SNK's Arcade Classics Vol. 1 Titles Announced
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 6:00 AM on January 21, 2008
SNK is set to release a compilation disc titled SNK Arcade Classics: Volume 1 in the first half of this year for the PSP and the PS2. The collection contains quite a number of their famous fighters mixed in with some sports games and NeoGeo titles from their large library. Make the jump to check out all sixteen titles!
• Metal Slug
• Magician Lord
• King of Fighters '94
• King of the Monsters
• Samurai Shodown
• Art of Fighting
• World Heroes
• Fatal Fury
• Last Resort
• Top Hunter
• Sengoku
• Burning Fight
• Shock Troopers
• Super Sidekicks 3
• Neo Turf Masters
• Baseball Stars 2
For fans of SNK titles this is quite a gem of a collection and seeing as it's a volume one it stands to reason there will be a volume two. One wonders what treasures will they dig up for that one.

Oh, and I I guess won't be buying anymore NeoGeo games for the Wii either. I mean hell, with the limited memory afforded for VC games anyway, I might as WELL be putting a game disc in everytime I want to play a game that has a larger memory footprint, what with all the shuffling/deleting/re-downloading/moving to SD you have to do.

Lame. This had been announced for Wii also but I guess they decided to cancel it since a lot of these games are available on VC for $9 a pop.
The discrepancy between the price per game on VC and in collections like these is just absurd. I'm assuming the title will be $30, making each game about $2 a piece.

@RioHustlaInc: Seriously, what's with the lack of online implementation in these packs. Multiplayer is what made a lot of these games into classics in the first place and now that online gaming is just about everywhere it just doesn't make sense to me to neglect it in these reissues.

Crap. I would buy this for the PS2 and play it on my PS3 if mine had BC. Then again, there's always:
1. SCEI hiring "PlayStation 3 compatibility feature engineer" and wait for PS2 software emulation on my PS3
2. Purchase a PSP Lite within a few months
I think I'll go with option 2. Been eyeing up a PSP for quite some time now.

As A Neo Geo Home and MVS/Arcade Owner this is a great value for any Game player. These same games sell for upwards of $100-$3000 each for Neo Geo Home Cart System. Also consider these games sell for $10 a piece on Virtual Console and you are getting like 13 free games.

@Dang-fuzz: Online multiplayer would require a lot of time, money, and effort invested on a title that probably will still make a profit without it.
I can't speak for everyone, but the prospects of trying to make a ten to fifteen year old arcade game support network play doesn't sound all that appealing to me.

@EnigmaNemesis: Highly inaccurate, once again. $8 for two fairly unanimous top-10 all time games? (Link to the Past and Super Metroid). $10 for The Ocarina of Time? Sure, some of the lesser games aren't worth the price, but to blanket it like that is showing the kind of integrity you display all the time around these parts. Sorry, for a LEGAL way to experience those games, there isn't a better price.

The first Shock Troopers is possibly the most underrated Neo Geo game of all time, cuz it never got an official home release, I think. In order to play it on the home system you had to buy an arcade game (MVS to AES)to home converter called the phantom. That was an expensive investment for me, but I really enjoy my old school NG.

King of the Monsters, Shock Troopers and Metal Slug look like the only appealing things on there.
I miss that monster game (snes ver), squeezing my friends for an hour straight even though their bar was completely red. Then finally pinning them when they've had enough.

This is an awesome collection and worthy of a purchase by anyone who loves videogames. If Windjammers is in Vol. 2, that's another sale.
Now that the awesome is out of the way, what the hell is with people bitching how something like this doesn't have online (especially as its only for the PSP and PS2)? I'm getting sick of it. Yes, online gaming is huge today, but these games were in the arcade where you play alongside your friends. Are you people seriously too lazy to go over to a friend's house, or have them come over to yours? If you have no friends or family to do this with, there's an exception, but i do feel sorry for you.
Half the fun of multiplayer with such titles is the fact that the person you are playing with is in the same room.
This is the same reason i get annoyed with people bitching about the gimped online capabilities of the Wii with titles like Smash Bros Brawl (and the upcoming Mario Kart). I dunno, perhaps i'm just spoiled, having grown up through the 80s and 90s, and experiencing multiplayer primarily in the arcades, in friend's houses and at lans.
Online can't replicate the great social aspects of these types of gaming no matter how hard it trys. Text is unfeeling and voice chat is just annoying. Yeah i seem to have gone off on a tangent but i needed to get that off my chest. =/
end rant.

I don't have a PSP and I have no friends with a PSP and my family aren't gamers (Granted, I just gave my sisters my PS2, but I'm 31 and she's 16 and has totally different interests as far as gaming goes (DDR + dance pad, bleh)).
/A lot of my gaming friends have moved to different cities over the years. Online play is a way to keep in touch and game with all of them without all of us in the same city.
/once you hit 30, gaming friends in the same city are harder to come by. It would be easier for me to round up a group of friends to play golf or go bowling than it would be to round up folks for a last blade 2 session.

@Knoxximus: Won't happen - Data East made that game, not SNK. Who knows who owns the rights to their games.
@megahurtz: The single series collections include arrange soundtracks, which is well worth the $15 price tag. There's four or five collections that haven't been released stateside. They've got enough to keep going for several eyars.
@lordargent: Get the Gekka No Kenshi two pack from Japan. It has both games, and online multiplayer (actually, most of these compilations have online multiplayer in Japan.)
This whole set is one heck of a bargain.
Now where's my Sunsoft Collection? It was announced in Japan last year, and had Galaxy Fight and Waku Waku 7. C'mon, SNK-P. Make it happen!

Wow. That's really good cross-section of the first few years of the NeoGeo's life. I was hoping when tey said "SNK Classics" though that we might see Ikari Warriors, P.O.W., or Guerilla War. Oh well, maybe in volume 2...
Though if they're sticking to NeoGeo only for the next release then here's hoping that Super Spy, Ninja Combat, Waku Waku 7, Nightmare in the Dark, Twinkle Star Sprites, and Super Dodge Ball make the cut.
Either way, I'll be picking this up for both platforms when it releases.

I usually don't respond to ignorance but you obviously didn't "Hear" my sarcasm when i said " Legally Own all these games". If i need to explain myself any further, Neo-Geo Roms/Emulators have been around for a few years now so if SNK is going to try to milk some money out of these classic games, Now is the best time since the PS2 is nearing the End of it's cycle. I'm Sure " SABRE_JUSTICE" knows what I'm talking about. A compilation really has to mean something. These games are classic but it barely cost them anything to slap it together, throw some image galleries and concept art that's easily available online, shove it down our throats for $15-30 dollars Gaining Maximum profits. the only satisfaction we get is that we physically own the game and bought it "legally", when i can easily download the whole Neo-Geo Collection, Unzip the files, Customize the Control settings to my PC/360 Controller and be playing the games on Hi-Def with Filters turned on(No Pixels), Start playing before you even get back home from buying the game and making negative annotation's about my comment so you can feel better about yourself because you are mad that i own all those games?! @SpuddOner: I'm aware of emulation..used it myself for years in fact. It doesn't change the fact that you're a twat and your original comment wasn't sarcasm, just douchebaggery for the sake of it. Any claims you made to the contrary were refuted by your own words in your last post.
It might also be worth pointing out that emulation, like custom firmware on the PSP is something that the majority of consumers aren't even aware of, able to use, or able to understand. The bulk of my friends who have an understanding of emulation don't even own computers capable of running most of it. My own laptop is unable to run most emulators I'd care about with VBL Sync on and the framrate locked at 60 without periodic video and music stuttering.
Finally, claiming "sarcasm" on a message board is traditionally the sanctuary of trolls and assholes. Further evidence of dickhead status? You seem to take personal offense to the idea of a particular game being released at all. The type of person who forgets others may want this game and if you don't then there's no gun to your head forcing you to buy it.
