PSP GPS Peripheral Coming to North America?
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 4:00 PM on January 7, 2008
That Japan only GPS add-on for the PSP doesn't look so Japan only anymore. Sony's CES page lists the GPS system, leading most to believe the peripheral, already out in Japan, will get a Western release. Here's how the Sony site describes it:
Explore the world with GPS on your PSP. Utlising the GPS peripheral and the latest mapping software on UMD, your PSP will provide 2D/3D locations, driving directions, POI's, and even downloadable city guides. With an easy search feature and customisable settings, GPS on PSP is the easiest way to navigate new areas and cities.Nice that Sony seems to be bringing its Japan only stuff to everyone else. Who's interested in picking this up?

Would be nice if they had a good dashboard mount for the PSP that dosn't make it look completely wrong. However, apart from the Touch, theres not much else I would want to carry around with me. PSP is not used too often any more on trips, so don't know if I would find it useful. Maybe if the price was right... We shall see...

I too picked up one of these when I was in Japan. It had some minor issues with locating satellites when I was in Tokyo, but worked fine outside the city.
I've been waiting for them to release the US UMD so I could use it again.

If you already own a PSP, that seems a reasonable price for a GPS.

Don't see it as too useful - it won't replace the GPS in the car, and I would not want to walk around in the woods with it. Maybe a couple of years ago when dedicated GPS was a lot pricier.

I spent a few weeks in Yokohama (installing an exhibit at the NYK shipping museum), and noticed that most of the smaller streets didn't seem to even have names. I imagine that'd certainly be an issue. o.O

Cept the 40 gig PS3. They may have molested and fondled it a little.

I have GPS functionality already, but only on a laptop. It works, but it's way too cumbersome for "every day" use.
With remote play, the PSP has been looking more and more attractive of late. If they released this in Australia (along with the skype functionality), I'd probably be buying my first hand-held.

I made a custom car cradle for my PSP a long while back. It served as my car mp3/movie player... GPS would have sweetened the deal, but I decided to sell my whole PSP collection to help fund a PS3. I may just have to pic up another one. No complaints from me. But please, Sony - Make it happen!

This should have come out long ago. The PSP has from the very start tried to be a jack of all trades, so the dragging of the feet when it comes to stuff like this is something I'll never understand. They already know the PSP will never get close to matching the DS install base so those of us with both clearly bought the PSP more for all the stuff it can do would like stuff like this.
A pity if it's limited like Wizbold said though.

Yeah, I'm totally interested in buying one of these, despite living on Oahu where GPS just isn't as useful. I was planning to upgrade the internals of my '07 GX470 with a 9 inch touch screen interface that would be using GPS, but with the recent talk of Skype available to the new PSP-2000, I may just stick one of these guys in my car for GPS and use a PSP-2000 for Skype and as a webcame [www.gamesinfobase.com]

Too bad I got tired of waiting and purchased a Mio Digiwalker last year. The PSP had so much promise and now the only half-way decent new feature (Skype) is denied to those of us who invested in this thing when it first came out.
It was because of their PSP handling that I decided to wait on a PS3. I'm still waiting, too. The only game that was close to making me cross over was LA Noire and that's already been confirmed for the 360.
The video game market was Sony's to lose and they completely lost it.

As anti Sony as I am (not just gaming, but the company in general) the PSP has come a long way and the additional uses makes it a nice pocket toy. GPS would actually inspire me to pick one up.
But I'm sure that the moment I get one, Sony will decide to make a new product and discontinue support.
