Iwata Apologises For SSBB Delay
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 7:31 PM on January 22, 2008
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata might not be funny, but hey, at least he's apologetic. In the introduction of his latest "Iwata Asks" interview on Wii.com, he writes:
Hello, Everyone. My name is Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo Co., Ltd. Beginning today, I would like to deliver an interview that explains the vision and the development process behind the creation of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. But before we begin, I would like to offer an apology.Classy, thanks! Click in the link below for an interview between Iwata and Super Smash Bros. Brawl creator Masahiro Sakurai. It's worth a read. With the completion of the game falling behind schedule, we were unable to keep our promised release date, despite our greatest efforts in attempting to release this game on time. I would like to extend my most sincere apology to all of our customers that are anticipating the title's release, and also to our retailers.

@ConfuciusMax:
the game is pretty much out in Japan. Someone got it early and already posted the character selection screen.
Don't worry, it's not delayed.

It's a very interesting interview. My only beef is that it's going to be continued another time. They should have finished the interview and given it to us all at once. Oh well, no big deal.

Actually, Iwata interviews other Nintendo staff. Or in this case, ex-Nintendo staff (Masahiro Sakurai no longer works for Nintendo since he left HAL).
Still, it's an interesting series of interviews.

I love Iwata Asks. It really gives you insight into what goes in to making these high profile games and what sort of issues the devs had to go through on the path to release. Though Iwata really does know how to make his guys look good. Like when he says:
"My decision to pursue the project in this way rested on one point and one point alone, and it is deeply tied to the point about which I have the utmost faith in a man named Masahiro Sakurai. To state it simply, you are capable of taking a project with nothing and visualizing a completed game almost perfectly in your head."
You can't help but think 'man that Sakurai is a genius'. Then you realize that Iwata says stuff like that about all his devs. :P

Call me a bit ungrateful, but I don't want an apology from Iwata, I want an apology from Reggie. Iwata had the game delayed a week. Reggie thought that a month would be sufficient for whatever it is NoA has planned.

This delay is most likely a move to release the game during a time of healthier Wii hardware supplies. The game is already gold in Japan, so unless something is going wrong in localization (doubtful) the US version should be going gold in no time.

Brawlcentral apparently has a picture of the "starting character roster" as well as a picture of the Super Smash Bros. Brawl game disc. Nothing has been officially confirmed yet. Although, I am a bit concerned since Capt. Falcon is not shown unless he's a hidden character or replaced by a new secret character.
By the way, if you look closely at Zelda's picture, you'll notice that Sheik is also in it.

Delaying should've happened to Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions.
Lousy, quick-buck port job by Square-Enix. Habit of theirs to put a little eyecandy for people to overlook the horrible programming.

Ok, look, I can understand how there can be delays behind games. Fine. Just don't go acting like this game has any kind of 'vision' because pitting a bunch of your franchise characters in a giant mash-up aint exactly original. Just ask Godzilla and anyone he's faced off against is his vs. films.

@Plan303e: Delaying should have happened to a lot of games. Too many have been rushed out the door too soon. If the game's a buggy pile of junk or just plain not fun, releasing it on time sure isn't going to make that all better =\

Posted 8:45 AM 23/1/08
Why should ANYONE have to apologize? The Truth is MORE games need to be delayed. The number one thing you can count on from Nintendo, whether you enjoy the game or not, is few-to-no bugs and/or glitches. I can not tell you how many games I could not complete due to erroneous glitches and bugs. I try not to put too much blame on the developers, but I know that if they were more passionate about their work it would not be an issue. At the same time I try not to put too much blame on the publishers, they could care less how playable the game is, as long as it sells.
