It's Like Gears of War, But With Kissing
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:31 PM on January 30, 2008
By now things like taking cover and co-op play are becoming standard fare. So how do developers mix it up? Big sloppy kisses! Multi-plat Faith and a .45 from Danish dev Deadline Games is Bonnie and Clyde and Gears of War. Set in the Great Depression, the game follows Luke and Ruby on the lam. Here's how Deadline is turning conventions on their ear: After Luke and Ruby make it through a shoot out, she gives him a kiss. If Luke dies, Ruby gives him a "kiss of life" to bring him back. The character do more than just smooch. In single player, the game's AI lets players do more than just lay down fire. It's possible to pull off complex moves like tossing a can of petrol to your computer partner, who blows it to bits over a crowd of enemies. Game director Søren Lundgaard points out how the game differs from Gears of War:
We have a design rule to make sure that Ruby is really interesting and easy to play with. What we call it is 'To play around with an unscripted A.I. you care for' — that's the line that we use internally. That means Ruby should be able to take the initiative on her own, not just react or be scripted to exactly what she has to do... That came mostly from playing some of the other co-op games — say a game like Gears of War, where you have a character with you most of the time, but you don't really depend on him and it's kind of like whenever he goes down, you fight on, and then he wakes up again after the battle is over. There's no real connection. That, and you don't have Gears' Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago making out. The devs are hoping to get the game out in the next two years or so. Currently, however, Faith and a .45 doesn't yet have a publisher.

So basically they're trying to make non-retarded friendly AI?
God speed them dammit, their task is one of the most noble ones ever assigned.

this looks really cool to be honest. i like games that can pull off a pairing, like PoP:Sands of time. this one does it one step further by making her smarter and more useful. could be good

Also, if nothing else, Faith and a .45 is a really great name for a game. Much more evocative than a lot of game titles.

I can't wait for the homophobes who call me names for playing as a girl in Guitar Hero III to have to bend over and kiss me as I play as a girl in this one. Should be interesting.

@NumberONE: Difference: Gears was fun, Kill.switch was not. Not only does Gears have single-button cover, but it pairs it with several other mechanics that make it extremely fun. Such as... the ease and intensity of running between covers while in the midst of battle, a decent story [for a shooter], and chainsaws.
So to recap: Gears=Good, Kill.switch=not absolutely terrible but not something I'd play again by choice.

You Kotaku writers really need to do your research. GoW made taking cover at the press of a button popular but by no means did it ever start that trend. Please go play Kill.Switch.

Wow, something different for a change. I think this would work only if co-op play was disabled, and the developer just made your partner an a.i. controlled character with its own personality. I really don't want to hear any of my friends screaming "Kiss me goddamn it!" to get them back up.

@darthmole12: Two years is a lot of time to make it happen, so I'd be surprised if they didn't deliver...unless of course, they're a bunch of idiots. I hope they follow in the footsteps of Half-Life 2, because Alyx was the first AI comrade that actually helped during a firefight in my experience as a gamer.

@Stormrider (XBL: Lilarcor): You got that right, I waited all the way through gear's less than admirable campaign mode to actually see a gear, or some kind of overtly mechanical object. Nothing. Why did they name it gears of war?
Now I wait studiously at my desktop, praying that maybe, just maybe, faith and a .45 will somehow involve "faith".

I just hope it doesn't pull a Kane & Lynch and:
- the cover system actually works
- there is ONLINE coop
I wonder why it's called Faith and a .45, though. The title made me think of this one comic featuring a preacher with his large collection of guns (forgot the name, sorry).

If you're gonna make a "period" game, shouldn't your central characters at least look the part?
I'm pretty sure Faith's outfit is little more 80's punk inspired that 1930's dame on the lam... which raises the question? What's the point of marketing your game as set in a certain era if you don't plan of representing it authentically?
Or is the an alternate history depression era? One where the stock market didn't crash and Revlon had already invented flourescent red hair color?
At least that .45 guy looks the part...

Not sure about the kissing gimmick but it got me thinking.
An interesting game mechanic would be coop powerups or perks, i.e. staying within x meters of your partner gives you extra ammo, partner takes 0 dmg in a stage gets you extra health, etc.
I don't play many coop games so perhaps these types of things have already been implemented.

The perfect date game. Everytime your character kisses the other persons character, the two people kiss in real life. Though, it would be awkward with two heterosexual guys. But, you could always say you were just fixing his mustache with your tongue.
