim Aste, project director for Fallen Empire: Legions. "The game design allows for us to create a unique experience that brings FPS gaming back to its roots. Legions won't be just any ordinary jewel matching web game; in terms of graphics and gameplay it will set a new benchmark of what the future of gaming will be on the web."
"We created InstantAction to give ourselves and the rest of the development community an outlet to make the games they want to play. Rather than churning out sequels or licensed games, we're working with developers focused on creating cool gameplay," said Josh Williams, CEO of GarageGames. "Fallen Empire: Legions will be InstantAction's most advanced example of this so far. Marrying core games with the accessibility and social power of the web is a huge step forward in the industry, and I personally can't wait for this game to be released so I can hop on and start playing everyone."
Developed internally by GarageGames, Fallen Empire: Legions combines distinctive freedom of movement with fast paced first-person combat to create strategic, team-oriented gameplay. The InstantAction platform has allowed Fallen Empire: Legions to leverage the best of what the web has to offer, creating an evolving experience for players that can constantly be improved upon. This is first-person warfare at its fastest and finest!

Oh God, the last thing I need is another online game to get addicted to, and this looks increasingly promising. Ugh.
Half dreading, but half looking forward to it.

I so loved Tribes, first online FPS I really got into (yeah, there was Quake TF also, but Tribes owned it bad). I still think the netcode used in this OLD arse game is better than everything after it. Had excellent connection/latency on a 56K connection with 32 players. On that connection, could even hit enemies with a laser in the air across the map, count in those air discus kills also. Whomever did the netcode on this game is GOD!

Some of you guys got it all wrong.
This is WEB-BASED. Hence the heat around this game.
Hence why it will take over DD and all your flash games are belong to us?.

Well the game's name is a bit on the cheese-ball, generic side, but I like the idea of a massive FPS. What ever happened to Huxley?

Hopefully the current name is just a placeholder until they come up with a better one.

Well high hopes for this one, I miss good ol' Tribes and there hasn't been a real successor to that particular mantle, maybe this could be the game?

Oh christ, please let this be a spiritual sequel to the Tribes franchise. I desperately need that.

Ok - back from interview. Was pretty much the best thing ever. I can tell you as a true gamer-man that is going to be a good thing. The team is competent, capable and talented.
First person experience >>> it's a good thing.

im wary of this weird web based engine idea. hardly smells of hardcore. and unfortunately my pc wont be able to run whatever it works on. but im going to make every effort to procure new hardware in time to sample this. tribes is the king of games.

Interesting, going to sign up for a account now to get my name reserved :D Hate it when the name I like to use is taken! I really loved Tribes 2, first game I played once I installed my first video card.
The InstantAction website is interesting though, "What makes InstantAction unique is that it is not tied down to a specific gaming console, distributor or retailer; creating an accessible place for gamers to play great games."

@DugDawg & ebm62980: Granted the name is cheesy, I think it's the perfect fit for it. Tribes used to be a huge franchise, but now no one pays much attention to it anymore. T1 is shut down, T2 is still kinda going, and T:V just failed outright. Legions was the game that was supposed to bring the series back into the spotlight but yet again failed because it had no support.
So the Tribes series is essentially a "Fallen Empire" and this Legions is yet again attempting to bring it back into the spotlight.

Being web-based, I wonder how they're going to be able to create such good-looking graphics and fluid gameplay, without it looking too grainy, or feeling too flimsy. =\
I would LOVE to see this game happen, as I've had this MMO-FPS void since the disbanding of Dynamix, and death of Tribes 2. I'm just afraid it might turn out crap-tastic, being web-browser based.
They're probably going this route because:
a/ No one has done anything like this as far as I know.
b/ No cash flow to print the game on cd/dvd, so no production needed in that area.
To be honest, I'd feel more comfortable if it was released on disc, exclusive for PC, than just surfing to a webpage to play a game as intense as Tribes2 was.

@tornaydo: It was a nice article man :)
But I would like to reccomend you to, well, not mention the fact they might want to bring you on, which sometimes is a tactic companies might use for a favorable interview, but you allready know that I bet and they are probably sincere. Just try to avoid mentioning it to your readers :P

Yah, maybe these guys should also invent a paid service to block company IP blocks. They can charge the companies so they dont actually lose much money. Haha!
Preserve productivity and keep the game companies afloat at the same time!
