Nintendo Million Sellers Revealed
We recently got a look at the top five selling Wii games in Japan, courtesy of publisher Enterbrain, but Nintendo themselves have released a more expansive list of the first party-published, platinum-plus titles worldwide, giving us a status update on just how well Nintendogs is selling. While the Nintendo DS dog-raising sim boasts an impressive 17.79 million copies sold globally, it's been bested by Wii Sports which, as of the new year, is at 17.85 million copies. Both have probably been helped by their respective hardware bundles, which are factored into totals, but we suspect Wii Sports got the biggest boost of the two.
Solid numbers for new-ish games like Metroid Prime 3, Link's Crossbow Training and Wii Fit pad the top ten, a list equally filled with mini-game comps as it is traditional games. For worldwide Nintendo DS software numbers, make the jump.
Wii
- Wii Sports - 17,850,000
- Wii Play - 9,230,000
- Super Mario Galaxy - 5,190,000
- Mario Party 8 - 4,350,000
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 4,300,000
- Super Paper Mario - 2,160,000
- Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree - 2,000,000
- Mario Strikers Charged - 1,650,000
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - 1,140,000
- Link's Crossbow Training - 1,070,000
- Wii Fit - 1,050,000
Nintendo DS
- Nintendogs - 17,790,000
- Pokemon Diamond & Pearl - 14,170,000
- New Super Mario Bros. - 13,140,000
- Brain Age - 11,710,000
- Brain Age 2 - 9,840,000
- Mario Kart DS - 9,670,000
- Animal Crossing Wild World - 9,200,000
- Super Mario 64 DS - 5,780,000
- Big Brain Academy - 4,610,000
- The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - 3,820,000
- Pokemon Ranger - 2,610,000
- Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Explorers of Darkness - 1,540,000
Looks like Nintendo is gonna be alright. As long as the kids still love them some Mario and Pokemon, they might just be able to keep the lights on.

Pokemon Ranger is actually surprising.
I can't wait for Ranger 2 =D

Wii sports was bundled with the Wii in Europe too.
BishBashRoss
13 mil for NSMB? Please let this mean a SMB or SMB3 remake. Or upgrade. Something. Please. I need more 2D Mario or my head will explode.
That happens to me sometimes.

@okenny :):
Seeing how the wii has the best software tie ratios that means the 3rd parties have the best potential on the Wii.
[www.next-gen.biz]
Any 3rd party not doing well likely goes by the name Midway and makes shite like Cruisin.
frankstallone
@KINBURN,
would it make that much of a difference to the list?
stevemkrenz
@Lachoy:
No had your coffee yet? Re-read the article :) It's a first party list not a complete list of Wii/Ds games that have sold.
Kinburn
Where are the third party games? This is why the wii will never be a great gaming system. Third party devs will stop developing for it, just like the gamecube.
Lachoy
@CortezTheKiller: "cheap controller"? Wasn't the controller by itself cheaper then the WiiPlay bundle? Why did 'everyone you know' waste money on a game they didn't want?
[reads CortezTheKiller's previous comments]
Ahhhhhh..... nevermind.
TKWarrior
Wii Play is no more a "sold" title than Wii Sports is. Everyone I know who bought it did so for the cheap controller and now uses the disc as a coaster......
Here's a new Nintendo game: new uses for a Wii Play disc. How about bird scarer for the garden?
CortezTheKiller
@Blind_Evil: I 'know' because numbers in Nintendo's financial reports are always shipped not sold through.
Not hating when you're right btw.
Nascar
Those Wii numbers are even more impressive when you keep in mind that the best-selling GameCube game of all time (SSB Melee) only sold six million copies worldwide over the system's five-year lifetime.
Mario Galaxy has sold nearly that many in just under three months.
darukaru
I bought a Wii because Nintendo finally promised some 3rd party support. Oh well.
fragdurarsh
@axel000:
I love when people make comments like those without realizing that the article states that they are only listing first party games. It makes the poster look like an idiot.
Sintariot
Nooo, Nintendogs is beating Diamond and Pearl.
slickchris7777
The list is nintendo only. there are several million+ 3rd party titles already.
ajay42
@Dreadfish: MS counts Marvel:UA and Forza, as well as Sony counting Motorstorm...so yes Wii Sports counts
Seiven
Wii Play for a controller.
Benjo
@DigitalHero: At least its better than Microsoft and their shipping numbers.
@altgod: You're complaining about casual gamers... but then you bring up Halo 3... oh lawd! Pot meet kettle.
Leanid
@borntoflail: So you're saying Phantom Hourglass is shit?
notalkjustrock
Nice to see MP:3 sold over a million....
Interstella5555
IMO Metroid and galaxy are the only two worthwhile titles up there... ah who am I kidding Wii sports was a gathering point in my household for months.
borntoflail
@altgod:
You do realise that wiiplay came with a wiimote?
I bought wiiplay because it only cost £2 extra from the normal control. I'd like to think wiiplay was worth those £2.
nya-chama
Glad to see a Metroid Prime title finally sell well.
TheBrain
@altgod: hahaha. I'm sorry, but I just have to laugh at how outraged you sound.
SolFalling
Oh Metroid Prime 3... If only you were called Halo so people would pay attention and realize how awesome you are.
Padriac
@altgod: uhhhh, the same as Wii Sports in what way?
Plus, there was a controller involved, so that can skew data a bit as well.
phinehas
Just for Ninty products. No More heroes would get tro that mark in a few months.
KM91
Wow, despite being essentially the same thing as Wii Sports, Wii Play still managed to outsell Halo 3. Casual gamers are retards.
altgod
@geoffcbassett:
Well, not all that goes into Nintendo's pocket. Retailers get some, as do the shipping company(s), and the factory where it's manufactured, and of course all the designers and programmers have to be paid, plus any advertising fees.
EmeraldDragon
Good to see MP3 there, considering its still not out in Japan yet.
Torusan
@Hiltz: Are you talking about MP3: Corruption? The Wii game? Did you know that it hasn't even been released in Japan yet?
Some would say the GAME is giving JAPAN the cold shoulder.
phinehas
...I still have trouble beleiving so many kotaku reasdrs dont grasp that wii sports is NOT bundled withteh wii in japan.
On another note nice to see galaxy up there so high, and also nice to see corruption and paper mario posting solid numbers.
Neon
It would be interesting if they broke those Wii Sports numbers down since they are obviously including bundle numbers. Similarly, can you even buy Wii Play without the Wiimote?
TrettOff
None of my favourite DS games are on that list. Me are saddness.
@DigitalHero:
At 17 million copies I'd say it almost definitely includes pack ins.
Demaar
@youngmike99: It's Nintendo, more specifically Mario/Metroid/Zelda.
Less specifically, it's like asking if we can expect sequels to Final Fantasy, Need For Speed, and Mega Man.
doesnotequal
@Truepatriot: México had the Wii Sports bundle as well...
That's a whole lotta love for Nintendo.
Ruglia
I wonder if the WiiSports total is without the U.S. pack-in. Wait, this is Nintendo we are talking about...
DigitalHero
I'm so tired of hearing about sales. Just show me how good you're doing with the games themselves. :<
seestoff
Interesting. It seems like Legend of Zelda:Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy will surpass Wind Waker and Mario Sunshine's lifetime sales if they haven't already. I'm happy to see that Metroid Prime 3 has reached the 1 million mark despite Japan giving the game the cold shoulder.
It's only going to get better for Nintendo thanks to another killer-app title on the way named Brawl.
Hiltz
@phinehas: Chippy!
bangbangblah
So we can expect sequels to ALL of these games?
youngmike99
@carpediemdp:
Still, I think Wii Sport should not be inluded on this list, since it wasn't sold separately from the Wii.
yes it was outside of the us.
Truepatriot
@carpediemdp: but these are worldwide numbers, and in Japan (not sure about Europe) it was (sold separately). Now, we could argue about the INFLATEDness of the number, but it's definitely at least a million seller in Japan, meaning it SHOULD be a part of this list.
phinehas
For all the people saying "Wii Sports isn't a game!":
It wasn't bundled in everywhere. Stop being nation-centric elitists.
Kirbytheslayer: Grammar Communist. Not a Nazi
Sorry, that should say was NOT bundled with anything or have multiple SKUs.
goldarsun
@Blind_Evil: @Superstar90 lieks mudkipz: well, thank you for the info. I actually didn't know it was one of the best-selling movies on blu ray. Still, I think Wii Sport should not be inluded on this list, since it wasn't sold separately from the Wii.
carpediemdp
New Super Mario Bros. is probably the craziest number on there. More than 13 million sold, and unlike the games that sold more, it was bundled with anything or have multiple SKUs.
goldarsun
@phinehas: I concur. 3rd parties didn't expect the wii to do as well as it did. Red steel was under produced and thus a bad game, and with rayman being one of the few good 3rd party titles, its no wonder nobody buys 3rd party games. Give it time, and amazing 3rd party titles will come to the wii; thanks, in part, to the ds, for being so good.
San
Already the anti-Nintendo trolls begin to bash its 3rd party support despite the fact that 3rd party games are clearly excluded from this list. You guys are great, really.
swirldude
@carpediemdp: Well I'm guessing the relatively low sales of the PS3 by comparison in December was due to the fact people found an utter-shit of a movie packed in with their shinny system and returned it.
@Gunhaver: You're absolutely right! People just paid $50 extra when they found out their Wiis came with a free game.
okenny :)
@carpediemdp:
It is one of the best selling blu-ray movies.
Anyways, Wii sports still would have been 1st (or second) if they didn't bundle it in. It polluted all the TV stations for so long before and after launch.
Superstar90 lieks mudkipz
@Gunhaver: Why not? It's sold well over a million in Japan where it's not bundled with the console at all...
Or am I just misunderstanding your comment?
phinehas
Wii Fit is going to take over the world. Every talk show in America is going to have a field day with this thing. I wish Prime 3 had better numbers though, the guys at Retro did a really awesome job with it.
thischarmingman
@carpediemdp: Spiderman 3 IS one of the best selling blu-ray movies...
Blind_Evil
Wii=49990000 x $50= $2499500000
DS=87869000 x $40= $3514760000
Total=$6,014,260,000
O_o
geoffcbassett
Yah, these are only first party numbers.
@Truepatriot: It's already not true, but most people won't look past the biggies to see the gems that are popping up (and have been there since the 64 days).
I want more 3rd party games, too, and won't blind myself that Nintendo certainly does well at selling their own games on their own system - but 3rd parties, imo, are equally to blame, as they continue to put their best stuff elsewhere and, aside from a few astounding counterexamples, throw their shovelware onto the console. In other words, 3rd parties are shoveling the coal onto the "no good 3rd party games" fire.
Nintendo can help (probably more than they are), but I doubt they can go to each company and make them make their best games for the Wii.
phinehas
@okenny :): This is a list of Nintendo published WW million sellers. It is not a list for EA or Ubisoft or whoever else. It's Nintendo's list of their games. If you want to see how well another publisher's game did you will have to ask that publisher!
DarkNight_DS
Wii Sports does NOT count as a sold game.
Gunhaver
i dont understand why is wii sports included on the list,since it's being included with the wii. Then one of the best selling blu-ray movies should be spiderman 3, since it was bundled with the 40Gb PS3....
carpediemdp
@McWhertor: Thank you sir
@Blind_Evil: I'm a hater. Not the DS though. I'll stop hating the Wii when I finally find one (those bastards!).
okenny :)
@Nascar: Umm no. The last Japanese sales numbers show the same number for Wii Fit, so I'm pretty sure those are sales numbers.
reddevil
Jesus Christ.
Too many zeros.
Terrosaur the 56killa(SteamID, C4L 56KILLA is XBL)
They've made it so that DVDs print money too.
suya123
@McWhertor:
ah thanks for clearing that up.
Truepatriot
My god! I seriously wonder how many billions (USD) are tied up in those numbers *drools*
You think Nintendo will hire me to take over Iwata's job a few years from now. I can learn to love them for money :) I'm even ordering the MoH o_O
okenny :)
@Nascar: how do you know?
lot of haters in here
Blind_Evil
By the way, I've updated the post to prevent confusion with the two above responses spelled out more clearly.
McWhertor
This is worldwide guys, not just Japanese. Anyway, Nintendo generally makes the best games. It's not that the 3rd party games on their consoles suck (even though that is partially true for the Wii right now), it's just that Nintendo games are absolutely fantastic. And I would honestly rather have a handful of Nintendo games than a bunch of any other companies. Nintendo just makes my favorite games.
Metroid Prime 3 should have sold a lot more though. Such a fantastic game.
rbelmont000
@okenny :): Since this is from a Nintendo financial report, I'm assuming it's first party only.
@Dreadfish: It's sold separately in Japan, but Nintendo doesn't distinguish between the two packages. Hardware bundles are included.
McWhertor
These are shipped numbers not sold.
Nascar
@reddevil: Thanks... that list seemed lean. So this is just first party. I wanted to run to VGChartz but I just don't know what to make of them.
okenny :)
@Green-clad Gamer Dude: will do when it changes =)
Truepatriot
You babies and your damn 3rd party games, who the fuck care, all i care is that i get fun games, i don't give a rat's ass if nintendo made them or cute little duck company did :-S
But i think this list is just for Nintendo products ;o)
valhum
@Teggles: Careful there or well will all be sitting around he Kotaku camp fire reminiscing about how the we had so much potential two years from now. There is no platform without 3rd party support and regardless of this current trend, Reganomics never worked and I don't think video games will change that.
okenny :)
@Truepatriot: That's such a tired and idiotic saying. Geez, get something new...
Green-clad Gamer Dude
Forget about logic, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will outsell Wii Sports. :)
ultimatepancakesensation
This list does not count 3rd party games. If it did, Mario and Sonic I believe would top a million world-wide.
freshv8
@Dreadfish:
in japan wii sports is sold separately.i think the us is the only country with wii sports packed in.
doesnt this just continue to prove what has been known since the 64?nintendo systems only play nintendo games.
Truepatriot
Not one 3rd party hit the million mark ? if true that tells us all we need to know about future 3rd party support on the Wii.
And why the Wii can never be a primary console.
axel000
@okenny :): Eh? 3rd Party numbers are not included...though the 3rd Party million seller list for the Wii wouldn't be that long...Guitar Hero III, Red Steel, Rayman Raving Rabbids, RE 4. Not too shabby.
reddevil
How the fuck did wii sports get 17 mil. Is it really a sell when its included with the wii in the states. i guess so. Thats a lot of millions there.
Shindokie (PSN and XBL)
@MCWHERTOR:
I have to ask... does this list take 3rd parties into account or is this a 1st party centric list?
okenny :)
3rd parties? Who needs 'em?! As long as Nintendo keeps churning out timeless classics such as Link's Crossbow Training, the Wii will remain victorious!
Teggles
Very impressive numbers. Wii Fit will be huge around the world too...those are just Japanese numbers.
reddevil
Wow, that's pretty impressive for Metroid Prime 3 to have sold a million when it costs $64 in Japan.
Green-clad Gamer Dude
So will these games be cheaper then? That'd be cool because that list contains pretty much every must-have game on the Wii so far.
dowingba
Wii Sports counts? Is it technically a sold title?
Dreadfish
Woooo hooo! Viva La 3rd Parties!!!
okenny :)
