Simple 2000: The Japanese Hardware Chart
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 6:30 PM on January 18, 2008
Yes, we know that today has been just positively dripping was sales figure data, so it may be hard to muster up the courage to face yet another list. Please, bear with us, as we walk through another week of Media Create published hardware sales data for the week of January 7 to 13. As in the US of A, Japan still loves itself some Nintendo DS. But the handheld hit just narrowly escaped a weekly takeover by the PSP. It was so close! That would've been a story, friends.
The rest of it is, sadly, business as usual, as the nation recovers from New Year's spending. Probably a good thing as we're still coming down from the NPD bender from this afternoon.
- Nintendo DS Lite - 97,369
- PSP - 96,159
- Wii - 84,530
- PlayStation 3 - 38,907
- PlayStation 2 - 14,499
- Xbox 360 - 4,690

thats correct
DSs and even PSPs are as common as cell phones here. it seems like 2 or 3 DSs for every psp I see.

@Sloopydrew: the public transportation system in japan is awesome. SO theyre constantly on buses, trains, subways.
plus it seems (according to the ads at least) that they actually use the DS/PSP multiplayer quite often.
If it was like that here, id always use mine. Sadly im at home so much.. *sigh*...

Do the Japanese travel incessantly? Otherwise, how could the non-stop portables on top be explained (week after week and month after month)? I do own a DS, but I rarely touch the thing. I can only imagine people in Japan on the run 24/7. Either that, or they just really, really enjoy their entertainment in a convenient, compact form.

I'm amazed by the PSP's continuing success. It and the DS have over half the sales between tham.
It really looks like there is a continuing trend from TV-based consoles to handhelds. Personally, I've found myself playing my DS more than my consoles too.

isn't this the first week since Late November/Early December that the PS3 failed to sell at least 50k. With the 360 dropping below 5k again. to me the PS2 is about to die in japan new sales wise it's getting further away from the PS3 and closer to 360 sales for the last 3 months or so (discount christmas time sales spur)
PSP going UP and only up it seems go PSP maybe i'll get the slim version of you one day

Man thats a rather big drop for the 360 in comparison to last weeks sales. Guess last week was really caused by COD4s release perhaps?
Crazy how the PSP is almost caught up to the DS.

Go PSP! So close to the DS!
The rest of the numbers seem pretty low. I though the 360 was settling at a 6-7K range? This is a little disappointing.

I recently played my mate's PSP (I never played one before - not into handhelds) and really liked it. Of course, it was 50% because of the fact that I was bored during a break, but other than that it was pretty cool and enjoyable. I liked the graphics of Tekken for instance, a positive surprise from the little machine. Controls are cool for me, too.
I might actually pick one up instead of the DS.

And it's not because the DS has already saturated the market audience? They did say 89% ownership in 5 years or so.

Much of my gaming happens on the train these days.
I used to hate living an hour from work, but now all it means is two hours of guilt-free gaming per day.
The DS has made me love public transport.

@Irenicus-the one and only: There was talk in last week's comments about how 360 was almost at 10,000 and how this was some indication of it finally coming out of the doldrums, building up support, etc...
...but that was all bollocks. The fact is last week bloody millions of systems of all kinds were sold, it was a big sales week. When comparing the systems the number isn't relevant; only the percentages or ratios. Look at the (slightly misleading, 3D-squidged) pie chart for this week; then look at it for last week. This week's 360 slice is about the same size, or perhaps fractionally bigger, I can't be bothered to do the numbers.
Almost 5,000 is still good sales by 360 standards. The overall changes in these numbers from the latter part of last year are that Wii is back to being significantly more successful than PS3 (i.e. the Wii Fit effect continues), and PSP is much more successful since the new design/various games. Nothing else has changed.

I find myself playing more portable games ever since I got the DS back in Dec 05 and recently the PSP Slim. Back then you don't find many adults playing games while travelling in the Tube, but now it is a common sight.
I still play console games but not as often as I would like to. I prefer to play snuggled up in bed.

@Sloopydrew: For one thing, yeah, the Japanese do actually travel much more than people in the United States do. It's "the thing" to take one big vacation to some foreign country pretty much every year. It's usually a different country each year.
But most DS and PSP playing happens during commutes. Unlike most (though not all) of the United States, a lot of people there ride mass transit to work or school.

PS3's really gonna start to move up this year, I think. I know a bunch of people are waiting for Gran Turismo 5, and that comes out later. I dunno how much Japanese gamers dig the GTA series, but that's probably going to move a few systems out here...
I know I'm waiting for GT, GTA, LBP and Katamari. They're why I bought the PS3. In the meantime, I'm enjoying having my Wii and SMG, and Phoenix Wright on my DS.
I want a PSP, but I still dunno if I should buy one.

I need a DS. I have a Psp but I need to get a DS and play catch up with some of these games I've been hearing championed.
I play my Psp regularly at work. But I mainly use it for Tekken, Madden 08, Burnout and watching the TRON Umd I got a while back.

@Torgen thinks AAA has lost all meaning:
The reason I insist that your point has no relevance is because the Wii is only a gaming machine. If the Wii it isn't selling games it's a useless device.
The PSP on the other hand is a multimedia device. Even if you never buy a game for it you can still get lots use out of it. I use mine on a daily basis and I haven't purchased since November and I probably won't until Patapon comes out in late February.
Attach rates are a poor way to measure the usefulness of a device and should be the last thing on someones mind when considering whether or not a piece of hardware will be right for them.
