PS3 Delay Syndrome Hits Frontlines: Fuels of War
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:11 PM on January 22, 2008
The latest "Of War" shoot-fest is going to sit out a PlayStation 3 version for a bit longer, as THQ's Frontlines will be hitting the Xbox 360 and PC only in February. The PS3 version of Frontlines: Fuels of War, rumoured to have been cancelled when retailers dropped that version from upcoming software listings. Rumours of the nixing made their way to developer Kaos Studios' forums, with mods and admins not exactly denying the talk.
It's still on, says Firing Squad, by way of the publisher. It's just going to show up "later in 2008." Those of you thinking "Frontlines who of what, again?" are assuredly relieved. You may sigh satisfactorily... now.

@bluesquareapple: It had to do with the aim assist. For some reason they did not add any type of passive aim assist for the console and so the aiming felt very sluggish or way too fast. It is similar to how using a mouse without 'click-to' activated seems a little awkward. Other than that the RC bomb car controlled horribly, although they were going to fix this issue.
Not sure how this game will turn out, but after playing the demo that they released I doubt they made anyone consider it as a CoD4 alternative. Great game with a lot of possibility though; it just lacks the proper polish.

My guess is that this will start happening to strategy games much more these days due to the PS3's single main processor design: Strategy games are the most processor intensive games on the market as far as A.I. go and the PS3 doesn't have the chops. Trun-based stuff will work just fine but the power required for RTSs just isn't there to run todays sims. It's a shamed too because the kind of battle field the CELL could run transformations on would be insane. The game would just perform like a handsome retard.

@Witzbold: Yay! I thought I was the only person that enjoyed the demo ... I thought it was fun, and I liked the relevance of the story, as well. Also, that helicopter was badass! There was a guy up on a turrent owning me, and I just flew it around the back of the building, up the tower, and capped him in the butt. It was surprisingly rewarding.

I dug the demo. Liked the fact that you could pilot the drones and get the jump on the bad guys. I had some issues with controlling tanks but otherwise thought it was a solid game. Does it have online co-op or just multiplayer?

I was in the multiplayer beta on PC a few months back. It was fine, but not many people were playing it.
Playing the console demos, I really can't describe what was wrong with the controls. There was something funky with the movements and the aiming was far from smooth.
I'm considering buying the PC version depending on reviews, but nothing can sway me from my stance on not purchasing a console version.

Why the fuck is this a fileplanet only beta? Can someone familiar with them tell me what they offer? Some kind of beta-key/bug tracking system?
Because nowadays, given bittorrent and broadband distribution systems, bandwidth is irrelevant.

@EnigmaNemesis: Did you play the PC beta? The online, despite buggy in the beta, could be alot of fun to play, despite how average the single player demo on 360 was.
Alot of the "gadgets" are alot of fun too, it made it worth playing. I will wait for reviews and what some people say before I write the game off...

I'm wondering how this game will shape up online. The only problem with it is that I already have enough online shooters as it is and I don't see myself needing another. It doesn't look like it will be better than CoD4 or Halo 3 so I'm not feeling it.
That said, it is too bad that these games keep getting delayed for the PS3 but it is better for it to come late to the PS3 rather than come full of glitches.

Really? I couldn't get into it when I tried the demo. The controls felt very generic. Will have to give it a second look, but maybe I am just tired of all these "war" games, unless they are gems like CoD4 and such.
I even took Turok and Blacksite off my GF list after playing demos. Sure they looked good, but for shooters now with me, they have to be "really" good I guess for me to care.

@Fadakar: Actually the demo was quite amusing, the little remote control units were great. Though the tank was a bit of a bitch to maneuver.
I can see it being a rather fun game with an online mode.
I do hope that THQ fixes up the frame rate a bit though, since it seems to skip at times. :x

@Mpalm.:
Yeah, I was hoping they at least address concerns from the earlier demos of the game. The worst part of the demo for me was when a few dinosaurs started patrolling with enemy troopers. They're supposed to attack all humans they encounter. I have no idea how the script did that unless a scan / idle state transition failed somehow. It was kind of funny, but it was mostly sad.

The only good part of Turok is the knife... the rest of it seemed like a cheap FPS with nothing interesting working for it. The arrows weren't explosive, so i didn't bother with the bow much. I liked the original Turok more, now that was a great game.

@Lou3000: ya would be nice to set up barricades and stuff also to prevent movement from a certian direction.
A great but old game that had awesome mods was Starseige Tribes. Great stuff was the engineer class that could set up forcefields and other objects. Forgot which mod that was. Really helped add more strategy to the game.
Also I miss games having landmines and such.

Anyone else play the Turok demo? The knife was ok, but lack of third person camera really hurts and the only other weapon worth using is the bow. Also what's up with all the respawning enemies? Takes all the thinking out of it if you have to just run into fire to stop them respawning.

@Witzbold: Yes that would be brilliant. Like, having to keep a zone covered while a mobile HQ is established or laying a bridge. But really more than anything, I don't want there to be such a linear approach. Why can't I flank my enemy not just in a single arena, but on a more global sense. Or set up a Maginot line, only to fail.

@SG79: LOL... make sure that developers are reading the same thing you are reading as well because this IS a known challenge in developing for the PS3. MS has never come out and said anything about the PS3's AI for the record. I hope I'm wrong and a flood of RTS games make their way to the PS3 with better AI than anything else out there but it'll take more than your disagreement to convince me about that. Let's just wait and see.

Eh. I actually didn't think the demo was terrible, but just so generic. Decent graphics, fun little unmanned vehicles, and a decent setting. However, the controls were a little wonky (especially in the tank) and guns didn't feel very realistic, but more than anything, I didn't think they really delivered on the game idea. The original point was that you would take different strategic points to advance, but it is still just a linear game. I would like a more open feel such as an RTS/FPS mix with a number of different ways to win. You don't have to take EVERY strategic point, but you choose how you want to attack to achieve the objective.

Why spend 60 bucks on this when COD4 covers the same ground in a much better way.
And is anyone else getting sick of these desert settings for these war games? I'm psyched for MGS4, but Snake looks like he's in a COD4 map. I understand that most modern combat is in the desert now, but I think the lush vistas of Farcry lend better to HD gaming. (listen up Killzone 2 developers)

I liked the "timeliness" of the back-story of FoW, but once I got into the game it was one of the quickest Demo deletes (aside from the new Turok) I have ever done.
Even though it is a Demo, and I can see where it might be better co-op, it was just more of the same. anyhow I am lucky, I have both systems. The better news is I have choice, I choose never to play this game again.
