The Live Outage Poll
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 8:00 AM on January 15, 2008
Conflicting reports of Xbox Live outages continue to roll in to Kotaku Tower and now that Larry Hryb has been officially and legally muzzled there's no way to tell what's going on or how the fix is coming. Which is odd, you'd think they could at least update their subscribers about the issues without legal ramifications. Then again, I'm no lawyer. In lieu of official comment, the next best thing is to go to the users of Live to see if they too are still experiencing issues.
Hit the jump to vote on our very unofficial poll.

Well I spoke to a nice Indian call centre yesterday where they apologised profusely and said I would be “really pumped” when I got my new full version of an arcade game( did some people think they were only getting a free demo for free?) that I would have to “wait to see to believe”
They also expressed that the problem was indeed still ongoing and work was being done as we spoke. They declined to advise when the issue would be resolved but asked me to keep an eye on their official site.
Now I may just be a conspiracy theory nut but they shut down the aussie forums on xbox.com soon after Christmas when the fiasco hit its peak and I have still been unable to access them for 15 days, I did send a blast to everyone on my friends list and found about 30% of my friends are still unable to play any sort of multiplayer in a workable way. Most of those still affected are Aussies but not all.
So yes I know suing M$ appears a bit extreme, but maybe if they fixed the problem there would not be a case to answer. We all accept outages in service, power fails, telephones go out, mobile satellites crash from the sky. But when was the last time your cable tv was off for three weeks? Or your electricity? Or any service for that matter?
The point is M$ has not paid enough attention to this issue and has been blithe in its response, maybe suing them is the only thing M$ pays any attention to anymore? Personally I hope M$ learns that what happened was unacceptable and doesn’t let it happen again

Still a pain.
Since the live issue the new front end that came with the fall update takse takes 5 minutes the menus generate.
To add inslt to injury none of the XBLA games work, mostly thanks to being on my 3rd console and DRM authentication which is now only available over live.

I voted yes. I've had issues from it saying that am online and when I goto send a message to a friend etc. It knocks me off of live. Other times It'll tell me that am online but on the dashboard it'll say connect to xbox live. I would also disagree with people saying don't complain. Since it not only affect's online play it affect single player play also tons of games your playing and then all of a sudden you get kicked out of the game since it dropped you from live. I wonder to the people that say don't complain if this was your cable service would you be okay with paying and not being sure when you can watch tv and having the local cable company say oh it's cause we have a surge of customers.

I am still getting booted out of my party in CoD4, meaning that I (rather inconveniently) have to keep sending/receiving game invites after almost every match. Other than that it's working great.

Tore through 5 ranks in CoD4 over the weekend, bought Metal Slug 3 last weekend by buying points online, and upgraded to an adult account as well over the weekend. Only issue I've had was a single 3-second lag hiccup in a Hardcore Team Deathmatch game, and even then, I was dead, so it didn't matter.

@Totorototoro: It's probably more like they want to make the lawyers of the class-action lawsuit have to record outages themselves. When there's a website recording when XBL is having issues, it makes it so much easier on the opposing lawyers to record when Live is having problems.

I think the big question is, of the people who believe that there are no problems with Xbox Live at present - have you actually tried using it to play games, or did you just check to see if you can see your friends list and then assume all was well?
I play games online with Xbox Live every day, so I can state with absolute certainty that the service is far from working perfectly at present, and that was also the case during last weekend. If you believe that XBL has been fine since December, I respectfully suggest that you haven't been using Xbox Live very much and therefore cannot comment.

Zero problems at this moment. The spinning circle on the dashboard is merely an inconvenience; it's far from an issue to me, you just have to try several times to fully authenticate into the marketplace. Even when I get this, I can still start up a game and use matchmaking with no problems.
From a legal standpoint, they've probably been advised by their panel of lawyers to not make any updates on when Xbox Live is down because people are sue-happy right now. Every day it's a confirmed problem from Microsoft, that's another day that the class action lawsuit can obtain 14 cents per person. The people in the class action lawsuit have to record every instance they can't connect to the service. AKA M$ lawyers are making it more difficult for the other lawyers by forcing them to have thousands pages/videos of documentation of when users can't connect. Chances are, by the time they record all the evidence, it's probably going to cost more in ink and paper than they will receive for their compensation. I'd rather get twitter updates from Major Nelson of future Xbox Live problems than a total of $2 from a class action lawsuit, (I've only had 2 weeks of days with a lapse of service) probably only actually seeing half of that after lawyer fees if M$ isn't forced to pay that also.
Read the ToS by the way, people are only entitled to a maximum of their monthly fee; even a 400 point XBLA title would still cost more than what I pay for a month of XBL. If people these people suing over a maximum of $8 put this amazing effort into more important things, maybe we could stop the polar ice caps from melting, or stop the extinction of certain species. I ramble on when I'm upset about something.. TLDR my own post, lulz.

yeah, if we even get the first game. now with this class action lawsuit, who knows if we will still get it. if they can no longer provide us with updates on the status of live because of the suit, and by updating apparently is a confession of guilt, who knows what else they wont provide us with. who knows, giving us the game could be them admitting that they screwed up, and there lawyer wont like that. so these greedy kids from texas may have screwed us.

@Witzbold: It can really only be one of two things: Overloaded servers or a concentrated DoS attack that MS still hasn't traced down. Really though there is no excuse for either.
UNLESS (my personal theory) it was something in the Fall Update to Live that is causing the problems. Ever since that came out I've been having problems with COD4 matchmaking, a slow marketplace, and taking forever to sign into LIVE.

Cutriss
Posted 3:19 PM 14/1/08
It clearly does not seem to be anything location-based. I suspect that when you first register for Live, you are assigned a particular cluster that you usually connect to (which is not geographically-based), and that some of those clusters are having issues and they can't locate the commonality factor in it (though evidence does seem to suggest that the Fall update played a part in it).

I sent it in as a tip but fourzerotwo.com (CoD4 people) have a post on their blog about people losing stats on CoD4. They said Microsoft told them it was "apparently an SQL Storage Database issue which has been addressed."

For me the problem (in Halo 3 at least) has gone from taking forever to matchmake or not making a match at all to extreme lag. In one game I was the only person on my map for nearly a whole minute in the middle of a game. I ruled out my connection (cable) since it's never been that bad before. Then again, last night things seemed to work fine between 8-10 pm MST.

I keep getting logged out of XBL. It's been a good indicator to me that I shouldn't even bother trying to do matchmaking on Halo 3. Also, from time to time it takes me forever to load my friend list, and I also sometimes have to switch to the Media blade to start a retail game, since the Games and Xbox Live blades are too busy not getting Live content to allow me to start the disc tray.
Not to mention that I've been cut off from some of my XBLA downloads because of the shoddy LALALAWECAN'THEARYOU DRM system Microsoft insists on using.

Microsoft would probably be more open about the problems if there wasn't a class-action lawsuit against them. Pretty basic rule is "don't speak lest you incriminate yourself" - so perhaps if there was no lawsuit, the MS attornies wouldn't keep the higher-ups so tight-lipped on the issue.

I've been fine the past few days. I was having issue's connecting to almost all of my COD4 games and I would get weird stuff like 'Sign into XBox Live' would be on my main screen... at the same time it was telling me which friends were on line and that I was signed in. But it's been cool since Thursday or so.

its been on-and-off the entire time for me, but my dad has had nothing but problems. then again I dont play much multiplayer so most of my troubles have been listening to voice messages and downloading stuff off marketplace, and occasionally, connecting at all. They only bother me a couple of times a week.

During the first reported problems, nothing serious happened. It was after the fact about the third week in that I was having serious problems usually revolving around it saying that I was signed into Xbox Live, then wait 5 minutes for my dashboard to show up and then it says that I'm not connected to Xbox Live.

It doesn't register my vote. But yes, I'm currently having problems with Xbox Live.
Legally Major Nelson can discuss the status of Xbox Live. MS has muzzled him, or he's decided to muzzle himself.
And "What's an Xbox Live?" is such a funny choice, I wouldn't be surprised if it won.

Did the free xbox live arcade game give away ever happen? Or did I black out when they were being handed out? They really need to get their things together over at Microsoft, I love my xbox 360 immensely, but enough is enough.

It is better than it was this past weekend, but only in the sense I can now log on. I haven't been able to play Halo (game disc left at friend's house an hour and a half away 2 weeks ago) since this all got really bad though, so we'll see when I get it back this weekend how it goes.

After recovering my account last week after about a week and a half of failed attempts... it's still not working. @DomZ: Your evidence is astounding. Really.
I'm not on XBL, but I know a good number of people that are, and it's really hard to get an accurate percentage of who's having problems and who isn't. For some people, it seems like Live is working well enough one day, and the next, they can't even log in.
