Hands-On With The Retro Duo, The NES/SNES Hybrid
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:20 AM on January 11, 2008
Importer Innex featured the Retro Duo, an NES, SNES and Super Famicom player, heavily in its CES booth this year, giving old school console fans a chance to bust out their old carts and save a bit of space. The Retro Duo, which was paired with the NES and Sega Genesis-playing Gen-X, features S-video out, for those looking for a bit more clarity out of their 8-bit and 16-bit collection. The Retro Duo's controller looks and feels like the stock Super Nintendo controller, with another controller, part SNES, part NES Max, that should appeal to fans of that form factor.
One advantage the Retro Duo has over some of the other NES/SNES clones is its ability to properly play the original Starfox, which looked and played just as we remembered it. The double duty console looks like a pretty nice product for anyone who still has plenty of retro titles on hand and isn't already in possession of similar products like the FC Twin. More pics of the consoles are in our gallery below.

Ya gotta love the games they're choosing to demo these consoles with too...Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Starfox, Dragon Warrior 4, and what appears to be a Kunio-kun title.
At least they know who their market is.

For the record, the NEX is a pretty good system. I bought one and haven't been let down by it.
Looks like I may have to pick up one of these Retro Duos though. Very cool stuff.

@Mr.Waffleton:
Not only that, but they're bad clones. Bad mapper support, even with that last semi-official clone with the wireless controllers.

And jsut for reference while it says it plays Star Fox that doesn't mean other FX games will work

I remember seeing something like this at the LA County(Orange County? I don't know. Somewhere around there) fair.
It was called the Messiah Entertainment Generation Nex system, and it could play NES and SNES games.
These seem to me to be pretty commonplace.

Why are these things at CES they've been around for years. Lik Sang even sold them as i recall if that tells you how long they've been out.

Sounds quite cool, but I'd prefer RGB output to s-video. Plus, I've still got my Super Famicom hooked up and you can't beat original hardware. ;)

I'm actually considering getting a Sega double console. I've always loved Sega, and getting a dual emulator seems dumb when I could just get a SNES and play both on the original consoles.

@suya123: where's the fun in that? ive still got several dozen SNES classics and a score of NES ones, paying an overpriced amount to re-buy them to be a) married to the console and b) not sure if theyre transfer to the next console, etc strikes me as silly.
a device like this sounds awesome to me, though that guy with an emulator box and 360 controller has the advantage of saving anywhere, anytime, in any game, and to me, the only retro gaming feature that'd beat that is if virtual console had been done right - achievements, leaderboards, online co-op (like Streets of Rage 2 got).

@HAGE: Perhaps further clarification is needed. I know that you can use a Genesis to play Master System games with the Power Base Converter. I was referring to the fact that Innex does not make a Genesis/Master System combo clone. Such a combo would be a direct analog to the SNES/NES they offer. But for some reason, they have a Genesis/NES system. The only reason I can guess is that they are looking at the popularity of the systems. Of the four, the SMS is probably the least popular (at least in the States), so a SMS clone would be less of a draw than a NES clone. Personally, I would want a Genesis/SMS combo clone.

We have a system like this at my work, but its made by a different company. Its called the FC (famicom) twin, and it plays SNES and NES games. Weve had these for a long time. But the fact that these can play Super Famicom games is awesome. And we actually might start carrying the Gen-X consoles.

It's entirely possible the Gen-X will do Master System, too, if they hooked up the cart connections right. Remember, the original Genesis had all the necessary bits in it to play SMS games out of the box ... you just needed the PBC which was little more than an adapter to convert the pinout of the SMS carts.
I wonder if the Gen-X does S-Video also. I'd really like to see some actual in-depth testing of both of these units. They look pretty promising.

I'm in the company of just going with the Wii for retro gaming, but it's nice to see there are options out there for people with a lot of old hardware carts that need something newer than old thrift store consoles.
I still have an original N64 that runs fine, but this doesn't cover that. Need more games for it though.

@DigitalHero:
Because the "clone" market tends to struggle with special chip stuff? For example, NES-on-a-chips choke on some Castlevania 3. I know EMULATORS can do it, but they tend to have far greater resources at their disposal and are generally a whole 'nother bag.

This is good for the super retro fans out there, but I'm fine with the Wii. It doesn't have as large of a selection, but I don't have any money left over from Christmas, or time left in between playing my new 360 games and getting ready for school. Although, sometimes I think I might have more fun if I abbandoned this generation for the old school. After 60 hours of boring ass powerleveling in Oblivion, I'm craving some Mega Man and Mario.

Maybe, but if you are like me you still have and still continue to collect retro games yet it's the console that keeps crapping out on you. I think this is more tuned to the people already in the market of retro games as opposed to getting more people into the retro market.

uhh.. no. There are some games that are cheaper if you go buy them on ebay. It maybe like 1-3 dollars saved but its something. Plus some people prefer the physical copy of the game. I would shoot. Then when its so rare that is cost a million dollars sell it.

@Green-clad Gamer Dude: Probably won't be a legal one with N64 for a while; the patents are still active on it. The system came out in 1996...and the shortest patents (design patents) have a 14 year life...the earliest we'll probably see legit 3rd party machines with n64 support would be another 2-3 years off (can't find the patents on the game system, though they probably would have been filed a while before the system came out)

Meh, I mean this is cool and all because once all of the old consoles break, nothing new will be being made. But with that said, it's still possible to get an SNES, Genesis, or Nintendo on eBay for like $15-20.
"Saving a bit of space" would be the only reason to shell out money for this at this point.

Shame it doesn't have the coloured buttons from Japan/EU region. Maybe you guys in the States don't miss them, but I always thought they were nice for helping to keep the buttons' functions distinct. Plus, crack translation teams like the ones working on Breath of Fire II had a tendency to forget that not everyone had Japan's button colours. I guess there's always a paint brush...

Perhaps I'm the odd ball but my NES and SNES work perfectly fine. Hell I have a Pong knock-off made by Coleco that works just fine too.
That said, I still support this kind of endeavor. I appreciate anything that saves me shelf space. It's a pain in my ass to have to dig through my closet and rotate which console systems I want to play for the month. I'm just waiting for a NES/SNES/N64 combo since I'll be able to break out the Saturn or the Jaguar more often then. :p

I own an fc twin, but i'm definitely going to get this one! I think s-video makes a big difference on 16-bit games. That is what other clones out there are missing! And the fact that it takes super famicom games and original controllers, this is going to be awesome! I stopped by their booth and I was told it would retail between $69.99 to $79.99. For the extra features, it's definitely worth it. This probably the only clone that takes original controllers, plays super famicom games, supports s-video, and even plays mario rpg and starfox! too cool...

I know NES games on original hardware (even the AV Famicom - JP toploader) in S-video is impossible, because the hardware just doesn't support it. On NES units you can swap in the Play Choice 10 board and output component though.
I wonder how these things are made? I always wonder how much of the original hardware these console clones contain.
