PSP Getting Official Keyboard In 2009
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:03 PM on January 8, 2008
Having grown used to tapping merrily away on my DS, I hate text-entry on a PSP. No doubt you hate text-entry on a PSP as well. Now, three years after the PSP first launched, Sony are coming around to the fact, and have pledged to do something about it. They've told GameSpot that they're hard at work on an official keyboard for the the PSP, which should be out sometime towards the middle of 2009. No comment on what it would look like (that one above's an abortive attempt by Logitech), but with the release so far off they've got plenty of time to sort that out.

The PSP will be quite old in mid 2009.. wont Sony have something else planned by then? Also the PSP's current text input would acutally be pretty good if it had word prediction.

Mid 2009? That's a while for such a simple thing. Even mobile keyboards are a pretty solidly fleshed out thing already. I mean a late release is better than a rushed one (RROD cough cough), but it still seems a long time to make a tiny keyboard.

a keyboard that I, as a PSP owner, can't see any use for.
Gee, I guess you didn't realize the PSP has a built-in web browser, didja? Were it actually comfortable to use, it'd be a great way to view websites and write emails on the go.
2009 is ridiculously far off though...

I use my DS's touchscreen for IRC on the go(London has such awesome wifi coverage, I have a free "Cloud" account from my uni, yay~).
It works surprising good, hopefully this keyboard will work just as good, can't see how though...

But how would you comfortably attatch and use a psp keyboard? Hell, I couldn't even figure out what to do with the xbox 360 keyboard.

@Cruithne: Well, being that the device seems to be evolving with the camera, microphone, and GPS addons along with its WiFi ability with web and RSS apps, a keyboard would help with its web features. I for one have been wanting a keyboard for the damn thing for a long time now, though by the time mid-2009 hits, I think the PSP-2k9 will be out with a sliding keyboard already built into it anyway.

I think this news should be filed under "meh"
So what?
And how the fuck does it take so long to develop a keyboard?, a keyboard that I, as a PSP owner, can't see any use for.
What they really ought to be doing is developing voice recognition software as an input device, then they'd have some news to report.

By the way, not wireless but a decent gadget for 360 if anyone is looking for M&K.

It'll be interesting to see the final product is equipped together.

@ssjmichael: Because CES hasn't been about the video games in years. Sony and MS have other reasons for being/wasting money at CES. Nintendo however just does video games, so CES means completely nothing at all to them.

Also in reference to this particular news, would it be possible for 3rd party acessory makers to make a portable keyboard for the PSP? Mid-2009 seems ludicrous to me. I just got a PSP, I've used it only like 3 times, but typing was a bitch (I'm sure it'll get easier but still!).

@Plunkett:
Why shouldn't it though? Being one of the biggest electronics/gadget related conventions a year, shoudln't they use it as a platform to announce upcoming products or games for the Wii? If Sony can do that, and Microsoft could do it, why not Nintendo? I imagine they'd get a lot more press than something like E for All.

Sony is owning CES so far compared to MS and Nintendo. Like how many great announcements have their been in the last 24 hours for the PSP/PS3?
I just have to wonder if all these positives for the PSP/PS3 will translate into sales.

My goodness, they took their sweet time to get onto this one. I remember the pre-launch photos of the PSP with keyboards and I really had my hopes up for the capabilities of the system with said device. Now I had to wait years for it and it probably won't even work for my phat psp :( Bunch of fsckers.

Above pic was a concept by Logic 3 not Logitech; but history regardless... Sony'll probably sew the keyboard on a case or something if I'm going to wait for another year.

@Cruithne: I think the 2009 date is a little far off and they're going to lose a lot of potential for the device by holding off that long, but there are considerations that need to be added to the entire equation. Ergonomic designs, portability, pricing, manufacturing, durability issues... I mean the PSP's pretty wide already, and having something on the bottom would have the PSP's weight (I'm thinking about the PSP-2000) on top would put a lot of stress on the keyboard itself); something for desk or surface use would be pretty good, but loses some portability or on-the-go action. The only thing I can think of and actually try visualize would be a keyboard that splits out onto the left and right sides of the PSP, as mentioned in my previous comment.

You can use an IR keyboard and some very easily installed homebrew to have a keyboard for your PSP. It works actually pretty well for the web. I don't have all the details on this laptop, but there was a targus IR keyboard that worked great. I think it was like $20 or $30 on amazon. Anyways, maybe I'll find the proper documentation and links to share later on.
But this is good news though. Wonder what it'll be like. I mean for the PS3, the thumbpad keyboard from madcatz was fine, but the PSP's a little different... maybe a slide out from the bottom side to the sides could work out (so half the keyboard slides out on the left side, the other on the right). I mean, I can't imagine a keyboard that slides out on the bottom for this thing.

They couldn't just add in predictive text input like the PSP already does with website prefixes (i.e. www, .com)? And instead we'll have still just have to type it out? Sheesh.

Why would Sony replace PSP next year (which is 2009)? They aren't going to. PSP has years left in it. This isn't something you have to have anyway.

@Brian Ashcraft: Wow this is the second thread I've noticed today where you bit down on some troll meat there!
You feelin ok?
To be fair i've noticed my posts being a bit grumpier of late as well.
I could see a touch screen version of the psp by 2009. It would be fully backwards compatible but have that feature for games and key entry. The cost of touchscreen(even multi touch) will be fairly low by then.
A keyboard peripheral seems like it would add too much bulk. But I have yet to see their design if it's a thin clean protective shell, it might work.
For web browsing i'd almost prefer to just to upload a selection of bookmarks as it's just a pain to type.
I would love a simple voice recognition typer, but I think that's outside of possibilities.

what T fuck? 2009? Isn't this a little late? I think the PSP has other problems anyway. They need to upgrade the hardware in some manner before they deliver a typing system that's useful.

My hopes would be on one of those foldable keyboards as they are incredibly thin AND you can roll them up/fold them as necessary. They ain't cheap but considering the current policy of Sony, they might charge 30-40 $ for it without a heavy sales impact.

of courset he psp is relevant now, there are some good games for the psp out, but just like with the ps3, believe it or not, its got some GREAT and useful non-gaming functions.
are you telling me you don't think its cool to have a web-browser or other functions for your gaming systems? i don't see why everything needs to be gaming-only.
