Keighley Sets Mass Effect Record Straight... Or Tries To
Posted by Brian Crecente at 7:15 PM on January 22, 2008
Having had the thrill of appearing live on Fox News to try and clear the waters over a vast video game misrepresentation, I have to say I feel for Geoff Keighley. In the first two minutes the anchor says that Mass Effect has full nudity and sex and a psychologist "expert" talks about statistics show that games are played by young boys and that Mass Effect is all about objectifying women. Oh wait, you can play as a woman too, Keighley points out and the full on nudity? About half a boob for 30 seconds of a 30 hour game.
Keighley totally took charge of the interview. How much, you ask? He goaded their expert, who seconds early was talking about sexism, to call him "darling." Nice, maybe ask him to bend over a pick up a pencil next darling.
Let me end by saying it's obvious that everyone of the people who they had discussing it after the fact have not only never played Mass Effect, they probably heard about it five minutes before they were supposed to offer an opinion. Very shoddy. Though, at least they got his name right.

Wow.
The ignorance displayed here was almost tangible.
Praise to Keighley, though. Shame they didn't let him speak more.

It will be a great day, when the people who grew up during the videogame age will be the ones in the media, who won't fear all forms of electronics due to a lack of understanding.
I look forward to this day.
Until then, I choose to live my non socially acceptable life :D

Y'know, they are ABSOLUTELY 100% percent correct. Our children shouldn't be playing a 30+ hour game and chance upon a sex scene like this at all! They would be more productive and have an easier time jumping on the computer, google "boobies", and depending on daddy's internet connection, have ACTUAL porn to look at, in no time at all! Easy as 1, 2, 3!

This has infuriated me to the point I honestly want to become a big media/news intellectual just to defend videogames. I know I'm never going to stop gaming & it seems like everyone in the world fights against them but there aren't enough Geoff's to defend the industry. We need a Jack Thompson like icon who ever news station grabs, but unlike Jack he actually defends our artform & represents it intelligently.
I'm so angry right now my head is about to explode, I had idiotic people.

Chillingly closeminded, uninformed and ignorant. How is it that these are called news programs when the people communicating do not do thorough research or give equal time to both sides of the argument? I learned about yellow journalism and media bias in 7th grade. Why do people watch programs like these? Is it just to have their own closemindedness re-inforced? I don't expect the anchors to be hardcore gamers, but if they give their opinions on it, I expect that they had spent some amount of time playing the game in question and to not have a general disdain for the entire medium. The brunette sounded like her mind hurt because she couldn't fathom that games had matured past Space Invaders in the past 20 years. That's so condescending and narrowminded.
Note Fox News. I'll show you the same courtesy you show video games. I'll complain, not actually experience you first hand, not support your publisher or advertisers and I'll bad mouth you to all my friends. Thanks for starting the negativity and exclusion.

The whole thing was a sham. I mean all that interview boiled down to was man vs woman where man likes porn, woman doesnt. Its not so much the nudity that was the issue as opposed to the concept of sex in young minds. The woman did have a point in that nobody monitors their kids anymore and the fact that MS even used that as an excuse just shows that they didn't want to deal with it and pass the blame on to the parents in a way where they looked like the good guy.

this is fox. it is run by and for reactionary conservatives. it finds a large audience in america with that. we're in the middle of unwanted wars, global pollution and economic recession; conservatives really dont want to hear about these things because it upsets their strongest beliefs. so instead fox finds things they will like to keep its audience.
it doesnt matter much. all it can really do is increase sales of mass effect, because another thing conservatives are big on is repressed sexuality; they will scream and wail about a sexy game and then secretly rush to buy it, regardless of whether theyve been grossly misinformed.

This is what happens when Ignorance takes reigns over the truth. People truly think they know how to describe an event, or experience, or instance in time, yet they have no idea what that experience encompasses.
At least the Blonde gave Geoff a shot. The "expert" simply used her "Superiority as a Human Being Because I've been labeled an Expert" Medal to make a false point about something she's most likely never even seen.

What's the point on reporting on this and getting someone to defend the game if they aren't even given a chance to do so. This clip disgusted me. Nothing Geoff said was taken to heart or even LISTENED to at all. They could've just broadcast white noise during his replies and gotten the same effect.
How long is it going to be before we can discuss things like this maturely and rationally? As a gamer I am disgusted. Shit, as a human being I am disgusted.

@levarien: In all honesty though, I'm betting very little research goes into these quick 'sound bite' style news stories, whatever the channel. I mean, if you sit down and listen to some of the news sometimes, it honestly sounds like there's a guy in a booth above the studio that is sitting around, feeding them the news stories right before the breaks. Calling any of these types of people as 'professional reporters' is the same as calling me a 'gaming journalist and analyst' because I'm commenting on this news blog, and speculate about things.

@That Girl Hates You: My father is a stuffy old republican white man. He can find the ratings on videogames and not buy them for children if they're not appropriate. The ratings system came about after my sister and I were grown up but he can still find it. (I handed him several games to see what he'd buy if he had an 8 year old kid. He didn't pick any of the games I handed him. When asked what he'd do if the kid said they really wanted the game he said "Too bad.")
So if my oftentimes idiotic father can figure out what games to buy for children and realize that there are games for adults too, these people are beyond any insult on intelligence I can think of....

Its called parenting. It is fully understandable to not want your kids to play this game, but it is something totally different to not want me, an adult, to play this game. The themes in Mass Effect are handled much better than on some network (ecspecially Fox btw) prime time shows. would you rather have your kid see half a digital breast or watch 90% of "reality TV" which does nothing BUT objectify women. And the woman on the panel near the end of the segment who said " I wonder what the kid who is home alone is gonna say- gee maybe I'll play dads game". Well if you did a piss poor job teaching your children to obey your rules then maybe you shouldn't leave them unsuppervised. Or better yet why not get a government official to babysit since your obviously too busy talking about things you know nothing about to actually, you know, parent. And lets just censor all art that anyone anywhere finds offensive. Maybe we can go through all the museums and put little stickers over any naught bits some evil dude painted or sculpted in the past. When you ask the government to do your job you are giving away your freedom.

I love it when they say it shows full nudity. The news show was completely biased and I am not saying that just because I am a gamer. If I turn my TV on any day I'll see more sex and nudity than that. Also, they let Geoff speak for a little under 30 seconds. Too bad his first lines, "first off your wrong", were over shadowed by the lazy maternal figure now thinking it's the worlds fault for her son's hormones kicking in. The sex scene is a good 20+ hours into the game (unless you get the asari consort which is much harder); they make it seem like your this big pimp running around the galaxy spreading sex, lies, and atheism. "Debbie Does Dallas meets Luke Skywalker"? What kind of ignorant jerk would make such bold claims without seeing the video obviously. What the News JUST SHOWED was the entire scene and if it's okay to show on Fox why is it so sinful to be in a video game marketed to children?

I don't understand why the "opposing view" guests even bother. Geoff was able to talk for maybe 20-30 seconds in a 5 minute clip. He is there so Fox can say they offered an opposing voice and continue pretending to be a "News" source. I wish the level headed people that Fox brings in to legitimize themselves would just say no. What puzzles me is how (like someone said) many stores are carding people buying Mature-rated games, plus the 360 has excellent parental controls that can be passcoded (so no, kids cannot get around it). The University of Maryland scientifically tested 50 young boys who played video games. Before playing Mass Effect, only 17% of the boys said they would likely rape and murder in their lifetime. After Mass Effect, however, over 100% said they were more likely to rape and/or murder. Over 100%. "Rape"Box? "Murder"station? You decide.

As for Mass Effect. I am surprised Bioware has not sought legal action against these falsities. These newscasters and anti-gaming puppets should be ashamed for falling for such simple and mindless ignorance. Warning after Warning is put before them and all is bypassed. In the end all they can do is get their 10 seconds of spotlight so they can make more cash on profiteering of their books such as Lil Miss Anti-Gaming there. Which by the way, for someone who is so against "How boys see girls" as a result of these games, that's a lovely "I'm in a sexy girl power pose for the cover of my book to draw attention to it" she's got there... If she truly felt in such a manner, she would have made a bold statement on the cover and let her words speak for themselves, and not sell her image to attract attention.
But what do I know. I am apparently only the minority that is not on mainstream media also having common sense.
Also a note.. What the is with her little laugh when Geoff asks if she has played Mass Effect? What.. Women cannot play video games? Is it below her? Is she too smug to play video games or give a damn about anything other than her book sales? Is it so unbelievable that perhaps.. Just PERHAPS... Really, unless the game has SOMETHING that they can deem to be unacceptable, you wouldn't ever see a single thing about it on a national news program outside of a general 'Gaming violence BAD!' thing, and yet, they also constantly have to come around and tell us just how popular gaming is becoming, about how much money big corporations are making on these things.
I laughed my ass off at this though. I honestly don't think they expected him to actually come out firing, and immediately asked them how much they'd actually played it. Sure, I haven't played it, but who do you think I'm going to trust more? Some snobby psychologist who hasn't touched the game? An airheaded interviewer? The gaming expert, dear ladies, knew exactly what you planned to do before you did it, and shut you up so fast you had to turn right to your 'panel' before he could tear apart your stupid expose on how evil the game is.
By the way, Fox News. If you think that this game is so terrible and influencing on how terribly it desensitizes young males about sexuality and treating women as objects, I've got a real shocker for you. What is very stupid about all of this is that the facts were presented and they chose to ignore them. If they as parents and providers and educators refuse to acknowledge any form of teaching someone to prohibit behavior they do not wish their children can see, what kind of example are they setting for the children themselves?
Do they honestly expect children to grow into their later lives completely normal if their parents were constantly given information and the best the parents could do was gawk at it then change the channel? Or to pose the question in the form of a threat to a provider and when a reasonable response is made telling them what they can do to protect their children - they ignore it?
I am surprised that people like Mr Keighley have not begun telling them "Lets put this in another context for a second"... Explained to them that by ignoring the information given, if the data by research tells them so, they are equivalently ignoring and leaving their children in the wilderness to be devoured by this "evil" that has been labeled incorrectly... If the parents don't want it available, the option is there to disable it in terms of games for this next generation... The Internet has nothing to do with these video games and should not be brought into context. The Internet is a wholely different entity and is not Bioware or Microsoft made.
The Internet cannot be controlled by a single company, and it is up to the parents to supervise that. But in terms of games, the parents do have the right and availability to control what their children do. The box tells them what will be there. The game restriction options are on the console. The time restrictions are on the console. There's a warning on most games when you start them. The parents ignore all and then we get the resulting charade we see on the news such as this.. That is not Biowares fault. If anything, that is a complete failure on behalf of the news and parents.

You know, I never particularly liked Keighley, but he's won tons of respect for me in this "debate" (30 seconds of interruption does not a debate make). He stated the facts and intelligently slammed down who is now my second least liked person on this planet: that douchebag analyst.
Never... in my life... have I wanted to punch someone more.
"I have to go with the research, darling" (or something to that effect, I will never suffer her voice again), even though the research would logically be less accurate than the actual facts of the game. Keighly tries to set her straight once more, but is interrupted by a panel of unbridled stupidity. Why no AO rating? Because it's not porn. There's no full on nudity, but the truth is easily ignored. "Let's play dad's games!!"- an isolated incident which, among others, would be avoidable with actual parenting.
This video caused me physical pain, but it's one I think every gamer should see, especially if they are in or plan to work in a videogame field.

I'll never understand the US. I watched my first erotic movie when I was 13, because back then private television was rather new in germany and they allways used to air bad 70s soft core after midnight to get more viewers.
You'll see naked boobs on commercials and TV shows in the afternoon in europe. Prostitution is legal, soft core erotic movies are rated 16+ in many countries.
This list could go on forever.
And guess what? I've never treated a woman like an object in my whole life. And neither have my friends. My pals who've spent the nights at my house when my mom was gone and used to watch those crappy porn movies together with me are all married, have children and are wonderfull husbands and fathers.
"Parenting is so hard nowadays.."
Yea, it's sooo hard. Like, you have to show interest in your kid's interests and, like, talk to them. Try to understand them.

Kudos to Keighley for being rude and arrogant enough to actually get some words in edgewise on the overbearing host and other guests. That's the problem with most "news" these days. Reasoned arguments are drowned out by soundbites and shouting.

Geoff handled himself well. Managed to put out some good points and discredit both the people who were against him as people who hadn't actually experienced the content in question themselves.
Seriously, they go on about how a kid could play their dad's video games, about how a kid can find it if they want to, but parents can choose whether or not to keep violent games in their homes, whether or not to block specific internet content, whether or not to sit down and candidly discuss the subjects with their kids. A parent can either be responsible about it or they can't.
You REALLY can't let your kid be more clever than you are during their formative years.

Oh, the ESRB needs to have their heads examined? You need to have your fucking head examined you shithead - What? are you going to sort through hours of gameplay and assign Mass Effect a rating? No? Well then shut the fuck up. Fucking sensational, ratings-whoring fox news - I hate them beyond all words. By giving games such a negative image in the media (again, just for ratings) their potentially stifling technological advancement, and fucking damaging society. I absolutely hate when "journalists" (the people in this video don't deserve the title) go on and on about something they know nothing about. And an ass? An alien's ass? OMG! Someone call the ass feds! Anyone remember NYPD Blue? THAT was an ass worth censoring and while it caused a stir, it was on TV (coincidentally, also NOT marketed to children as they claim ME was).
That dolt read MS's statement about parental control and play-timers, then swept right into saying that parent's are helpless to control their children unless they hover over them every second. Well, fuck me in the ass -she might as well have said, "parents shouldn't have to act like parents because every young boy is a porn-sniffing boob addict. And we all know that boobs will absolutely obliterate ALL developing minds and desensitize them to the point of utter sexual deviance. Even if someone older in the house purchased the game, it's still up to the parents to watch their child. If your child plays the 30 hours it takes to reach the sex scene, unknown by you, then you need to be more worried about your ability as a parent.

I thought that the love scene in Mass Effect was very tastefully done. If anyone has seen the movie "The Illusionist," it reminded me very much of that. However, their argument was completely biased. None of them had even seen what they were talking about, and not one of them even knew what they were talking about. They never once mentioned anything about movies either. One reporter mentioned that once the games are in the home, the kids will play them, but what kid would honestly pick up Mass Effect to play it for the love scene. Come on, as Geoff Keighley said, that's not what the game is about. Also, I think that there are PG-13 movies that are much more graphic and violent. These reporters just seem to want to control their children like Big Brother. ***Personally, I think that the media with all of their news stories about death and destruction are probably desensitizing kids the most to violence, as they are showing them that the real world is full of it and not full of good things as well.***

Why is it that games are the only media that you can bullshit about on national television without someone saying something?
You couldn't start condemning a movie or book you googled five minutes before broadcast, why are games any different?
The industry is bigger than Hollywood now, yet it's still treat as a children's media.
Fact is, parents aren't willing to take responsibility. As Keighley said, the 360 has parental controls. These parents don't know this however as they take no interest in their children's activities. If they actually spent some time with their kids looking into what they enjoy they could easily provide a safe and appropriate playing environment.
A good friend of mine was fired from a games store recently for informing parents of the content of age restricted games that were being purchased for their children because it was detrimental to sales! If the stores aren't trying to uphold the laws and the parents are too stupid to look on the back of a box, then it's little wonder they act so surprised when they realise that GTA contains murder, sex and mindless violence.

FULL digital nudity?.. I saw those videos.. They were as covered up as a TV Soap Drama sex scene. Their is absolutely no full nudity in the game, in fact DOA has more nudity. But no one bitches there. People gotta drop the act and argue over whats really bothering them. The fact that there IS sex in an M rated game. Why are people trying to make it sound worse than what it is? They do, however have a case in which an M rated game does have sex in it, and their children are discovering it. ALTHOUGH, M stands for mature - so i take that back. They don't have a case. It's all the irresponsible parents' fault who give their young children these games and ignore the rating system.
Aye... people are just so stupid.. No one ever wants to take the blame, even when its so obvious its their fault..

Wouldn't be much different than what I just saw in the clip (people talking shit about something they know nothing about, then each one of them taking turns regurgitating the same shit).
Speaking of which, why don't they do a story about that? That site is incredibly easy accessible by anyone with a computer and an Internet connection.
Won't anyone think of the children?!

Fox news, where our cameras are glued to dead rich blond white girls in a foreign country, but not the poor dead Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American girls in our own country!
Someone had to say it!

I don't know about you guys, but personally, I always value a woman who can save the universe from total and utter annihilation.

IMO, Kevin Mcullough and anyone else who thinks that Mass Effect is all about sex should watch Mass Effect: Sci vs Fi or at the very least watch the trailer for it. If they did, they'd see that Mass Effect is nothing like they thought it'd be.

I blame kotaku. Had ya'll not blogged about it, there wouldn't be this media uproar.
First rule about alien lesbo sex scene:
YOU DONT TALK ABOUT ALIEN LESBO SEX SCENE.
Besides, this is Fox News, which has as much journalistic integrity as Cracked Magazine.

Outside of Keighley, that has to be one of the most uninformed, craze-inducing pieces of rubbish I have ever heard.
There are plenty of choice quotes from this piece, but my 'favourite' has to be: "Is Luke Skywalker meets Debbie Does Dallas a good thing? I don't think so." Perhaps the stupidest thing I've ever heard, and I study politics!
The funny thing is, they kept going on about the 'state today' of children. In fact, I think this whole ordeal has displayed how problematic discussing such matters is.
We keep telling them (and I use 'we' because we're in this together) until we're blue in the face that these games DO NOT contain the suggestive themes that they proclaim, and that as video games become more and more complex (in terms of visuals, sound etc), then naturally story lines will also become adjacently complex.
"I feel so old, what happened to Atari and Pong?" Said one moronic Fox News panelist. Well, what happened to cinema? Does she honestly think films like Dead Man's Shoes, The Woodsman or Fight Club would have been allowed back in the 50's?
Just in case these catastrophically ignorant people are reading this, let me make this final point:
Video games, as a medium, is still in it's infancy. Much like any other medium - the press, film, television, it's youth is almost counter-productive. It's a very decentralised medium, with the larger community struggling to accept it as a comfortable medium unlike the aforementioned forms of communication.
You have to stop this "Won't someone think of the children?" attitude, because The Simpsons parodied that a long time ago, and you didn't listen.

ARGH
Thats my response oh and going "LALALALA, you don't know what you are talking about."
Come on the sex in there is tasteful and beautiful and not very reviling... Come on Matrix is/was market to adolescent boys yet look at their sex scene.
OK No more of this... Or else I'll just get angrier, back to playing Some Mass Effect.

Lmao. Shes funny. If you read the back of a book, do you know what the full contents of said book is about? Or if you watch a trailer for a movie, have you seen the whole movie?
Geoff did the best he could before being cut off, the fact is Mass Effect has nothing to do with sex. Its a small love scene near the end of the game, that he rightly pointed out not everyone will get. Got to love how they basically gave him no chance to talk compared to the woman though that seemed to have a huge opinion from what she even admitted was "just trailers" off the internet.
Just another excuse to complain about videogames.

"When you buy your video games...which I just had my first experience recently...you have to pick up the box and look at the back for the rating."
What backwards ass game was she shopping for? Every game I own has the ESRB rating clearly printed on the FRONT cover.
She mentions that twice.
And as for the panel, the last guy was the only one who seemed to have the right idea.

Forget to mention the idiot that suggested an adults only rating for the game. That's like suggesting that Braveheart should have been rated X...

I'm not sure because I never had the need to do it but I thought the 360 parental control would also restrict what type of games kids could play, eg: Rated E-M. If thats right then that just makes the 3 panelists point moot. Seems to me like she doesn't even want adults/husbands to be playing Rated M+ games.

Ignore these people. Don't watch the channel. Don't give a second's thought to anything that they're saying. This doesn't matter and it won't affect your life. The ONLY thing that you can do by responding to this is show that their particular brand of idiocy is worth purveying for the buzz.
Btw, $100 says that the only reason this is coming up at this stage is because of that idiot who wrote the article on Mass Effect being some sort of virtual-rape-a-tron. Because people responded to it as a controversial story, Fox News picked it up. Go figure.

I'm sad that no one mentions Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City, or Gamestop's carding policy. My 44 year old dad got carded for buying an M rated game. He doesn't have to get carded when he buys alcohol, but he does when he buys a game.

I'm trying not to laugh, I really am. But in all seriousness, this is very much expected of Fox news... or a great percentage of conservative adults who don't know what a "parental control" is or doesn't care about video games at any level. We need to be in positions where we can expose and educate audiences about this form of entertainment. And even then, I think Fox will continue to be infested with ignorant drones.
