New Brawl Stage Creates Super Mario Bros. Wii-make Lust
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:31 AM on January 24, 2008
With Super Smash Bros. Brawl delayed to March, we just assumed that the Smash Bros. Dojo would be running dangerously on content fumes, posting about cursor changes when one hovers over portraits or scraping the barrel bottom for alternate costume choices. We certainly never thought they'd drop the Mushroomy Kingdom on us, the best looking stage yet. It's a Wii-creation of World 1-1 from the original Super Mario Bros., a constantly side-scrolling level that only makes us long for a remake of the NES classic. We'd totally buy this sort of thing via WiiWare, Nintendo, if you're listening.
That bit on the right? It's the alternate version of the stage that appears randomly, a 3D take on World 1-2 from the same game. Who knew we'd get so turned on by a torch nestled under some polygonal bricks?

Nice on the nostalgia, but it seems way too disruptive in terms of a fighting stage. But hey, I'm not complaining!

What happened, did the Greenhouse Effect happen in the Mushroom Kingdom as well?? I guess those flying ships Bowser used in Mario 3 put out lots of exhaust, huh? Or maybe Mario's doing it himself, with those fireballs he shoots...

Ironically, if you check out the GFAQs board for SSBB, the general opinion is that this stage is horribly unbalanced towards faster characters. Which makes sense, I suppose, if you're into number-crunching fighter tiers and whatnot.

I'm so tired of them doing little homages to Mario Bros in games. Galaxy had it, Super Paper Mario was essentially that and now Smash Bros.
For me it's actually devaluing the original experience, like an aunt who doesn't know you very well and keeps giving you gifts in the same narrow vein for your entire life.

My only issue is that the Super Mario Bros. Ground Theme (also previewed today) sounds a bit too chipper for what's supposed to be the Mushroom kingdom "turned to ruins over the years." Since it almost looks like a Middle East version of the the Mushroom Kingdom, I think I'll try to set the MGS4 music to it.

If Mario gets World 1, Sonic gets Green Hill Zone. That's the end of it.
Also, I love how Brawl keeps designing the game not as its own, but all of the characters' games rolled into one. For instance, this stage is a side-scroller. Olimar and his Pikmin work EXACTLY the same as they do in their game. Sonic justs spins right round as he always has. None of these characters are being taken in any direction that doesn't stray from their roots.

Weird. I'd never have come up with this, but it's strangely appealing. Very out of left field. That old 1-1 we spent so much time with is now but a forgotten wasteland, ravaged by the merciless passage of time. We were so young then, so innocent. Never did we think the dream would turn out like this...
A shame the music, while interesting, doesn't quite match the visuals.

honestly, I don't think I could be more disapointed with a rendition of super mario brothers. Not only does super paper mario already look better, I think the original mario levels from both of the prior super smash brothers games look nicer. I haven't seen a mario game look less like mario since Mario is Missing. Damn, Mario Teaches Typing looked more like mario than this mess.
