How To Actually Enjoy The Simpsons Game
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:00 PM on January 4, 2008
The Simpsons game was a great concept. Had some good moments. Pity those were all cutscenes, then, and not the parts you actually got to play. Which leaves Simpsons fans in a pickle - how to enjoy the animated sequences and gags without having to submit yourself to cash expenditure and hours of gameplay? YouTuber TheCockCrew's got your back, and has gone and filmed the entirety of the game. Cutscenes and all. Links' below, if you're at all interested in saving yourself a few hours time.

I liked the game, and loved the Will Wright appearance. Granted, the camera was a pain to work around, but that didn't stop me from playing.
Of course the cut scenes were great, but you do get some humor while playing the game as well.

I don't know, I liked the game. It would have been nice if they had fixed the camera issues, but it wasn't enough of an issue to make me hate the game. Then again, I liked the movie, so I guess I must just have horrible taste.

This must have already been said at some point, but shouldn't they have reworked and called the "Grand Theft Scratchy" level: "Grand Theft Otto" instead?
Talk about a missed opportunity.

I have to say, the Wii version of the game was significantly worse than the 360 version. The Wii's controls just exacerbate the existing issues with the camera. In addition, in the Wii version, there are some clear instances of lazy porting (telling you to switch characters while already in co-op mode, etc). Basically, I guess I'm just saying don't judge this game solely on the Wii version. ;-)

I really enjoyed this game. Don't think that because of the cut scenes, that is where all the humor is because through out the game there is just some priceless humor thrown in. My favorite levels was when you first enter the video game engine and the Grand Theft Scratchy level. I seen countless humor lying around levels like a certain bill board you need to change in Grand Theft Scratchy. Or the many posters lying around the game engine level.

Yeah i played it @ a friends house and beat the game so that saved me 50 bucks but the only part of the game i did not care for was Will Wright it kinda killed the whole springfield thing cause i know that they have special guest in the TV shows but this was overdone but i guess cause it's EA's blood money they can shill anyone from the EA staff. oh well at least family guy had adam west and all of his crazy one liners.

You guys see the cut scene with Matt Groening? That was completely awesome!
Secretary: "Right away, Mr. Groaning."
Matt: "That's GRAIN-ING."
Secretary: "Are you sure...?"
Matt (sad and confused): "No."
Homer: "Who the heck are you?"
Matt: "I'm the greatest visionary in animation history!"
Homer: "Seth MacFarlane?"
(Matt lets out a groan of intense frustration)

@Irismr: I thought that Hit and Run was good too. I played that game through like 4 times. Might take it for a spin once more, that game was GTA with Simpsons characters in it. I loved Snakes taunt when you run someone over "Like out of my way walking dude".

I bought the game just after christmas, but I wish I hadn't. The controls and camera are horrible, there is nowhere near enough signposting, and the gameplay is contrived and derivative (copying something doesn't instantly qualify you as satire).
I'll be trading it in shortly.

Didn't take long for this video to get taken down.
Yeah, that lard lad bullshit in the PS3 demo was enough to completely turn me off of the game. How the hell am I supposed to get a feel for the controls and gameplay in a boss fight?
Crap. Pissed me off, and I deleted it after hurling enough swears at the telly to make my mother cry from the other side of the planet.

Man, I hated that Lard Lad level in the DS version. Too much jumping over gaps and making sure Blob Homer roll over that @#$@$# ramp.
DS cutscenes, although animated, are a little different from the console versions. Frink instead of Wright. :(

I played the demo, and would have enjoyed it much more only if the controls were better. Plus some gameplay mechanics were a bit fubar.
But still personally I felt that it was one of the better Simpsons licensed games.
Anyone remembers that terrible one that was on the SNES? Oh shit that thing was dead and busted.

the game was horrendous. i bought the wii version (which many will say is the reason why it sucked but if you read user reviews on the gaming sites, the wii's lack of analog cam only made the suck cam suck harder); that it can be beaten is the only saving grace of an otherwise broken game. the interesting thing i've found is that very few of the gaming sites, if any, reviewed the game at the time of the release. they were all there following its legal tribulations (ie rockstar lawsuit rumor) and "on the nose" cameos (ie will wright) and delighted in announcing the free homerballs to pre-sale orders (which ended up being given away with the game as an in-store promotion anyway) but when it hit the shelves, there was nary a word of the horrors contain within. i saw that as a deliberate avoidance of upsetting the $ponsor$' (ea), months before that whole kane and lynch/eidos/gamespot/gerstmann thing.
this is strictly for the rental shelves, unless you just had to get that dumb homerball, which i will happily part with for $50.
it must be said that simpsons games have a long standing history of sucking since the nes; the original arcade game is definitely a blight upon that record, what with its replayable, enjoyable nature. one of the rumors going around at release time was that it might be an unlockable in the new simpsons game, and honestly, that's part of the reason i bought it, though i inevitably couldn't force myself to muster up the desire to play through the levels again, which is for the best since it apparently isn't an unlockable.

I really liked the game. I thought it was fun. I know that second statement doesn't support my opinion greatly. What are you looking for in a platformer? Jumping, solving puzzles, collecting things all set in a very compelling world that anyone who's been playing games for a few years can appreciate? Sure,it's not the most innovative game, but it does have a lot of elements that make it fun.
If we held any of the old Simpson's games up to the level of scrutiny that the newest installment game has received on the internet, we'd probably find that the biggest difference between them was that this newest game had the most involvement from the writers and voice actors. A step in the right direction for interactive media if you ask me.

Whoa! If these cut scene gags were meant to be the good bits of the game, then the game truly sucked. I hated the Big Boy fight demo level, but everyone was saying that at least the gags were funny, having watched that video I haven't laughed even once.

@dead_red_eyes: that's quite a fucking feat, man. im assuming you also used one of the predators, as the humans struck me as kinda useless, cyber-arm or not.

Cripes, how in the hell did I forget about X-Men and Alien Vs Predator?! Those were classics as well! Aliens was really fun too. I remember beating that game with only 1 quarter when I was little (11) ... and being proud as all hell for it.
It would be a dream come true for all of those arcade classics to come to XBLA.

I really didn't mind this game. Just beat it earlier today actually. Granted the cut scenes were what really sold me on the enjoyment of this title.
Really was a nice throw back to the humor of the Simpsons seasons from years ago (when it was good).
Also of note are the various changes between the 360 version that I played and the PS2 version in the videos here. Some of the things they changed are just odd.

It's great to see that there are some semi "oldies" around here that appreciate the classics, and remember the glory days of the arcade. Truly, The Simpsons Arcade game and Turtles in Time were ahead of their time. There's a Simpsons Arcade game here in Portland, OR @ Ground Kontrol ... and everytime I go there, it's the first game I play. Ahhh the good ol' days.
I didn't think that The Simpsons Game was all that bad. Sure, there was some issues here and there ... but it wasn't an overall wreck. I still try to play the Futurama game for the PS2 ... but I'll be damned if the frame rate issues don't kill me everytime. Haha. Still tho, the writing and humor are enough to keep me entertained.

I played this over the holidays while at a relatives house and except for the horrible camera problems, I had a lot of fun. It's the platforming and puzzle solving that did it. It probably loses a lot when you're in single player, having to switch back and forth between characters constantly.
So far, I've only watched the video linked on the page here, but he skipped a great moment where the Aliens discuss the purpose of their ships weak spot and Bart decides to look up a walkthrough online.
The game is full of game references (as you can see from the videos) and does a nice job of tying them into show references. The Japanese level has Katamari, Pokemon and Mr. Sparkle goin at the same time. Good stuff.

Exactly I laughed at a lot of jokes in the gameplay demo. Sure it was an uneven 3D platform experience but I kind of got into it after a few go arounds. One of those games I'd probably not end up ever finishing though. I'd get $40 worth out of it in the end I'm sure.
