Nintendo DS Bigger Than Jesus This Christmas
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:46 AM on January 18, 2008
We won't trot out itprintsmoney.gif this time, because that animated image simply doesn't do justice to newly released hardware sales data from the NPD Group and the staggering figures coming out of Nintendo. The Nintendo DS sold an amazing 2.47 million Nintendo DS units to shoppers in December 2007, nabbing the number one spot and nearly doubling sales of its closest competitor, the Wii. Nintendo DS sales represent about a third of billion dollars in hardware sales alone.
The Wii also had a very good month, beating out console competition the Xbox 360 by a solid 90,000 and trouncing the PlayStation 3, who brought up the rear with a respectable six-figure showing. The December casualty report from the US Console War of 2007 is below.
- Nintendo DS - 2,470,000
- Wii - 1,350,000
- Xbox 360 - 1,260,000
- PlayStation 2 - 1,100,000
- PSP - 1,060,000
- PlayStation 3 - 797,600

This is a terrible article. I am very sure that Nintendo doesn't feel the same way as the author of this article does because that will lead to one being cursed. You dont have to post this on the site, but Woe to you for making such an article. If I were you, I would change this article title real quick.

@Shade: We're not in the habit of gagging reader comments. The article name comes verbatim from the US site - regardless, I'm sorry if it's caused you any offense.
However, we can't really rename articles from the US site. I'd recommend approaching them with your concerns, likewise if you have an issue with the article itself.

Logan, I wouldn't worry about it. I like the title! Besides, do we have figures from the NPD about how many Jesus units were sold? No? Then the DS is _definitely_ bigger than Jesus this year.

I wonder if ps2 sales will positively influence future PS3 sale (due to brand loyalty or whatever) or is every PS2 sold a lost sales opportunity for the PS3?

Impressive numbers for all 3, but the Wii and 360 were a lot closer than I expected. Recognize the trend, as 2008 will be VERY similar.
For the record, though, I think its important for everyone to remember than the NPD is still an EDUCATED GUESS for how much was sold. Not all retailers are represented, some of those being significant retailers.

While these numbers are great for MS in the US, I have two concerns: upcoming roster doesn't look so great, and in terms of worldwide ongoing sales, the 360 is now behind the PS3. Of course, the 360 has more total units sold, but the momentum worldwide is with the Wii and PS3. Blu-ray and better exclusives can only improve the PS3's future. I see the 360 going the way of the... xbox.

What a conundrum for Sony. Their best selling system for the holidays was a system they would rather not have people play! Sure they improved their sales of the PS3, but its not hard to imagine the suits at Sony tearing their hair out wishing that all the PS2 sales were PS3 sales. But discontinuing the PS2 is like burning a huge stack of cash.
Oh, and Nintendo... seriously well done.

Thankfully for Microsoft, their software profits make up for a 3rd-place hardware showing.

You know, I'd love to see a top ten list of the best selling DS games. First, of all regions, then broken down by region.

Wii could have done at least half a million more if they'd fixed supply... 360 had a chance at another couple of hundred thousand had they not started to run out of Premiums and Elites.
Not sure what to say about the PS3 really. Could say be thankful for Japan, but the Wii is utterly crushing it there too.

You also have to consider what 360 sku counts for the majority of it's sales. I believe the Arcade did a good job of being sold due to it's price. So although the PS3 is cheaper than it was before, it's still more expensive than the Wii and the Arcade 360.

The PS3 had a good month with nearly 800k sold. That's the end of the good news for it, though, folks.
- Many have said that the PS3 is tracking as well as the 360 did during its first year. Well, the 360 sold 4.58 million by the end of 2006 in North America. PS3 in 2007? 3.2 million.
- While the Wii led the year in hardware (I'm not counting portables for this comparison), the 360 led in software. The PS3 led in ... nothing. And it wasn't remotely close to the leader in either category.
- Many have stated that 2008 will be the year for the PS3. This is based on some key software that has generated a lot of interest and said interest could turn into sales. While this could happen, the trend for PS3 hardware and software sales in NA do not support that. While I do agree that the PS3 should do BETTER this year we don't know for sure (SIDE NOTE: vgchartz, which proved to be fairly close in its hardware guesstimates for Dec has tracked the PS3 as returning to sub-2007 January numbers so far this year). Video game sales trends tend to be fairly illustrative and relatively steady.
- As for the 360, with sales so close to the Wii in December, what will happen if/when MS decides to drop the price SIGNIFICANTLY? I ask this because the $50 cut last year couldn't have been the real cut. The system has been manufactured for nearly 2½ years, so manufacturing cost are surely MUCH less than they were in Sep 2005 (Sony has reportedly halved the manu cost for the PS3 is much less time). Has MS positioned themselves to drop the price of each SKU nearly $100 in short order? How much will that boost sales for a system that is ALREADY outselling the PS3 consistently in NA?
2008 should be a very interesting year for gaming (lots of potentially great software in particular), but I see the much talked about CONSOLE WARRRRRR playing out much the same as it did this year with the PS3 possibly having a slight increase in sales growth.

So if the DS was engineered by Buddhists does that make the order:
Buddhism > Nintendo DS > Christianity?
^^^For some reason I think that would be an awesome grafitti tag. I'm in an odd place tonight...

@tufty: Huh? I don't see too many named exclusives for the PS3 other than MGS and LBP, and while the games have slowed down since the holiday line-up, it's not as if nothing's coming out. I think many people are deluded. And don't expect FFXIII until 2009, at least in English.

The frightening thing about the Wii sales is, thats probably all they had to sell.
Imagine if they had the kind of built up stock the 360 enjoyed this christmas.
Everything sold pretty well actually, but the DS sales are just insane.

Come on, we're all gamers here - ain't NUTHIN beats 'replay' function, and it's Jesus Christ who GIVES us the 'replay' ability, without Him it's 'reality' setting with extreme violence and NO extra lives. NOTHING is bigger than JC, don't you forget it!

@banmojo:
Good one :)
Looking at these numbers I can't help but think if Sony left BC in the 40GB PS3 a few of those PS2 sales might have been PS3 sales. It's easy to convince yourself to pay more cash for a PS3 to play PS2 games but you also get the Blu-ray player and Metal Gear latter this year.
I'd seriously contemplate getting the PS3 if I was going to buy a PS2. PS2 is $130+$20 for memory card. I'd easily pay $250 difference to have a Blu-Ray player and play the PS3 games.

well, this is it people. This is how the race is going to be from now on. This was the Holiday Season that everyone needed to bring everything to the table. Barring some fantastic, Earth shattering change, the race is set.

Sony sold just about 3 million pieces of hardware in December alone, thats impressive. Dont forget Microsoft blew their software wad in 07 and Sony's software lineup looks great for 08 plus it appears Blu-Ray is going to win the format war. Things are looking good for Sony this year. I still dont understand the Wii's success. I have one and all it does is collect dust. They're way more compelling games out there for the 360 and PS3. And apparently 3rd party titles aren't selling well at all for the Wii. What gives?

@Saint Anima (PSN = PoeticMassacre): I think the general public actually realizes that the Arcade is the gimped version, which is good.

I think this iteration of the console war will end up like the last one, only roles are reversed. Sony and Nintendo have swapped places, with MS still in the middle. Next round I am expecting a shakeout where one of the players will fall out.
