More Evidence Duke Nukem May Actually Be Released
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 AM on January 31, 2008
Duke Nukem Forever. On a shelf in your local games store. Go on. Try and picture it. Close your eyes, squint real hard, and imagine it. No luck? Understandable. It may get a little easier after hearing this, though. In an interview with Down In Front, the game's art director, Tramell "T-Ray" Isaac, says when asked what stage the game's development is at:
Well, we're doing a lot of polishing of set pieces, environments, and characters. Not conceptualising. Not building. Polishing. Do we dare to hope? Do you dare to hope?

@ARboom:
Yeah, but it's been done since (anyone remember Serious Sam?), and that kind of over-the-top humor won't fly the way it did back in the days of 'take the DOOM engine and pump out some mildly offensive rehash of the gameplay' games came out.
The game would have to stand on more merits than merely being vulgar nowadays, for better or for worse, we've moved past the point where that kind of gameplay experience is going to really stoke the fires of the gaming masses.
I'll wait for a demo to see if it's even remotely worth the demi-hype it's gotten over the last decade.

Witz, I'm sure that the game was scrapped for years and this is only a recent (maybe in the past 2 years since next-gen dev kits went out) effort to bring Duke back. The choice to use DNF as the title, I think, is a good nod at the sense of humor we can expect to be treated to... then again, if they've been working on the title this entire time, well, it better be able to turn water to wine.

I have a hard time imagining this game succeeding.... The old one was successful because 3D games that weren't Doom were novel at the time.
These days, it'll take them a lot more to convince people to buy into it.

@Ampillion : Now with 50% more LJ gaming blog.: You completely missed the point of Duke Nukem. Have you even played it? It's a humor game, it makes fun of all the over the top action stars from the 80s by creating a caricature that takes on a life of his own. Those games were freaking hilarious cause they were so over the top.

I've not been following the saga of this, but, since it has been delayed for ten years, when did they finalise the choice of engine? Are we gonna be rocking some 32x style graphics.
I loved playing DN on the PC, i wonder how badly they will ruin it.

I will put down the critically acclaimed games from last year that I still need to beat, just to put an end to what I thought would absolutely never happen. It was only a year or two ago I thought this game was a long running joke. 3D Realms laughing as they report progress of the fictional shooter as they hold doodles of what the game might actually look like if it was real.

To be brutally honest... this is like launching a brand new IP. And the best-selling new IP in a while, Assasin's Creed, will likely do better than Nukem ever will.
If they expect any brand loyalty to get them sales, they will be sadly mistaken. Former Duke fans will be eagerly awaiting some actual reviews before laying down any more cash, seeing how some of us here have pre-orders from Babbages.

People seem to forget, this is Duke Fucken Nukem. You're not going to get a deep plot with a well thought out backstory, or some oscar award winning writing. This is a game where aliens come to steal the worlds supply of babes.

Yeah its coming this year. Want to know how I know? 2 things said by 3DRealms at various points.
Here goes:
1) Broussard said last summer that because of the problems with this game in the past, there won't be any media "storm" until 6 months before release.
2) When the teaser trailer was released at Christmas, 3DRealms stated that people should watch out for the real trailer that will be arriving "in the coming months".
When the official trailer is released, the media storm obviously also begins and the game is released 6 months later. Note they said in the coming months, not years, but months. That means some time in 2008. Anyone with half a brain about video game marketing knows if you're releasing in Q3 or Q4 of 2008, or even Q1/Q2 of 2009, you want your game displayed at E3. Otherwise its obviously pretty sucky. This is/was a well established franchise so its going to be on display at E3. So I would expect the trailer some time between early March and late April, and if not then, then definitely at E3, which will put it in line for a Christmas 2008 release.

@OpiZA: You probably aren't old enough to remember how LONG ago this was announced, and how many times it was canned. The entire charm and selling power of this games comes ENTIRELY from the fact nobody believed it would ever be released. I was almost tempted to shit in a bag and put it on my local Gamestop's wall with "Duke Nukem Forever" written on it and see if it sold.

@ARboom: Furiursa nailed it. I remember the goofy quotes and ridiculousness, but the gameplay was mediocre. When I was younger, sure, I wouldn't mind so much. But when you're in your late twenties, gaming becomes more about fun than about watching some chop-sockey kung-fu flicks. If I wanted that, I'd just watch a movie, something that doesn't require me to suffer through a poor game to do it.
If this were something entirely new, and trying to instill that same sort of juvenile off-the-wallness in a new generation, it'd have to do something different than it did the first go around, and I just don't think it'd work as well. Not to mention, when we were younger, there wasn't this huge attention to gaming as there is now. Games were seen like kid's toys way more so back then, so your parents usually ended up buying you the game thinking little of it. Nowadays? I think more parents might catch on to it, what with all the glorious news stories about how evil games are.
Part of the problem with basing your game (Or movie, comedy, etc.) around shock value is that you have to constantly one-up yourself to keep people's attention. And unless this thing is going some sort of Postal route, I don't see people buying into it for any reason outside of nostalgia. Or even gag humor. Because that's really all the game has going for it at this point.

Software proceeds to the point where it is ninety percent complete about halfway through the development cycle. If the polishing is currently going on, the game should be out in another 4-7 years, measuring the total development time to this point and using it to predict the time the remainder will take.
