Silent Hill Origins Heading to PS2
Posted by Brian Crecente at 3:00 AM on January 23, 2008
The sorta poorly received Silent Hill Origins is making the jump from Playstation Portable to Playstation 2, Konami said today. The title is currently in development for the last-gen console.
"Console gamers can now expect the same chilling, suspenseful and fear-filled experience that handheld gamers encountered when we released Silent Hill Origins on the PSP system," said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. "This is their chance to learn more of the mystery and mythos surrounding Silent Hill that's been hinted at in earlier games and made the series such a success."
The game will still have you playing as Travis Grady, trucker extraordinare, but will also include updated controls for combat. Zero P will be so happy.
Survival Horror Title Makes Transition from Handheld to Console
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - January 22, 2008 - Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. today confirmed speculation that Silent Hill® Origins, released last year for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system is in fact currently in development for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system. Now PlayStation 2 system owners will have the opportunity to experience this frightening and popular survival horror game, complete with signature sound and music from renowned Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka.
Players take on the role of Travis Grady, a lone truck driver making a routine delivery when he makes an unfortunate detour to the mysterious town of Silent Hill. Players must help Travis escape the city's horrific inhabitants and unravel the mystery of the strange hallucinations from Travis' past, visions that have plagued him since childhood.
Updated controls maximize combat, allowing Travis to use his fists, his wits and an array of weapons including a meat cleaver, pool cue and sledgehammer to fight his way through the nightmarish world of Silent Hill and face multiple endings based on his actions.

@Zhen-Chan:
Yeah but I really like PSP -> PS2 ports, even though I have a PSP I'd MUCH rather play its games on the big screen than on that tiny one. Until the PS3 furthers itself with more PSP connectivity, I'm all for PSP/PS2 ports.

Why would anyone buy a PS2 remake of a PSP game, its usually not as good...

The whole psp -> ps2 thing is NO GOOD for the psp. This is a system that needs its few exclusives to keep it afloat. Silent Hill was one of the games I got my psp for.

Besides, there are plenty of PSP games you can buy. Buy Patapon when it hits. Doubt that will be on PS2.

As long as this doesn't hurt psp sales I'm completely fine with it, as it just gives player more options of where to play certain games and it shows that psp games are good enough to be ported to consoles.
There are games that I have opted to play on psp rather than on a console even when it was available in both at the same time, like Xmen Legends 2 and some others, just because I though I would be able to play it more and enjoy it that way.

i don't think i'll EVER buy another PSP games if this trend continues...

The game is still selling well in my store. Silent hill games are always slow burners. They'll never set the world on fire though.

Another PSP title I own that will get ported to PS2 before I even play it. I need to slow down on the binge game shopping.

well...i guess this is due to poor psp games sales worldwide. Forcing devs to port games to PS2 to make a profit. I am sure if the psp games sold well...devs will kep it exclusive for psp.

Unless 1 version has more substance in it than the other, why is anyone bothered by this?
Why not have the option? Some people still own and like the ps2 and aren't going to get a psp.
The ps2 can push more raw polygons and textures(not sure if the new psp with more memory can do more textures now), but the psp, I believe, can do some fancy pixel shader things in HW that the PS2 cannot.

I'm glad to see this, as I don't really want a PSP (at least until Crisis Core and GoW comes out) for this. However, I don't like the breaking weapons that I've heard about. As long as this is about $30, I'll give it a purchase later on.

@Joyrex: "This just smacks of Sony greed..."
Umm, you do realize that Silent Hill is developed and published by Konami, right? The game may be on Sony systems, but it's Konami's game, and thusly their decision to port it. I'm assuming the game sold very poorly on the PSP, and they're trying to recoup some of their development funds. That's not greed, it's just smart business, and it certainly has nothing to do with Sony. Hell, I'm sure Sony would prefer they leave it as an exclusive; the PSP sure needs some.

Huzzah. This game never did belong on a handheld, IMHO. Silent Hill needs to be played in your living room in the middle of your surround sound system, and with the lights out. Also, the bigger the screen, the better.

I don't see the point, maybe I'm wrong but I just don't see how playing a horror game on a PSP is a good thing. So this coming for PS2 for my big screen is something I want, I hope they make it good :)

This just smacks of Sony greed with these PSP to PS2 ports - instead of focusing on making quality games that will encourage players to buy a PSP, they are causing several scenarios to occur:
1) PSP owner buys SHO for PSP, then is dismayed when PS2 version comes out, possibly with enhancements, and regrets his/her purchase, thus decreasing system loyalty.
2) PSP owner does NOT buy PSP version, thus hurting already anemic PSP software/hardware sales, in lieu of the inevitable PS2 port.
3) PSP/PS2 owner buys both versions, grudgingly out of loyalty to the SH franchise, but leaves him or her with less money to buy other titles on either platform.
I think Sony should be focusing on making PS2 games available via PSN, and playable on the PSP/PS3. That way, give players who want to play these titles real choice, rather than forcing them to decide which platform they'd rather have it on without having to buy both versions.

@RykinPoe:
I doubt we'll be seeing a port of the FF7 prequel. That thing sold many many PSPs in Japan, and will probably do so in the United States as well. I think Square Enix is fairly content leaving it where it is.

Breaking weapons? You're using a scaple in some cases, how far do you think a scaple is going to get you before it breaks? How many times would you expect to use a wooden handled sledgehammer to beat shit to death before it breaks as well?
TV, alcohol bottle - those are one time use weapons.
My complaint is health - I can't seem to keep it around. Love the game though. Totally awesome title to have on a handheld device.

The sad fact about this was the poor sales of this great game in the PSP,for this Konami make the port to the PS2,I guess trying to recover their investment,Just like the most of the PSP owners,I´m not happy with all this ports from our PSP,but even if the system is already selling very well in terms of hardware,in software sales is in very red numbers,I know that I can sound so childish and a dreamer one,but please, all of us that can have the opportunity to buy original software for the PSP ,do it,we have to do it,really scare me this stop 3rd party support -not so far if this trend continue-.

@EnigmaNemesis: Well,I think you´re right, the number of Wii/PS2/PSP ports is huge,je je this is like a time exclusivity :P and in the end is the right of the company to make money from their games, only hopes more 3rd party games and some exclusivities from Sony,I really want to play Dissidia in my tv but with the PSP feature to connect in the tv I done.

They are porting DS titles to the Wii, what is the difference?
You don't want them, don't buy them!
It isn't going to get someone to stop buying a PSP, for chances are if they are still playing on the PS2, and don't have a PSP or PS3, they probably wont get one based on these games here, or cant get one. But yet Sony can get sales off them for those particular games.

This is telling consumers that you don't need a PSP to play a AAA PSP title.
Not that Silent Hill is the best the system has to offer but it certainly is a game that has a built in audience. Some of which may have actually been intrested enough to buy the system. Now they don't have to.
The trend of quickly porting games could end up hurting sales of other games as well. Why would you buy a PSP for an excusive title when you can wait a few months and it be available for a system you probably already own and likely priced lower than the PSP verison.
