Microsoft Snaps Up EA Chicago GM To Head Gears Of War Project
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:20 AM on January 26, 2008
When Electronic Arts shuttered its Chicago-based development studio, the one responsible for titles like Fight Night and Def Jam Icon, EA prez Frank Gibeau chalked it up to an inability to meet standards for "responsibility for product quality, ship dates and profitability." Tough words, especially when some of that blame was most likely shouldered by former general manager of the studio, Kudo Tsunoda. Fortunately for Tsunoda, he has a new home, with GameTap reporting today that he's landed at Microsoft.
Tsunoda, best known for his fighting games, including a licensed Marvel Comics brawler that may have been scrapped, has been supposedly put to work on a popular franchise. A new Gears of War title is said to be his first project. An interesting fit. And by interesting, I mean, you better not screw this up, Kudo, or you're in big trouble. Oh, and congratulations.

Epic will be making in charge of the next big Gears game, I'm damn certain of that. Compared to their other properties, Gears is where the money's at for Epic. Especially now that UE3 is no longer the only big bad current-gen engine out there for them to rake in the licensing dough. Gears 2 will be a chance for Epic to really pitch the upgrades they've pitched for UE3.
Like The Konamunist pointed out, MS hiring this guy for a Gears project doesn't mean that MS is going to be making the game without Epic in the least.

No it doesn't, but pulling Tsunoda to head up the MS end smells a bit.. Off to me.
Honestly as big as GoW was, I wouldn't be suprised to see Epic farming out it out to an internal MS team. It's not exactly a new tactic in the business, and Epic in the past has given it's sequels to other devs to work on.

Awesome, I love the way Kudo makes games. I really think ICON was a seriously under appreciated game and Fight Night broke some serious ground during the transition from the 6th to the 7th generation. I'm excited about him taking up the Gears of War project and he'll probably have some good ideas for it. I'm looking forward to some great work from this guy.

@Candlejack:
Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo generally have their own internal teams work with developers on big titles, or IPs that they license out. Odds are Tsunoda will take the place Erika Carlson had on the first Gears of War. (She is the one that the Epic team was not so happy with in the Gears video that was included with the Limited Edition. Just watch the part with the conference call!)

Sorry, but Kudo is NOT the new project lead on an upcoming Gears of War. Talk to my old collegue and good friend, Cliff Bleszinski. I told him about this and he got a hell of a good laugh from it. Whoever the source is for this information, is clearly misinformed. He's trying to get in contact with MS now about this information, because he said it is "clearly misleading."

Apparently none of you have had the disdain to listen to Kudo give a lecture. AI students in Chicago and Schaumburg were able to listen to his lectures on game design, and no one has ever failed so greatly at life as Kudo. The man never removes his sunglasses, constantly takes mysterious pills and drinks Red Bull. He speaks as some sort of euphoric god of game design when all that has come from his "divine" project leading is a mediocre experience at best. Kudo has never made a game worth playing for more than ten minutes, and the prospect of him even touching a franchise like Gears of War just shows the industries own incompatince. Kudo will be the man to ruin what could have been a great franchise, and I for one am extremely disappointed.

@DigitalHero: I'm pretty sure "The Cole Train" was his nickname. When it's first mentioned Dom says "Cole? As in the Cole Train?" to which Cole responds with something in the affirmative like "That's right, baby." This point is also supported by the battle chatter "Can't stop the train, baby!" and the classic banter between Marcus and Cole on the mine-cart level where Marcus inquires about Cole's wellbeing and Cole replies "Are you kidding? The 'Train's' at home on the 'raayyylls'!"
The nerd glasses never come off.

I worked with Kudo in the past and he is a really cool guy. He is very knowlegable about game design and cares a great deal about his employees.
I think that he is a great designer, but just had some bad luck with the def jam franchise. But hey, anyone who was able to put out a gem like Fight Night 3 is ok in my book.
