Wow if Sony wants people to make a commitment to the Ps3 they themselves need to make a commitment to the Ps3. I know it's hard when you have the cash cow that is the Ps2. But if and when (if ever) the Ps2 dies and Sony has to lean on Ps3 they are going to be very far behind the 360 and Wii.

Hell the 360 and Wii may be introducing new, new systems by the time that happens.

On the other hand I'm sure Ps2 sales are helping to stop some of the bleeding from low Ps3 sales.

I'm anxious to see what happens when MGS comes out. If that game doesn't post numbers (which I expect it too) I don't know what the future may hold.

We'll have to wait and see.

But this gen 360 and Wii and damn DS. It's like a 3 headed monster!

Wow. Infinity Ward wasn't kidding when they said they figured they could eventually take Halo 3 out in sales being on both platforms... If they don't, they're sure going to come close. Good for them. For as much as we heard about Halo before it came out, COD4 has done just fine. (and I'm sure at a fraction of the advertising budget)

It would be a truly sad year in gaming if the best selling game of the year had been Wii Play. I don't say this as a Wii hater, either... I have a Wii, and a quite a few games for it (Zack and Wiki, yay!)... but Wii Play is just total garbage. I got it (for the controller) and I think we played it around our house for all of a day before we were already sick of it.

I'm glad Super Mario Galaxy sold well, it's a amazing game. I can't really say the same for Wii Play. Although I've had some fun with it (Tanks!!) and my sister really enjoys the cow-game. :D

On the bright side, the lower ranked games sold surprisingly well especially Mario Galaxy. It's a shame it hasn't sold 1 million copies in Japan yet.

I'll be honest, I hated Wii Play to begin with. Controller aside, it was a gimmick to me.

Now, though:

1) I have never seen my mum enjoy something as much as the cow game (even though I beat her every time..) On its own I don't even like the game, but it's fun just to see her PLAY!
2) I have seen my dad play computer games for the first time I can remember. Not only that, but me, my brother, and he stayed up until 3am one night over Christmas. To play tanks. Again and again and again.
3) I rule at Find Mii. (Nobody will play me at it.)

What about World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade? That list apparently only covers consoles and had PC games been included The Burning Crusade would have definitely been on that list (it sold 2.4 million on its first day). I wouldn't call Halo 3 the best selling game of 2007 until we get an official number for WoW.

I'm happy to at least see PS2 titles on there but it says a lot to 3rd party publishers when the PS3 isn't even on the list. They understand that they may want to focus their efforts in the states. Not a single 3rd party game on the Wii made it into this list and with exceptions like GH3, I doubt that if this list was extended to the top 30, that a 3rd party game on the Wii would be present. This sends a much stronger message: It's either try harder or shift focus again. The 360 has definitely shown its dominance and superiority as software platform in 2007. They need to do better to hold 2008.

Regarding hardware I do believe you'll find many developers will still support the idea that neither platform is necessarily stronger than the other. For instance it's well known that the 360 has a better graphics card. I don't think you guys are responding to me being very well informed. Instead it seems like you've bought into some of the hype of Sony PR regarding their machine. Anybody that says it's a 100% fact that PS3 has more powerful hardware than 360 I would say has payed much attention to that debate.

i don't think wii play should be considered eligible for the software sales rankings. i see it as a hardware sale. if wii play were a standalone disc, i could see ranking it with software sales, but i can't help but feel that everyone is buying it for the wiimote, and considering the game 10 bucks worth of "toppings".

Also to be noted that Wii Play came out on Feburary 12th versus Halo 3 which came out September 25th. Although you can't really play the numbers game that way. For example: That is a difference of 225 days. Per day, Wii Play sold 12,785 copies. Per day, Halo 3 sold 49,680 copies. If Halo 3 came out on the same day as Wii Play, it would have sold 16 million copies.

Now, there are only about 18 million Xbox 360s in the market channel, so I dont think it is a fair extrapolation - but interesting none the less. Maybe MS should copy Nintendo more and create a controller shortage and then release a game with a controller in it. Only Nintendo loyalists or people who didn't know any better bought Wii Play for the games.

The reason for that is what happened last gen.

To be fair about Wii Play it was sold more for its extra remote. I mean I work at Gamestop and there were a lot of times people wanted a second remote and another game so we would tell them about Wii Play. I literally mentioned it to every single person I sold a Wii too or anyone who wanted a remote. I mean why would you not tell them. I think for the holidays we were actually counting it as an accessory.

Fun first 2 weeks with broken cod2 then I came back half a year later and played it patched and some dead risin. I just think the PS3 is a much better machine and will be a lot better for the future. In the games departement as well.

The first xbox on the other hand was so great, Halo, morrowind, shenmue 2, jet set radio, Unreal championship, sof2, rtcw, kotor etc. and I enjoyed it until the end :)

I bet no matter what, both Nintendo, MS and Sony will make another console after this. I think next gen after this is when it comes down to who stays, who dies.

@giovonti: And I think the DS beating the PSP has proven that 'more powerful technically' is meaningless to most gamers. Very few gamers are actually going to care about a bunch of theoretical numbers or engineering diagrams. They're going to say 'this game looks better than that' or 'this game looks more fun and enjoyable' and both those statements are so laden with subjectivity it's practically impossible to get people to unanimously agree that game X looks better than game Y.

Personally, I think gamers are drawn more to excellent art direction rather than excellent technical graphics capability. And this is where the ease of development plays a huge hand as a game that's easier to develop for will allow a larger budget for everything else that matters, art included.

Diamond sold 2.5 million. Pearl isn't even on the list, which ends with 1.8 million. The most it could have gotten total would be 4.3 million.
