Only At CES: Wii Nunchuk Speakers "On Play"
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 8:20 AM on January 11, 2008
The South Hall of CES is loaded with traditionally non-gaming companies showcasing their wares with popular games. If you want to get in a few free sessions of Guitar Hero III, Halo 3 or Wii Sports, this is the place to be. If you're looking for a speaker that's shaped like a Wii nunchuk, it's also the place to be. Fenda Tech's home theater offering may have a very specific appeal with it's Wii inspired speakers and subwoofer, but it actually sounds pretty good for a novelty product. Fenda says the 2.1 system "intensifies your gaming with a soundfield that surrounds you," so if that's sounds like your bag, watch for the $US 50-ish system to launch later this year.

God, that's a horrendous design. Who wants their Wii on the floor, or their subwoofer in the air? More LED lights does not equal a good product. Yech.

They should release a speaker system based on the original Xbox. Too bad they'd have to be car speakers ^^

@djpaec: @The Wreckard: Yeah Vibration was more my worry, magnets aren't too much of a problem for most modern electronics
@Snappywave: Well, if you didn't sit 4 feet away from it, chain-smoking Lucky Strikes, you wouldn't have that problem!
:P

They had to tape four Gamecubes together to make it, right? :)
Seriously, I can't justify $50.00 for a 2.1 system when you can get a, admittedly crummy but still better, 5.1 home theater in a box for ~$200.00.
I can't dedicate a speaker system to one single device, even if it is dead sexy. Which this is not.

I think the speakers woulda looked better without the imitation analog stick.

@DimensionWarped:
Given that it's only $50, I doubt the magnet is actually that big. Besides, assuming it's not shielded, how would magnets harm the Wii anyway? I'd be more worried about vibration.

those nun chuck-shaped speakers are atrocious.

That setup is plain retarded. They basically sat the Wii next to a big fucking magnet.

I'm still not sold that it won't harm the Wii's optical drive over time, being rattled continuously so close by. Nice nunchuk speakers though, I might be interested in those for $20 if they came separate from the sub. Better yet, Nintendo should license the design to JVC or BA and give me larger white nunchuk speakers that actually sound good enough to be used as satellites in a quality 5.1 setup.

Well, does the Wii itself sit inside it? Because if so, this might work for someone with a Wii game that only offers, say, MONO sound.

Cool I guess if you are trying to go for the Ikea look with you apartment furniture...this would actually match nicely with some of the curves.

I'm sure $50 shaped like a Wii computer speakers will really envelope people with a soundfield.

That looks horrible. I had something or speaker per se that looked like that but it glowed Blue LED lights. It was nasty. I wonder how they sound because it doesn't look good. Plus GH3 can't take advantage with its Mono sound har har.

@K-Squad! (Badass Edition): Go ahead, my GF left her iBook sitting on a whole tray of such magnets overnight last week and had no problems. Of course, you said a PC, not a Mac, so NM.
OH SNAP!
Sorry, I couldn't resist ;)

@Ilchymis: I have to agree. Not only that but I'm not sure why someone would want to lay a Wii right next to a low frequency speaker. I mean does anyone remember what happened to the chic who sat on the subwoofer in Private Parts?
Not saying it will give your Wii a touchless orgasm, but I cannot imagine the low freq being good for the overall function of the disk drive.

I thought my Wii was fun, but that thing is huge. Who's Wii is that? I want to play with it. It's bigger than my Wii.

It's cute that it matches the Wii buuuut ... a little too big to fit in my place. I'm doing just fine with my TV speakers.
