Pirates of the Burning Sea Goes Live
I have a confession to make: Nowadays I find it heard to retain interest in a massively multplayer online game for more than an hour or so. They just bore the crap out of me. They're all so transparent, so same, the sameness, I think is what really kills the experience for me.
So the only reason I started checking out Pirates of the Burning Sea was because I'm reviewing it for Variety. What I've found so far is a game, that while still suffering under the yoke of World of Warcraft, manages to introduce at least a few unique elements to the thread-worn mechanic found in nearly all MMOs. I speak of the ship-to-ship warfare which I find very reminiscent of the Ancient Art of War at Sea a game I simply loved.
Ship-to-Ship combat isn't the entire game, for most people at least, but cutting through the water, minding the wind direction and cannon reload times, all in real time mind you, is a pure joy and makes me want to play through the rest of the game, no matter how familiar it might be, just to upgrade the ship to something improbable and monstrous. I'm told, I shit you not, that you can have battles between entire flotillas of these amazing Tall Ships too, up to 25 a side. I haven't experience that yet, but I may actually stick around long enough to try.
I'm not 100 percent sure, yet, if I'd pay the full $US 15 a month to play the game, but you can figure that out yourself now that it has gone live, effective today.

YO HO HO! PIRATES OF THE BURNING SEA SETS SAIL TODAY
SAN DIEGO, CA - Jan. 22, 2008 - Grab your parrot, raise the gang plank and ready the cannons with Pirates of the Burning Sea™ (PotBS), the hotly anticipated online PC game where players can clash on land and sea. This new title from Sony Online Entertainment LLC's (SOE) Platform Publishing label, and Flying Lab Software LLC (FLS), is available today at participating retail outlets worldwide and as a digital download through www.station.com and www.direct2drive.com for a suggested retail price of US$49.99, with a monthly subscription fee of US$14.99 plus applicable taxes.
"After years of hard work by our top-notch crew, we are thrilled to announce players can now conquer the virtual Caribbean, circa 1720, in Pirates of the Burning Sea," said Russell Williams, CEO of Flying Lab Software in Seattle. "Working together with SOE's Platform Publishing, we are able to launch this game simultaneously in the U.S. and Europe and release localized versions in English, French, Spanish and German, allowing players from all over to captain a ship in this world full of swashbuckling and high-seas adventure."
Players start by joining the French, Spanish, English or Pirate nations as a naval officer, freetrader, privateer or pirate. At sea, players can blow enemy ships out of the water. On land, players can engage in a world of action and peril rife with sword fights. A unique economy lets players become captains of industry, running mines, lumber mills, shipyards and other large-scale operations. Players produce all the various goods needed to supply others with the raw materials to conquer the Caribbean, one port at a time. A player-generated content system lets gamers create their own sail and flag designs and even model their own ships.
Set in the New World circa 1720, PotBS recreates a dramatic time of conflict and riches with action for every play style, from epic ship combat to building an empire. With more than one thousand missions per nation, dozens of ports to explore, and the entire Caribbean as their domain, players will find an online experience like no other.
Pirates of the Burning Sea game features:
• Join one of four nations (Pirate, English, French, or Spanish)
• Every player is the captain of their very own ship in massive naval battles
• Duel other players to control more than 80 conquerable ports in the Caribbean
• Explore the world and make a name for yourself with more than 1,000 missions per nation
• Economy driven by players, who manufacture and sell all ships and equipment found in the game
• Take command of more than 50 historical ships
• Design your own flags and sails
• Build your very own or customize any of the ships in-game to your liking
• Choose from three different combat styles - deadly and formal Fencing, flashy, dual-wielding Florentine or rowdy and treacherous Dirty Fighting
• Participate in epic PvP sea battles with up to 25 players per side

@scarshapedstar:
Are you trying to claim that there's no PVP in EVE...?
After taking part in a few alliance battles involving 300+ ships (not that it was smooth and fluent or anything with that many ships around) I fail to see your point...
Northernsky
Yohoho Puzzle Pirates was still the first and possibly most unique MMO I've played, if only because everything you did in the game was done via puzzles. Sailing? Dr. Mario. Swordfighting? Super Puzzle Fighters. etc.
Dracil
"But EvE is CLEARLY a better game then this."
Maybe if you despise pvp...
scarshapedstar
Played it. Reminded me of Pirates! and all that, so no, I won't be going live with this... Especially when I can just play this offline for no fee with the original game of Pirates! ;).
nimagraven
I noticed the picture before I started reading and just thought that that was part of the game (that you could upload your own avatar and that Crecente chose the most piratey thing he had).
I don't know if I'll play this game. I like some of the ideas but I would like it to be more like Puzzle pirates were most serve as crew but you can buy your own ship if you save up the money.
Spiderbait
mannn... this game sounds cool, but everyone who comments sound really unimpressed with this game.
...i guess i wouldn't buy it anyways, my computer isn't made for gaming.
but i do think its a cool idea! ship-to-ship combat does seem really cool.. it would be even cooler if about 15-to-30 people had to work together on each ship! well.. at least in theory.

You like this because your a pirate!!!

I'll see ye on the seas :)

I'm interested in trying this game but I won't commit $60 to something without first trying it out. It isn't like a Halo game or Half-Life where you sort of know what it will be like since you played the previous ones. This is a new MMO so there is a large leap of faith you must take just to try it out since they don't offer a free trial. I'll wait and see if they offer a trail. If not I'll be avoiding this one.
Munkey_Funk
Is there no 14 day trial? Don't they know thats how you get customers? You give them a taste for free, and only once they become addicted do you mention the price.
Xerxes_8933A
I'll wait till the free trial.

@jacksinn: I've been having a bad commenting year too :( The double words happen when you are momentarily distracted and you unconsciously retype the last word you typed but it usually only happens with small words for me. This isn't your fault though... the idea of hot gonorrhea pudding would distract anyone :(
okenny :)
Congrats to the dev's. Great work guys!.

Crecente in the Captain's Quaters?!
*abandons ship*
ViolenceMan
I just reread my comment. I swear I'm not typically that incoherent or lame. Well, incoherent.
jacksinn
Don't read me, I'm off topic.
I read 'Pirates of the Burning Burning Pea' and associated a homophone. I'm sorry I even shared that. My head hurts and I have a cold. More Benadryl, please.
I'm assuming Crecente is in the brig there.
jacksinn
I really love this game. The ship combat is engaging, which is nice, but the economy is what really pulls me in. I love how intricate and connected the whole game experience is. The PvP is meaningful, because it effects the economy in many different ways, and in return, the economy fuels the PvP conflict.
Yamen
There's a screvy dog on the port side R?
okenny :)
The ship to ship combat in this game was very reminiscent of Eve, except Eve has a much richer and deeper combat system with some amazing mechanics...and it's in 3D space. :)
But Pirates has one up on Eve, you can get out of your ship...

@Touy:
I see it now! Hahahaha!
dead_red_eyes
AHAHAHA. Best picture ever. Took me a minute.
Touy
Wait a second, they're CHARGING for this game now? Heh. And I thought beta was a rip-off...
Bissrok
Finally, an endorsement couched in terms I can *understand*. I will actually try it now.
deathbunny
@Misquito:
Well it's been officially released so I'd say you're good to go.
dead_red_eyes
Geeeeeyaaarrrrr
I love to plunder the booty!
*not the game, dont care for it*
EnigmaNemesis
If I were playing the game, I'd totally join your crew Capt. Crecente.
Digitalguardian 3: Return of the Jedi King's Machine at World's End
I played in the beta and the game reminded me of sid mir pirates gone mmo.
Delusions
Is the NDA up so i can talk about how boring this game was to me?
Misquito
It's like where's Waldo but with a pirate. A pirate named Crecente.
Aflack: Likes slushies
I played beta since the stress test back around early December. It starts out as a fun game, since the ship combat is fun, but once you're past that it just feels...empty. Grab a quest, do it, level up, pvp. I've got nothing against pvp but grinding the same mission (go out here, and sink this ship, or capture this ship, or sometimes go in on foot and fight some guys) just to do pvp just...sounds boring.
Jomo7
Ahaahaha i was wondering what that bit about photoshoppery in that image was, and i just scrolled back up to look at it and i noticed it :)
Cirrus
@Kaljin: I doubt they will ever make it, or make it good. But EvE is CLEARLY a better game then this. EvE is very good. But after playing for 2 years I quit. But, I can say that it is pointless to start EvE Online today, if you don't got 15mill+ SP atleast focused into something then don't play it.
So if someone would ask me of what game to pick, I say pick EvE if you can ebay your character, if not screw it and start something new like this. But I think this game sux, open beta was poor, game is weak, better things are coming.
Atleast the made a deal with SOE, in time before the fail.
Irenicus-the one and only
@thegreatpablo:
Even then, EVE is coming out with a FREE EXPANSION that allows you to walk outside the ship, free with your own emotes and such.
Kaljin
It's a shame that almost any MMO eventually becomes an endless grindfest, but you can't make a game that people will be willing to play for a lengthy time without making sacrifices somewhere. Most of the time the MMO answer to this is to replace content with grinding; if they didn't do this, they'd run out of time and resources before the game even got released.
That's why it'll be insanely hard for anyone to dethrone WoW; they just have too much of a head start on content. Simply put, you can't beat WoW at its own game, I'm doubting that ship combat and a pirate setting can push this title over that threshold.
For the time being, I'll be getting my pirate on with Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates. :)
UltimatePancakeSensation
"The ship to ship combat in this game was very reminiscent of Eve, except Eve has a much richer and deeper combat system with some amazing mechanics..."
Uh... I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there, for the simple reason that in Eve you pretty much turn your mods on and wait. Sometimes you hit orbit, I guess. Ooh, and there's damage types, so for example in some situations you might want to use EMP cruise missiles, whereas in other situations you might want to use... hrm... actually, never mind.
I'll take demasting over EW any day of the week.
scarshapedstar
YARR.
Etc.
This was vaguely interesting to me, but without a trial I'm not donning my eyepatch.

@dead_red_eyes: sneaky sneaky :P
geoffcbassett
I beta bored the everloving crap out of me, this is even more monotonous than the average mmo in my opinion.
alb1221
Dude the acronym isn't good...PoTBS?...seriously? I really wouldnt want my game to be subjected to being called a crock of.ehh..feces...
