Rare Responds To Gamer Demand For Furry-Filled Minigames
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:20 AM on January 5, 2008
Perfect Dark Zero and Viva Pinata developer Rare looks to be targeting Xbox Live Arcade for its next release, according to Xbox 360 Fanboy. The site reports today that it has details on the Microsoft-owned studio's The Fast & The Furriest, culled from presentation materials on the XBLA game. The sporty minigame collection would feature heavy Xbox Live Vision cam support, allowing for face (read: balls) mapping and EyeToy-style control. Classic Rare characters, like that clock from Diddy Kong Racing and dozens of fuzzy, googly-eyed woodland creatures, would feature prominently.
The presentation materials also point to a Wii-like motion control system that didn't make the final cut, which could lend more weight to Microsoft's interests in a simplified waggle scheme.

his name was tt, if i am not mistaken. loved DKR. it was far greater then mariokart 64. this is just my opinion, but it's the truth. anyway. with something like XBLA why not make something new and exciting instead of mini games?

Well at least now Rare isn't even pretending that they aspire to release anything other than actual crap for the 360.
(Can't comment on Viva Pinata you Furry Nazis, but I'm neither a 6 year-old nor a Furry, so there's no real reason for me to play it.)

Anywho, why aren't people getting all outraged and junk? I mean if this were announced on the Wii everyone would be bullshitting... *sigh* HYPOCRITES!

@HighlanderWolf:
With the next-gen power of the Xbox 360, RARE should be able to pull graphics that looks as good or even better than that Skunk in the video. People who enjoy DOAX have already experienced how awesome costumes look on their favorite fighter. I'm hoping that RARE puts a full character customization engine into the game so you can dress up the characters in outfits. I hope this game gets an AO or M+ so that people can have the kind of sexy outfits on their animals that they've always dreamed of.

This seems pretty interesting,if they leave it as "classic" rare characters, none of that Viva Pinata trite.Playing as the characters themselves would also be neat addition, but the whole thing will fail if Drumstick the chicken is not available, you here me rare,No Drumstick=Pure fail

@Erwin211: What about animals? I know if this game takes of with RARE, people will want to dress as these characters and have intercourse but there are those in the furry community who follow stricter orthodoxy who will find animals in real life that closest resemble the in-game character, lets say a sexy chipmunk as pictured above, and have tender sex with it. This act isn't offensive but people look down on furries because they think the animal didn't want it. That alone is judgmental but the judger also fails to understand the deep emotional connection that comes with a sexual relationship with an animal so they make judgments based off of superficials observation.
BTW... i find your use of "graphic" to be judgmental.

Rare is no longer the same company that it once was. The key players are gone, and with them, the greatness. They might be just behind Sega as the biggest developer fall from grace ever. It makes me a bit sad, but what are you going to do? Buy something else, theres a ton of good games out there.

@okenny :): It's not the idea of furries. I'm fine with people doing it, even with your graphic depiction, I just don't partake of this particular activity. It's just like how I support open homosexuality, but I still don't have sex with other men (as far as I know).

when are we, as gamers, going to admit to ourselves that Rare just is NOT a great videogame company? PD and Goldeneye were incredible in their time (although I personally tought PD was overrated), but Conker: Live and PDZ were just terrible (Conker single player was funny, but not particularly great).
Most of their games are overhyped and entirely forgettable.

@McWhertor: It's just that I don't think the average Kotaku reader is that interested in the cutesy fluff that Rare puts out. I'll start getting exciting when they revive the Killer Instinct franchise.

Before anyone gets all offended by the idea of furries, I'd like to point out: THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH TWO MEN DRESSED AS FURRY CREATURES INJECTING HOT SPERM INTO EACH OTHERS RECTUMS (...I'm on the boarder about feltching though)!! Stop judging people and keep it about the games.

Whatever happened to Rare? They used to make games everyone frothed over. Now, no one really cares. I mean, maybe Banjo-Threeie will be good, eventually. But when you talk about falls of great developers, Rare has to be at the top of the list.

Rare used to make good games. Just sayin', is all. Is there anyone left there who actually developed the classics that made Rare a company Bill Gates considered worth a 400 million dollar purchase price? They haven't delivered once since they went first-party with Microsoft (and their last game on a Nintendo console wasn't so hot either -- StarFox Meets Zelda on a Dinosaur, or whatever). What was the first game they put out for the Xbox? I'm thinking it was that awful Grabbed By a Ghoulie (was that its name?). They haven't really improved much since then.
I'm still waiting for Donkey Kong Racing to release on the GameCube. There was a screenshot on the back of my launch box when I bought it and I was actually looking forward to that game. I had a lot of fun with Diddy Kong Racing on the N64.
