Solar-Powered "Nintendo" Handheld Is The Swiss-Army Knife Of Gaming
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:00 PM on January 23, 2008
This is a solar-powered MP4 player. Eh. It's also, however, a solar-powered Nintendo emulator, what with its ability to play NES, Famicom, Game Boy and Game Boy Colour games. Only catch is that the unit doesn't have slots for the actual carts: it's software emulation all the way, so you'll need to put the ROMs on an SD card before they'll work. The handheld costs around $US 120, and for that money you're not only getting the Nintendo emulation, but MP3, MP4 and WMA playback, a voice-recorder, flashlight and even a usb dock so you can charge other devices via its solar screens. A PSP for Nintendo-loving outdoorsman, if you will.

add gba and snes and it's as good as bought.
solar powered stuff is best if you also can run it with batteries so it's bi powered like some calculators.

I couldn't ever beat Boktai because of the weather around here, there's just not that much sun. Sucks.
I think that the model looks nice. I wish that it had GBA, SNES, and Sega Genesis support. If it did, I'd buy it. I go camping a lot during the summer, for 5+ days, so this would be awesome for that.

Not bad! though i echo the longing for SNES emulation, something many consoles dont seem to do well so far.

@fyren: Yeah, then the vampires come and take it from you. It's really annoying. Then when the battery runs out they bite you, I'm sure it's only out of annoyance though.

I think it's a great idea actually. Either side of my house has a window facing the sun all day and I do like classic games.

The thing is, I don't want to put something that cost me more than 10 dollars, let alone 120, in one place, alone, outside long enough to get charged. I'm in the kind of place where it would just disappear... The Twilight Zone! DEE DA DEE DA!

Hmm. If it also had SNES and maybe Genesis emulation, I'd call it full of win. As it turns out, it really doesn't do much that a PSP can't do.

How long would you have to charge this crazy thing, anyway? Or for that matter, anything you connect to it with a USB port?

its a shame the screens on the outside and solar panels are on the inside, unless the panels work not as good if scratched, i wouldn't know.
what i do want to know is: how big is this? will this fit in my pocket? and can i get this for less?

Why wouldnt you just get a PSP? Screw having just Nintendo emulation.. throw in some Sega Emulation, classic console and Arcade emulation and PS1 emulation to boot.
Then on top of all of that, you have your media and PSP games too.

Yay, useless portable something.
I sure hope Nintendo does NOT pick up on this.
The only use I see for this is to be able to charge your phone, via the USB slot, during a 7day festival. Preferably in Roskilde, Denmark.
But I dont know, might just buy 5 extra batteries instead..

you know if im in a sunny place that has enough power to energise a portable gaming device. I doubt i'll want to sit around and play it.
and that's not just because i'll burn up in the sun.
(because i will. it'll ruin my moon-tan )

Has anyone already ordered at Chinavasion.com? Are they legit? This looks pretty neat as a portable Zelda machine...
@BTownDesignGuy: Your watch probably works slightly differently from this. The idea with this gadget is that you leave it in the sun to charge the battery. The idea with your watch is that you carry it with you at tall times (I assume).

Funny story. I got a solar-powered watch from my parents when I was growing up in California. Then I moved out to the midwest, where the sun won't shine for weeks on end some times in the winter. I can't imagine how bad it must be in the Pacific Northwest.
Needless to say, my solar powered watch doesn't do as well out here. If my watch struggles to maintain full power, how will a device like this perform?

Waitwaitwait...So the solar panel is UNDER the game screen? So, if I want to play while things are charging, I have to be lying on my back holding this over my face to play it without being blinded? Fuck you China. Fuck you very much. Complete mockery.

Got mine in the mail, and I am in love. It does GBA and NES emulation, it played PAL and NTSC divx movies I put on it, it even made me coffee. It also had a keylogger virus living on the USB drive when I mounted it. It wouldn't mount on my Mac, so if you are an Apple user, you can only get games to the thing by using a card reader. Anyways, I am totally happy with my gizmo.
