New Street Fighter IV Screens Show Ryu's "O" Face
Capcom has released a batch of new Street Fighter IV screens and they are down-right fierce. Sorry for that abominable pun, but the hadokens actually do look rather good, even if these screens seem alarmingly familiar. We'd certainly like to see a new character or stage sometime soon, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. Here's to hoping the AOU 2008 show will prove that theory wrong. Anyway, there are eight of these new lovelies, still providing the same mixed emotions about Street Fighter IV, or as we're about to start calling it, Street Fighter II EX Plus.

Damn! I am so hanging out for this. The only problem i see apart from the fact that theres a very good chance that this game could fail, which i hope not is the xbox controllers. We need a proper 8 way dpad. Lets hope that a dc to xbox controller comes out! :P
As much as I want it to be good, this is shaping up to be the perfect example of why some things should stay in two dimensions.

"Ryu practices his new special "Stench" move on Ken, but thinks he may have followed through."
Game, Set, Match.
TY.
moshakirby
Eek feet on steroids! Okay it's not that bad. :P Gameplay will be solid(better be) so yay SFIV!

Awesome pun.

The graphics are superb, the problem is the art, is ULGY
tamago007
Hurray clipping errors!
Coldbrand
For starters, it seems that they still have a long ways to go. I mean look at that face!
But I think we can solve the mystery of teh bigfoot prints. -Points to their feet-
Haniko
@Strangelove: Oh. I guess the graphics are perfect then.
Erwin
Oh! Oh! Oh! You know what I'm talking about. Oh!
eugaet
Ya know it isn't really that the graphics are ugly, or even bad... they're actually quite nice, from my perspective. It's the character design that sucks. I've only looked at screens that show Ryu and Ken, but goddamn, those two character models belong in an Incredible Hulk video game way before they belong in a Street Fighter game.
baked ham
I don't get it why they are not putting much into the art style & ignoring people complains. why dont they just stick with the demo style they showed! that would make a successful game not this one!
Q80
Want want want want want want want. A new Street Fighter cannot possibly be a bad thing, how could people complain. I just hope to god it has Mokoto from SF3 3rd Strike in it, but seeing as it is set before SF3, that seems unlikely. Poop.
Sam
Worst art on a street fighter ever (except SF1)
tamago007
I hope they still do the falling flaming body effect in the new one. That was kind of cool and could be done well with modern effects.
fuchikoma
Every time I see new screens I like it more and more. I must have this, too bad I suck at SF in my old age.
iamspoo
I think a lot of people are forgetting these types of expressions were in SFII as well. And as usual, it never looks good in still shots. It does look better in motion though some things could be toned down.
I do like how the general look is SFII-ish, including the unusual facial expressions. Hopefully they vomit as well.

There will most likely be a an Americanized version for all the haters. Capcom is planning to place a brown/gray filter over the whole game to desaturate the colors. They're also planning to add a bumped up HDR bloom filter so that we can all feel next gen'ish.
Finally they're planning to more westernize the characters Ron and Kevin will now be a part of an elite milatry orginaztion. Their uniforms will be given a more military bent, with more camo, facial hair and metal plates featured.
Also as a bonus Chun-li will be no longer playable, and instead regulated to the roll of an unnamed intelligance officer that appears in the occasional cinematic.
Look forward to it everyone!
weasl
Hmm, I guess I'm not the only one who thinks the art direction blows. Also, they said they were emulating Street Fighter 2's combat instead of 3's... I liked SF3's combat.
Damn... Well, they better have Elena.
zerbrechen
I really love the boldness of their visual style, it's very refreshing.
Toasticus
@Rubix42: The designs look like SF3's to me. Daigo Ikeno's work was practically unnoticeable when converted to sprite form. But in 3D, you can see his style clearly, and call me crazy, It's not that bad at all.
Ridiculous facial expressions and hobbit feet aside, I love the attention to detail the designers put in for the characters arms in particular. The Biceps, brachialis, anconeus, brachioradialis; as an illustrator I appreciate when muscle structure is shown so vividly like this.
KeroseneClimax
@foxuser17: LOL,This game will suck
Aren't you a huge Smash fan and said that shorthop laser was an "advanced" move? I guess you've never played Guilty Gear. There's no need to come into an article for a game you have no interest in and talk shit about it, especially without giving any valid reasons. All you had to do was say "I don't like SF it doesn't appeal to me like other games such as Soul Calibur." Considering that's a subjective statement and an opinion I would've left the comment alone. Just don't say a game is shit, you come off as a troll.
Others have stated they don't like the graphics, which is fine since they gave their own little reasons. Just remember the gameplay > graphics argument everyone loves to preach, which SF games historically have had plenty of.
UmeShoryu
@Guild_Navigator: Not gonna happen. It's been said several times that the game takes place between SF2 and SF3, so Mel being old enough to fight is pretty much out of the question.
I would have liked this to be a real chronological sequel as well, but it sounds like Ono really wanted to cram the thing with SF2 characters to play on nostalgia. I guess what SF3 fans want isn't that important to them because they know we'll keep playing 3S forever. :P
Grave
damn, ryu's got some octorok action goin on
kidwei
@Strangelove: What explains Ken's bulging eyes, pursed lips look?
Erwin
I was excited about SFIV because I was never a huge fan of SFIII. The more I see of this game though the more I'm not interested. I like the amount of detail they put into the effects and what not but I hate the art direction.
krunkjuice
Did he just hit him with a blueberry slurpee?
iamtehawesome
Has anyone considered the "O" face is because Ryu's saying the "OOO" part of Hadouken?
Strangelove
I really hope this isn't what the final game will look like. Those character models look awful Ryu's eyes look like they could erupt any second. Get some better artists Capcom, I know you have them.
jive238
I loved, the SF:Alphas and SFIII:Third Strike....
Why did they have to make Ryu and Ken look like non-green Hulks?
logicaldefense
That Haduken looks wicked. I can't wait for this game
Dauragon88
I'll just play it and never look at the faces.
KeithCourage
I hope this has more connection to the past ones. It would be cool if Ken's son, Mel and Sean from SF3 had a Ryu and Ken rivalry going. That is if they even show up in this game.
Guild_Navigator
Method acting at it's best, I say.
Buttah
@Rubix42: Yes.
Its 100% Awful. I don't think I'll be getting this game. I mean, it just looks awful, especially the faces. My goodness. That and SF games just aren't too fun for me VF, SC, SSB, those are fun fighting games.
Kaemon
As a result of this screenshot the "Hadoken" will now be known as the "Had-Ooooh, Get you-Ken"
Brutalitarian
Why can't Ryu and Ken resemble the Ryu and Ken of the hand drawn games? The only facial resemblance I see in SF4 is the hair colour. And the fact they're not women.
Neutral_Fanboy
The first sentence, McWhertor, ate my brain.
Yamen
From the first screencap, it looks like Ryu super cancels a normal Hadouken into a Shinkuu-Hadouken, which would explain why that particular screenshot is a little darker. If you remember from SF3 whenever a Super Art was activated the the gameplay freezes, the character gets a blue trail and the screen darkens for a couple frames.
Also, I for one welcome this new massive muscled look for the characters. It makes more sense from a physiological standpoint as they are afterall, do nothing but fight.
UmeShoryu
Haha, Ken is all deer-in-the-headlights in that first pic.
Aethyr
@Rubix42: i agree, thus far it looks alarmingly bad. it's a shame that the awesome trailer proved completely irrelevant.
frostcircus
Superman dat ho!
I think i love Ken's face the most.
Mr. Dark E
I wish they'd stop with the ridiculous-looking stills and just show us more high quality footage. I can imagine the cartoony facial expressions could look a whole hell of a lot better in action, but I don't know who finds these stills inspiring.
Grave
whats with their feet and legs???
foxuser17
Rofl. I can't stop laughing every time I see a new weird expression from this game.
Dudemeister
hahahahhahahahahahahaha
oh god the faces made me laugh so extremely much
i hope they don't fix them
frostcircus
@Kavatar: I just got that. That's great!
You shouldn't have to apologize for puns. I sure don't.
Erwin
LOL,This game will suck
foxuser17
Does no one else think the art style for this game is atrocious? These screens show some nice graphics, but are completely visually UN-Appealing to me.
Rubix42
wtf is wrong with their faces?
It looks like they both have down syndrome... :/
Those fighting effects look pretty good though.
neojam
Christ, I hope they are not forgetting about gameplay and going straight for graphic detail. I'm already bummed the parry system is gone.
alizerothree
This looks a lot better than EX. There, I said it.

@kw4k: I always thought Jordan's face was more tongue-out.
This looks great, I'm excited.

This needs some serious work. Ken's face looks like an Orangutan!
Erwin
I'm not usually one to let graphics get to me but these graphics looks pretty darn ugly to me ]:

Akuma better damn well have Shun Goku Satsu. (sp?)
So long as he has that, I don't need no steenking blocks.

not as nice as the neogaf ones but I made a quick gif out of these:

I'm really getting to the point where I'm shifting from quiet indifference to open annoyance at the design direction of this game. New Characters might have a shot at shifting me back the other way. All this does is increase my predicted value of the variable X in the equation "(Amount of My Time Spent Playing SF2 HD Remix/SF2 on VC instead of SFIV) to the power of X" by an increment of 1.
DaiMacculate
wasn't it Jordan who invented the whole "O" face when dunking
kw4k
@baked ham: Or more accurately, they look like non-green Hulks.

@tomsamson: Ryu & Ken look like hairless gorillas. I don't think I like it.

its the best looking 3d street fighter up to now, but yeah, i can“t help it,these characters all look quite deformed.

"I'll be given her my O face," "O, O, O-DOOKEN"

HADO-O-O-O-KEN!
I like how Ken's face looks like he's trying to dodge a bullet from Ryu's "explosion."
Yea I also want to see new characters too, like Chun-Li or Guile!

As long as Ken still has SA3, I'll be happy!

@Wolf_Dog: With every successive game, the Street Fighter characters pump themselves up with a little bit more of that Bane juice. There isn't a single part of them, aside from perhaps the face, that isn't ridiculously oversculpted. Oh, for a timeline to illustrate!

Anthropomancer
SFIV seems to take the "retro" way of doing games so I dont think they should add new characters, but instead, put the old ones, changed. Like Heihachi got older and older since tekken 1
Maybe Sagat with 2 eyepatches and Bison with a wheelchair like SF the later years.. lol
Wyld
@McWhertor: "We'd certainly like to see a new character or stage sometime soon, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen."
my guess is that they're scared of not getting the attention of long time fans and investors with characters that everyone knows. it's easy to get attention with ryu and ken and even easier to worry about early reactions to new characters.
then again, i don't design video games. i just observe and play.
PGGB
For pictures, it's very nice. I'd like to see the animation.
Madoc
When did these guys get so damn large??
Wolf_Dog
@Gadgetron: so Ken is going to ride the "bone roller coaster"?
speaking of which... anybody ever notice how freakishly huge Zangeif's package was? scarry

@Saint Anima (PSN = PoeticMassacre):
Have you gone back and looked at ANY of the characters from the original Tekken? They all look pretty freakin hilarious nowadays.
gray665
I laughed way too hard at that first sentence.

This is the only fighting series that always grabs my attention. Perhaps it's all those hours of my youth spent at the arcades with SF2.
Ah, memories...

Ryu looks like someone kicked him in the junk...
...but I'm still stoked about this game!
jinpei05
Looks awesome, the only thing that would concern me is the huge special effects would mask your character and make you lose track of position or the other player.
Strangelove
I love the SFX in these pics. They are definitely doing some unique things with their engine.
fulgore66
You're excused for "downright fierce". I've always loved that one.
Kavatar
Wow - I like the blue accents from the light on Ken's clothes. I hope they do a lot more of that sort of thing.
I'd like to see this in motion, though - does the Hadoken itself darken the stage momentarilly?
Tonx
Ryu reminds me of Law in the original Tekken. His "O" face was always hilarious in the opening cutscene.
Saint Anima (PSN = PoeticMassacre)
so Ken is going to ride the "bone roller coaster"?
Gadgetron
I like it.
Ashurahori
Hmm... I agree.
Street Fighter 4 EX
DigitalHero
OMG. This game looks absolutely delicious!
romieyo_477
Oh man that "O" face is almost as bad as hotdog arms.
Destrudo
Haha, looks like they still got some work to do.
Chillblain
faces = horrible, i don't much like the giant hands and feet either, reminds me of that old ps2 fighting game.... grapple something.. but, the rest of the game looks cool, i hope it's as fun as the 2D versions have been.
essko
ooo these actually look pretty good, faces still look kind of... stupid, but hey its getting there.
and why would you folks want another third strike anyway? If you want third strike play thirdstrike, I know i would probably still be playing 3s even when this comes out. But I hope this will be something refreshing, new system = new variations = new fun... bring Dudley back tho ;-)
thisbeatisbadass
@Kirkpad:
This game is 2D. It just uses 3D models. Same as New Mario Bros, Sonic Rush, the new Castlevania for PSP, the upcoming Bionic Commando remake, etc...
Lackshmana
This game is not appealing to me, SF is meant to be 2D IMO. Seems to me like Capcom is cashing in on a franchise.
Kirkpad
Why does it seem like there are so many people who haven't played Street Fighter II? This is ridiculous, I'm 22 and I played that game like no other when I was little. How are you older folk not in the loop?
Jaimz11785
Has anyone cared about the SF series since the 16-bit era???
crescentfresh
They look like apes with their giant hands and feet.
brello
I really don't like their faces. They looks really weird. EIther way I dont usually go crazy for the looks as long as the game play is manageable! Please don't fail me
Shindokie
man, these graphics really are terrible. i don't know when i'll get used to the look of this game. i'm really hoping it happens shortly after playing. i really wish they would have done hi-res sprites. so much for capcom outgearing guilty gear.
i know it was you, ono. you broke my heart.
thaKingRocka
...and damn(!) it looks sexy! Do Want!
okenny :)
LOL! These screen shots are like a visual journal of a Ryu beat-down session on Ken!
okenny :)
I for one am really looking forward to this release. Another installment of SF has been long overdue. Love the facial expressions on Ryu and Ken. Classic.
AnimeWP.com
LilBigMac
Sometimes I do a double take at the shots to make sure I'm not missing something cool and new, but not even seeing the game in motion has helped. Speaking of the game in motion, what was up with the weird pauses that made all the special moves look weird and jerky? It didn't feel good. Was that supposed to be a reference to the limited sprite count back in the day? It just didn't sit well with me. Maybe we're just seeing the game too earlier. Time will tell.
Dang-fuzz
@UmeShoryu: Hey,i had to say it.I love street fighter games,i own several of them, but now that ive seen gameplay before i just can't get into this game.I was interested in this game when i heard it was coming out,but every time i see a street fighter 4 news they are bad news.
foxuser17
The Neogaf gifs honestly look MUCH better than these pictures. So don't despair just yet! AKUMA
Krytha
Didn't we already play this in the SF EX series??? YAWN.
Capcom should have focused on a new IP instead.
GoonieGooGoo
Gotta love the face Ken makes before getting Shinkuu Hadouken'd, its saying something among the lines of
"Hey dude you should really start blocking NOW!"
Belias
@Dang-fuzz: Agreed. The more I hear about this project the more I get the feeling were on the verge of another EX.
WretchedSpawn
@Shinamano: Thank you, it looks so much better in motion that what I could gather from stills.
@Strangelove: "Has anyone considered the "O" face is because Ryu's saying the "OOO" part of Hadouken?" -I thought that much would be obvious!
Josh*
Either the Capcom screenshot guys are terribly overworked to have missed the O face, or have a wicked sense of humor, to choose that pic for release. I vote for the latter.
kftgr
@Dang-fuzz: agreed. I hate this shite. SFIV should have be a 2D masterpiece that goes far beyond the GG series but instead we get THIS. I don't like the look of it at all and why do Ken and Ryu STILL look too similar even in 3D? Didn't Capcom notice that even though Ryo, Robert Garcia and Takuma in Art of Fighting all practice the same form of karate that they still look and fight a differently?
"sigh" is this is what is to become of street fighter then I'll pass and just stick with VF5 for my 3D frills and go back to the capcom classics on Dreamcast.
Striderhayasa
I can't help it--every time I see these new shots I cringe. If this were 2-D animation on the level of Guilty Gear or above then I would be over joyed. I would be in love with Capcom again. It's just we've seen NOTHING so far that make me think that this game will be any better than the EX series.
Dang-fuzz
Aren't these just stills from the video footage a couple weeks ago?
While I'm not liking the direction they decided to go with the game, I'm kinda interested with how they can use the 3D models for other stuff, like a CG movie or spin-off games, or something.
Maybe we'll see some more o-face in the future, eh? Eh?
boopadoo
@Coldbrand: I don't really know if you could keep the game playing like SF in 3D without, y'know, body parts going through each other at times. That said, it does boggle the mind that they'd release a shot like this to showcase their new game in development.
Grave
Dude, I cannot wait for this. The graphics I don't really care for, I liked the cartoonier ones in the past games, but I haven't played a new Street Fighter game in so long.
JigsawJones
Honestly, as an avid 3S/Alpha/CvS2 player, I couldn't care less about graphics, or artistic style in screenshots. I want to see fluidity, speed, animation frames. Street Fighter has traditionally been a less than beautiful fighter, that more than makes up in the gameplay department. Looking at screenshots of a game like this isn't going to do it proper justice.
pr0k
they need to make the cloth physics a lot better...they should make em like they do in the NBA 2k games.
J-LI-L-i-LI-S
If the graphics were any better, you'd be whining that you can't recognise the characters.
Sabre_Justice
i'm sold with the graphics but i just hope that the collision detection is as good as 3rd strike
adifferent_hero
@ultimatepancakesensation:
This is off topic, but that isn't the Jack Frost persona from Persona 3, is it?

With that shot I noticed how big his feet are O.o
/insert dirty joke here
That Girl Hates You
@Sabre_Justice: Totally unrelated, besides most people are complaining about the art direction, not the graphics.
zerbrechen
Does anyone even realize how much work it would be to reanimate all the characters by hand for a new game? Why do you think they delayed SF HD? News flash! Most of the SFIII artists probably don't even work at Capcom anymore.
It just breaks my heart to hear all this whining from people who haven't even done their homework. It plays in 2D, not 3D, it doesn't look like it plays a thing like EX and--hey, hold on a second... Didn't everyone expect SFIII to be 3D and they started complaining when it turned out to be 2D? Look, if you hate change that much, just go back into your hole and keep playing 3rd Strike. Nobody will bother you.
king_e_dawg
Their marionette-like limb joints is really doing it for me. It reminds me of those amazing and super-awesome CGI cutscenes I had to sit through on the Sega Saturn during the early '90s. Yes, Last Bronx I'm refering to you.

Those facial expressions look absolutely ridiculous, I cannot get over that. I cant even imagine how Chun-li must look...
