Super Smash Bros Brawl Gets GDC Premortem
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 7:00 AM on January 16, 2008

Game Developer Conference Director Jamil Moledina updated his GDC08 blog today with a trifecta of Nintendo-related talks for the show, set to hit next month.
Top of the list, for me at least, was news that very recently delayed Nintendo super title, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be getting a public postmortem at the hands of developer Masahiro Sakirai. The developer will talk about bringing online to the fighter and how he and his team adapted it to play on the Wii. I hope he'll also detail how exactly he's doing a postmortem on a game that hasn't yet launched. I suspect there was a lot of screaming... and blood involved.
Hit the jump for details on what the team behind the Wii Fit and the Wii Menu will be talking about. Sounds like it's going to be another great show.
Takao Sawano, the project lead for Wii Fit and it's balance board, will be discussing the "philosophical and cultural ideas as well as the practical challenges" behind bringing the unique title to the Wii.
Takashi Aoyama will be walking his audience through all of the pitfalls and inner machinations behind the Wii Menu, which includes a large chunk of the Wii interface. It sounds like he will also be talking quite a bit about WiiWare.

November 19th, 2006, no Super Smash, pushed back to early 2007.
Early 2007, nothing... pushed back to summer.
Summer 2007, pushed back to December.
Fall 2007, pushed back to January
Late Winter 2007, pushed back to February
January 2008, pushed back to March.

Guys guys guys guys - there's an entire story about the Smash Bros Brawl delay. Redirect your comments there. There's a link in the article you neglected to read.
So anyway back to the article... I think that Nintendo is going to steal the 'game developer's conference' part of GDC... that is to say, that the reason everyone is there is going to be completely owned by Nintendo this time around, and all others are merely going to be bringing their demos, which game developers are interested in, but don't really benefit from. I think that this year, above all others, is going to be Nintendo's chance to show the gaming industry how Nintendo has succeeded so brilliantly in the last three to four years.

Don't worry. I'll never stop hoping for Megaman until I finally hear that someone has completed all the challenges and not unlocked him.
I've want Megaman in Smash Bros since I touched the original.
My hope, however, lies in the bold word below.
"but, Nintendo hasn't asked me yet if they can use Mega Man in their game."
Like I've said, just because they didn't tell him doesn't mean it's not happening. Considering that Inafune didn't control the artistry of the Zero series and, subsequently, ZX, I'm not so confident that he has a lot of say with Megaman anymore.

they are NOT delaying to add extra characters. you can't add a new character in 3 weeks, lol. Prolly just a production issue, or some such. I'm sure the game itself has been done, aside from maybe minor bugfixing, since late December.

Just as odd as a Japanese delay of one week equaling a month delay of the US version, despite the fact that the Japanese release already was going to have two and a half week jump on the market.
I'm not saying the whole release was caused by GDC. That'd be a bit absurd. I'm simply saying that the reason for the extensive US delay could plausibly be for the aforementioned reason.

Why can the internets no longer procure that image in its original form. Look at Bowser's flowing red locks. Notice the bad use of the rubber stamp tool that was overlooked. Eh Nintendo did this with Twilight Princess and now this, you wait so damn long, you read so much about it, and then when it finally comes out, you have found something else you care more about. I still wonder if they are going to wait and kick it back for a big summer release. If so prepare to wait till Xmas for Mario Kart.

Why not?
I'm aware that it will be out in Japan, but not for such an extended time that it would be a ridiculous notion to announce a final third party. This is especially true when you consider the fact that all third party characters will be hidden in game. The final third party could simply be one of the more complicated unlockables.
Also, GDC is hosted in the US, a territory that will not have had a Brawl release yet.
It would certainly explain why the US release is being pushed back so much farther than the Japanese release.

Just reiterating what previous posters have said. Assuming the game launches January 31 in Japan as currently planned, it shouldn't be too hard to do a postmortem in mid-late February.

You seem to not understand that the disappointment is BECAUSE of the hype.
Spore doesn't have daily updates concerning it.
I'm in huge anticipation for Starcraft 2, but I'm calmly waiting because Blizzard hasn't gone through the trouble of beating drums and starting a march towards release like Nintendo has.
For one, Sakurai clearly stated on the original Brawl site that he wouldn't even bother with regular updates until the game was practically finished. I understand the delay from December to February. That was all marketing. It would have killed sales of Galaxy, which would have been really bad considering the huge reception the game has received.
However, the recent delay is about a month for the States and merely a week for Japan. How much work can they do on a game in a week's time?

I hope that this delay is related with Mega Man X being added to Smash Brothers, then it is worth the delay.
If it is about the online component, I am not really banking on that because every game I have played on the Wii so far has been bad when it comes to online play.
Just focus on getting good characters and that is what is going to make the game sale.

Who actually thinks they are going to add more characters in one week? Anyone? I hope not. That's not to say there won't be more characters in the game than they've announced (that's almost a given really), but it's EXTREMELY unlikely they'd use the extra week to add a new character into Brawl. The ONLY possible way I could even see that happening is if they had a character they wanted to stick in the game but as release neared, it looked like they would have to cut them because they were too buggy even though they were very close to being done with them thus delaying it a week. However, that is incredibly unlikely. Probably more unlikely than winning the lottery.

I find it really interesting and/or amusing that everyone's crying foul over the SSBB delay, and griping that Nintendo titles regularly suffer delays...
And yet, nearly every 3rd party game for the Wii, along with scathing reviews, there are always accusations of rushing titles out the door, complaints that they should have taken the time to get it right.
Let's review: 3rd Party titles rush to market, and (with a few excellent exceptions) are universally panned, while Nintendo titles are delayed, even multiple times, and when they do come out receive glowing love fest reviews. I speculate that perhaps it's that extra time to get it right that makes a large part of the difference.
Of course, then there are the people who jump in after a stellar 1st party release, claiming that it's just another example of how Nintendo is killing 3rd party support... Wha?? I doubt anyone at Nintendo is pressuring other devs to get product on the shelf at the expense of quality. I think it's the devs' bean counters doing that.
