Masthead Reveals Post-Apocalyptic MMO Earthrise
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:20 AM on January 24, 2008
After World War 3 the Earth lies in ruins, with all but a small pocket of humanity completely wiped off the face of the planet. A clone-based Utopian society arises, but the strict controls required to maintain such a utopia have begun to garner harsh opposition. This is the world of Earthrise, a post-apocalyptic MMO just announced by Bulgarian developer Masthead Studios.
"This will change the way we play sci-fi MMOs," said Atanas Atanasov, CEO of Masthead Studios. "Our team is creating a game that will introduce the next innovative approach to the genre, and we feel to MMOs themselves. We based the game in a vision of society's future, where the technology and economics of today have ensured an unavoidable cataclysm. Earthrise won't be just an MMO, but an experience in a new, never-before-imagined post-apocalyptic world."
Players will choose to side with the new world order or toss their hat in with the shadow government seeking freedom from the oppressive regime. It reminds me a bit of the battle between Omni-Tek and the Clans in Funcom's Anarchy Online, but in a genre struggling to find quality science fiction fare I am willing to forgive Masthead the odd lapse in originality if they are willing to deliver a quality high-tech MMO experience.
PVP sounds particularly interesting, with customisable power armor and mechanised exoskeletons prominently featured - two sci-fi elements guaranteed to get my attention. Add in the intriguing possibilities involved with the potential to episodically reveal what the rest of the world looks like post World War III and you've got quite an intriguing little package.
Masthead plans to have Earthrise ready for release in 2009. For more information and pretty pictures, check out the game's official site at Play-Earthrise.com.
Masthead Studios Unveils the Post-Apocalyptic WorldIndependent developers to release their debut title Earthrise
January 23, 2008 - Sofia, Bulgaria - Masthead Studios, the innovative independent game development studio based in Bulgaria, is proud to announce its debut MMO Earthrise, a post-apocalyptic science fiction title slated to release in 2009.
In the aftermath of a catastrophic third world war, Earth lies in ruin, and mankind is all but extinct. In a small corner of the world a new society has risen in the years following, populated mostly by the clones of those stored in a massive DNA database compiled at the end of the war. A corporate government has created a seemingly Utopian civilization, but its heavy-handed control over society, its resources, and even life itself has forced a substantial opposition. These rival factions accuse the government of crimes against humanity in its rampant willingness to abuse the cloning process to its own gain. It is at this crossroads that players will find themselves: fight as a champion of the new world order, or take up arms with Noir, the shadow government sworn to overthrow the totalitarian rule.
Masthead has employed its own engine to craft the stunning graphics and atmosphere in the game, as well as to handle its dynamic combat mechanics. Explore the diverse and sprawling capital city of Sal Vitas and surrounding unclaimed territories. Fight with advanced PvP mechanics featuring customizable power armor, huge mechanized exoskeletons, and an arsenal of weapons to control contested lands and their resources. Influence the market-based economy by working for the corporate world or trading on the black market, all based in immense and highly customized crafting and offline play systems. Players will shape the society in the beginning of a new mankind; or they will create their own dystopia.

Hmm...the story sounds carbon-copied from Appleseed, but at least the screenshot looks nice

@Rockstar Ghede: To clarify: They aren't good because they do that. The italics is important. Just realized my ambiguous wording in the last sentence. They are good, but those aren't the reasons they are good. Yeah. That is how I should have put it.

I love the idea of a real Post-apoc mmo. Neocron is kind of cool but filled up with n00bs which has pretty much killed it for me and my friends.
@MEGA-DRIVEN: The problem with it just being survival, is everyone hates the tedious grind just to survive. If I have to spend all day trying to get food and water to build a shelter that will act like second life, I would rather not play.

When will they learn?
"Let's make a revolutionary new MMO!"
The way of doing that is not the following:
"We will put it in a brand new setting!"
"We will create an unholy fusion of a different Genre!"
"We will change the way we ream your wallet!"
And any combination of the above. There are good MMO's that do any and all of the above, but they aren't good because they do that.

I love the post-apocalyptic genre and really got into Neocron because of it. I like their idea of customizable vehicles and the pieces of back-story they've released.
This sounds like an interesting take and would be worth a free month trial (if they offer one). (I don't see it on their site - any word on an open beta?)

That's what I was thinking. IS there a sci-fi MMO? Other than Phantasy Star?

Sounds interesting, but I am still waiting for any kind of post-apocolyptic game based on pure survival, that doesnt have mutant bug things, super soldiers, exo-skeleton armor, etc.
Please, just let me scrounge around a blown out wasteland for food, supplies, and simple tools, and build a fort/homestead.

Now watch, World War 3 will actually happen and then they'll be all like 'oh noes we have to delay it so we can change all of the in-game references to world war 4'.
Aw, who am I kidding. You don't need an excuse to have a game delay!

Not bashing the game. I think it's pretty cool that the story is nearly identical to Appleseed's. If nobody will make a decent game out of that world, might as well let someone take a stab at something like it.

Meh. Another MMO. Not every game can be WoW you know.
WoW was successful because there was already a built in fan base for the game ala the Warcraft series. Put Blizzard's stamp of excellence on it and you got a game that can appeal to more than just the hardcore MMO player.
Plus... honestly is there a game out there that does MMO better than WoW out there? I mean they created a gorgeous universe to play in, and made it accessible to just about any computer made in the last 4 years including laptops. And its easy to get into and easy to accomplish a lot on your own, even if you don't have much time to play (or much skill).
I don't see how any other game can compete. Well... Warhammer on-line looks pretty good too..

@Herodito:
Say, that gives me an idea.
Coming soon: A new MMORPG set in a post-creativity world.
After yet another WWII game, all but a small pocket of originality has been wiped off the planet. A clone-based dystopian games market arises, but the lack of quality found in this market have begun to garner harsh opposition.

Oh my golly, developers ranting about innovation in their mmorpg? This looks just generic enough to be fun! I'll buy 3 collectors editions as soon as they're available.
On a more serious note, in a genre so crowded they are going to have to pull of a miracle to get even a tiny tiny slice of the marketspace. They're really only competing with other mediocre SOE mmorpgs.

I'm getting mighty tired of these "post-apocalyptic" dystopias where, despite the collapse of civilization, everyone still showers daily, and all the gear looks like it just came off the factory floor.

You know, for all that I hate them too, the Press Release is too easy a target, because they're just a boilerplate at this point. You see the same quotes, the same bullet points, everything. They're not for gamers; they exist to satisfy investors and the business side of things. This is why so many games get revealed before their offical press release comes out; they do a 'gamer reveal' and a 'buisness reveal'.
On the other hand, 'never before imagined post-apocalyptic world'? Okay, flame on, folks.

I don't see that much of a comparison to Anarchy Online. While that game's storyline had a nuclear holocaust, it was only in the prequel book 'Prophet Without Honor' and the game itself occurs nearly 30,000 years in the future and on a distant planet. I also don't see in the published description any option to be part of a 'third' faction (aka Neutrals in AO).
All the elements described can be traced to prior work but it's just about impossible nowadays to have truly 'original' content. We'll just have to wait and see how it is when it comes out and how the company executes..
