Rumour: New Resident Evil Arcade Game on the Way?
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 3:00 AM on January 14, 2008
In an interview with Resident Evil Fan, an aptly named resident Evil fan site, Umbrella Chronicles voice actor Tara Platt revealed that she had done some additional RE voice work besides her role as the Red Queen in UC. According to Platt, she simultaneously recorded the voice of Jill Valentine for an as yet unnamed Resident Evil (Biohazard) arcade game that will be released in Japan. When questioned about the new title, Platt had this to say:
The Japanese-based Biohazard is a game console that is available as an arcade game in Japan. And I mean an actual arcade standing game.It was wonderful getting to play Jill. She's such a fierce character with determination and strength. Unfortunately, I don't have much more info than that, but I'm going to Japan this year, and you can bet I'll be on the look-out for the game in Arcades there!
While her answer does seem a bit confusing, it sounds like we might hear something about this new game in the coming months. If this does turn out to be true, perhaps we might see a showing at this year's TGS? Until then, I will cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Splendid! Alas, it'll never come stateside. If it did, then we'd have to erect a statue in someones honor.

I'm guessing this one is going to be another arcade RE in the style of Gun Survivor. Whether that's a good thing or not, well...

@Witzbold: Seriously?
I rather liked the Silent Hill Arcade Game actually.
I'd really like to have this on a console some day.
I'm a shameless fanboy though.
But yeah, 200 yen per play is a bit too much ;)

@SG79: I was talking about pewpew lazor gun games. Such as UC, TimeCrisis and the likes.
One of us must have misunderstood the original post.
Im a sucker for SilentHill-series. Love it to bits.
And RE4 is indeed a damn fine game.

@Krellie:
What genre are you referring to? Survival horror died with the release of RE4, since it overhauled the series to the point that it turned into an action shooter. A great action shooter mind you, but the horror genre stables (slow pace, puzzles that require some thinking etc.) are gone.
Look at Silent Hill 5 for an example of designers trying to mesh the old with fast paced action.
You might want to give RE4 a shot, and I'm sure you'll change your mind. Granted it pushed me away from the horror genre, but I really loved the way it was before.

I may just be anal about this whole genre, but it feels like nothing new and interesting has been added to it since..forever. (Please correct me if im overly wrong about this.) Cant say I cream my pants over those titles.
Hope it turns out good thou, as I know a good few people who loves both the genre and anything-RE.

@jayntampa: Ya agreed UC is great. One of the best damned amusing on rails shooters of our time.

@DaiMacculate: Will do. The Silent Hill game was terrible. :x Granted it looks like silent hill, it was just terrible and didnt make sense. One giant clusterfuck of silent hill lore smashed into an arcade shooting game that one was.
Oh yes that game was also headshot mania.

Actually, I think Umbrella Chronicles is quite fun and that it works very well. I'm not saying they should ditch RE5 for it, but I have no problems with on-rail shooters if they're done well. UC gives you actual reasons to replay it ... which is quite satisfying.

Ew. After how terrible their like previous arcade games were, I kinda dont want to see what they would make next.
Unless its similar to UC, since that is a damned fine game.

Sorry to double post, but I am getting the impression that the RE developers are starting to obsess about the action elements of the franchise and they're forgetting about the rich atmosphere and story telling. You only have to look at the series' development since RE4, which began the combat-heavy design, and the references to the average-to-meh RE movies, to get my meaning.
I respect that trends in the industry have to happen, but that doesn't mean we should drop the important reasons for why these games were popular to begin with.

And so it begins...
Given that RE rail shooters have never been developed with a high score goal, I'm not sure as to why Capcom keep insisting on making RE games with the rail shooter genre, given that high scores are the primary goal of most, if not all, arcade games. RE and rail shooters just don't mix very well, if you ask me. House of the Dead got the arcade gameplay down.

@DaiMacculate: I gave it a chance - several times. I remember playing HoTD at the arcade - I didn't like that either. Guess this type on rails shooter isn't for me. There's no a lot of good gameplay to be had IMHO.
I don't find UC scary in the least. There are a few tense moments, but not because a crimson head is coming - it's because your popping away on your little handgun (because you need to conserve the good guns for boss battles)hoping you can slow it down before you have to relode. The monotonous gameplay kinda reminds me of Killer7.
I'll still keep my copy - maybe one day my tastes will change and I'll enjoy it.

@sadkermit: Yeah, I've loved my Zapper games so far, maybe its just a matter of taste.
I keep hearing from people how good UC is, but since RE4 scares the hell out of my GF I'm hesitant to pick it up. She loves playing Ghost Squad though, so I'm on the lookout for more Zapper games we can play together.
Cmon Sega, throw open the vaults and give me more Zapper games where I don't kill undead! Not that I'm complaining about the HOTD 2+3 pack coming out.

I think UC sucks - worst RE game I've ever played. It's sits on the shelf - collecting dust, I have no plans to finish - even mp blows. Guess I just hate this type of game. bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang BORING.
My bet is UC sales are sucking and the *new* arcade game will bea modded version of UC....write this down so you can come back and hear - I told you so. j/k

Hooray! More support for the Guncon, please!
@Draconis: Another Gun Survivor (aka Dead Aim) is A GOOD THING!
@choirovwolves: Agreed, but isn't that sad? Politics interfering with our gaming?

@DaiMacculate: I don't find it to be on the same level as 4, maybe if you haven't played the games that UC features you'd find it a bit scary. For me - I was expecting to be doing other things that you didn't get to see in the original games, not fighting the same boss battles I already completed. Numerous times. With more control.
You should at least try it as a rental first maybe. I mean, for what it is (on rails shooter) it succeeds.

@sadkermit: Ah, so not on the same gore/fright level as RE4 then? Maybe I will pick it up if thats the case. I go through phases where I really want to play these types of games, then I don't for awhile. Right now I'm liking it (Ghost Squad, though it is too short)-I did not like Link's Crossbow Training at all though, especially ironic since I got 2 zappers :(

@Tofu_Survivor: Maybe its because there was always an english VA for Jill in all of the RE games.

Maybe Jill Valentine will be an unlockable character in the SFIV arcade version? What's interesting is Capcom hired an American actress for a Japan only game.

Us of us who played Dead Aim tend to disagree with the naysayers here. Just make a wicked sequel to Dead Aim and it's cha-ching! Or maybe not.
Maybe we'll get Wesker's Wicked Valentine Zero in which you play as a demonized Wesker trying to date Jill. *green button* *green button* *green button* *red button* *put controller in slot*

Umbrella Chronicles shouldn't be compared to Dead Aim. UC is one dame fine game, and I throughly enjoyed the opportunity to revisit some of my favorite characters in a new storyline after having some of them absent in a RE game for quite some time. Who honestly didn't think Dark legacy 1-3 was awesome?
I normally hate rail shooters (I.e: Area 51, PS1), but the fan service of UC and fast paced nature of the game made me retract my initial bias. If Capcom is offering more of that, I'm all for it. Now wheres the Regina love?
