Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection Available For Pre-Order at PlayAsia
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 12:45 PM on January 28, 2008
For those of you who felt gypped by not being able to get a US version of the MGS Anniversary Collection, it seems that Konami is throwing you something of a bone. PlayAsia is currently taking pre-orders for Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection for the PS2 that includes the original Metal Gear Solid as well as the directors cut of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. The listed price is $US 34.90 plus a $US 4 dollar shipping charge. If you are looking to delve into the world of MGS before MGS 4 comes out, this is the perfect way to do it at a reasonably low price.

Dang, as somebody who's never played a MGS game before this is actually a really good deal. I don't have a PS1 memory card so I couldn't save a file for the original MGS, but I could play the other two just fine. I'll have to think about this.

Nice! I'm in for one of course, just for collecting. Anyone not currently in possession of all three should really jump on this. MGS2:Substance in particular is an amazing value, with incredible added value content in addition to the masterpiece that is MGS2:Sons of Liberty. As the owner of a small VG retail shop, I virtually never see any Substance or Subsistence come in used.

As for MGS1, if you settle for Twin Snakes on GC, you can get that damn cheap too and to settle it all out, MGS3 isn't very high in price either. Overall I'd say you can probably buy them all individually cheaper than that collection is selling for.

Twin Snakes in my opinion is MUCH better in execution than MGS1, but mostly (for me) because of the addition of the stamina bar.

@PriorMarcus:
Since they mentioned the Director's Cuts, I'd assume they'd mention if it was Twin Snakes or not.
I'm partially through Twin Snakes, with a friend doingm ost of the playing(I apparently can't understand the concept of stealth gameplay, and avoiding combat) but this looks like a good way to avoid going to GameStop and buying 2 probably used games. I'm assuming Director'sd Cut is a BETTER version than if I bought the normal version, so I'm getting this.

@PriorMarcus:
Twin Snakes for the GC is just like the PS1 version, except with improved graphics and changed dialogue in a few places. Alot of fans like the PS1 version but Twin Snakes is good in its own right. If you don't have the two games this box set would be your best bet and have the original PS1 game is nice treat for the fans.

Damn I hope Q2 2008 could get here already so I can grab 4.

I know this might be a dumb question, but is Metal Gear Solid the Gamecube remake version, or the original?
Also... I would love to buy this, it would honestly be one of my most anticipated purchases of the year, and it would push me to really start saving up for a PS3 (I know, that sounds bizarre, but along with Metal Gear Solid 4 this would be a dream) but the lack of backwards compatibility makes it impossible to actually justify getting this, as I plan to get rid of my PS2 when I finally move onto the current generation of Sony. Such a shame. No sarcasm either.

Now, I have all the games but I was looking forward to getting the slick ass metal box and the DVD to add to my collection:

Yes, MGS3 is where the narrative starts chronologically, but there's certain formal elements to the structure of the MGS plot which generally dictate that it's best to play them in numerical order.
The star wars prequels for example, function on the idea that you already know who Darth Vader is. The MGS prequel also functions to some extent on the idea that you already know who Big Boss is (kinda).

I have gone through 1 copy of Marvel vs. Capcom 2, 3 copys of FF7, 2 copys of Castlevania SOTN, ect... in the 8 months I have been doing this, it brings in quite a profit, you just have to know where to look, The other day i came across a copy of Secret of mana, a copy of Xenogears, and a copy of Mystic Quest for under $20. Great series, great games.

@PriorMarcus: It'll be the PSX original. Though I'd love for the Twin Snakes to get ported to the PS2, it's unlikely to happen. Maybe someday it'll make it to the PSN...

Ooooh, the artwork is so sexy ;_; But already have MGS, Twin Snakes, 2, 3, and Subsistence. It would be nice to have Substance. I'm also curious as to whether or not the "director's cut" they're talking about for 2 and 3 includes more content than Substance and Subsistence (but I'm fairly positive they don't).
I work at GameStop, and if someone trades this in, I'm stealing the boxes for all the games >.> Also, I have a feeling the MGS for PSX is still in PSX format.

so if its english/US, why not released here? that's so weird. yeah, i want the tin box, but if were not getting that, ill jump on this, which is odd since i got substance & subsistence, just lost MGS1.

on a side note... i always wished that konami would have done a updated mgs1 like how they did for he gamecube. that would be awesome.... but nevertheless, MGS1 remains my favorite game of all time, with FF7 in a close second.

Ordered, if only for MGS1. I sold my copy a couple years back for MGS: Twin Snakes, but it's nice to have the original. I already have MGS2 Substance and MGS3 Subsistence, but I guess I could get rid of those. A bit odd that play asia of all places is taking the pre-orders...'cause you know, they're kind of an import store. Hopefully GameStop will eventually sell this so I can get my employee discount.

For all the people asking whether the version of MGS in this bundle is updated in any way, ever considered looking at the image? Clearly, the MGS box says "PlayStation" whereas the other two says "Playstation 2". There, mystery solved.
As for Play-Asia, started shopping there after Lik-Sang was closed down. Never had any problem with them, even with the base shipping (around $3) it rarely takes longer than a week for things to arrive.

@Lally: Jesus Christ, no, it's not. There's no evidence to suggest that the term refers to gypsies.
As for the topic at hand, it'd be nice if they were able to port Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes over to the PS2, if only to have a consistent graphical style. Still, the package is nice for people who haven't played any of the games, I suppose. No real incentive, it seems for people who already own all three, though.

Missed that, I mean, LOL-NTSC/WUT?
Wasn't this suppose to release a bit ago over there and over here? I don't feel like looking it up on wikipedia, then changing the entry to non-factual stuff, such as, "May or may not be released in North America, I really don't know anymore, don't ask me, I don't know, well, I did before overwriting this entry, but don't worry, someone will fix it soon, it'll only be about 30 minutes or so LOLGATOR!!1."

@mariospants: I constantly have good experiences from Play-Asia, but I always use the expensive postage, with the way prices are in Australia (i.e. double US prices, AU$120 for a new PS3 game, despite our fairly strong dollar) it works out cheaper than if I get it from a store even with $22 delivery, and has taken 2-3 days in my experiences. Which was great for Uncharted and my DS3 (late release dates here). But yeah, it might not work out great for everyone.
It's too bad this will be NTSC, or I'd be sure to get it. What with my giving away my PS2 games to my brother after my PS2 broke (read: after I broke it accidentally), and I had a 360 so I wasn't worried at the time, that and my MGS3 is NTSC. But since I got my PS3 I've been hankering for some Solid Snake/Big Boss action. MGS3:S is still AU$50 here on it's own, so that would be a DAMN sweet deal. Even if it is the original MGS1 for PSOne(which it will be). Here's hoping for a PAL release.

I've never played any of the Metal Gear or Metal Gear Solid games, but am interested in doing so before MGS4 comes out.
What's the best place to start for someone like me? A few months ago I picked up a copy of MGS3 Subsistence, but never got around to playing it. Is that as good a place as any?
Any other tips for a MG noob? :-).
