The SNES Was The Best Console EVAR
Posted by Mark Wilson at 7:40 AM on January 26, 2008
CNET just published a story by Don Reisinger claiming that the Super Nintendo was the greatest console of all time. He argues that the console was the ultimate successor, "a follow-up that was worthy of the 'Super' moniker and gave developers the license they needed to create the legendary titles that we still play today." Personally, I'd agree with his casually argued logic—there's a reason I'm anxious to port Super Mario World to every device on the planet but bored by the thought of playing PSOne games on the PSP. Of course, this is all just one man's opinion and many of you won't agree. So go ahead and vote below before elaborating in the comments.

The only good games were made by Nintendo. All the 3rd party games were slow, boring and choppy.

1 Dreamcast
2 SNES
3 PSP
4 GBA (aka "Pocket SNES with awful sound")
For the longest time I'd have gone with SNES, but the little time Dreamcast was on the scene it wowed me with its originality and fun.

Yes - pound for pound, best system ever.
Dreamcast did a great job too.
BUT, for the system that I am most attached to? 360. It's the only console that I "miss" if I can't turn it on for a few days on end.
But for those of you tossers who put the Genesis in front of the SNES? You are blind, friends.

Grew up with a 2600, graduated to an Atari XE, then NES and all the rest. Best for my money is the Dreamcast. Glad I'm not the only one to think so!

Everyone keeps going on and on about the Dreamcast- why no love for the Saturn?? I LOVED my Saturn, though ultimately sold it b/c I was a poor college student who coveted a PSX so I could play Jet Moto w/ my friends. Hates that decision, I do.

I have two consoles hooked up to my TV - a PS3 and a Super Nintendo. There you go. And I think I'm the only person who still pronounces the name as "Super Nintendo" rather than "Sness" when I talk about it.

Um yes. I had disposable income.
(ok, it was the Sears system, but still an Atari inside)
NEOGEO was amazing and ... expensive then!
PS3-everyone gripes "too costly, no games, wahhh". Fine, I'm diggin it like DigDug. Go wait for Fedex and your RRoD casket.

I'm going to go ahead and say it: The Genesis completely sucked. The best games were mostly knock-offs/inferior versions of better SNES games (yeah Beyond Oasis... you try to be Zelda). Sonic was overrated, the sound chip on the Genesis sucked, and the only reason it was as popular as it was was due to Mortal Kombat's blood.

I got my current Super Famicom off eBay, it's been painted silver and given a blue LED and the cartridge port has been professionally widened so it can run US games. It's also got a 50/60Hz switch for running PAL games full speed.

Absolutely not.
I'll grant it had some fantastic games, but was the system itself worth a damn? Not really. You had to blow into it to get it to work, and I don't seem to recall it keeping track of achievements.

PS2 is so far my favorite. I did like the SNES, but there was a lot of trash movie license games on it that sucked amongst a ton of other games that sucked.
Enix, Square, Rare, Nintendo, and Capcom made some fantastic games on the machine. They will always go down in history as some of the greatest games of all time.
But I happen to think the PS2 just stomps it in every way. There were just way more games I enjoyed on the machine.

I agree, too, the snes was the best. Screwattack gave it #2 in their consoles if I remember correctly, behind the PSone. I still think the snes is the best, though.

I've got to agree. Variety of games is the key. The SNES didn't just have a couple of good games in a given genre, it had tons of great games in every genre. Since then, pretty much all the different consoles have had more of a niche market (the PS2 comes closest to this, but still doesn't have the variety the SNES had).

I can't vote for this on the account that I believe (god, how can I type this?) the PS2 to be the greatest console so far. I just thought if I could have only one . . . it would have to be the PS2. The only fissure in my thinking is that playing FPS games, a genre I've learned (read: been forced) to love on the 360, is agonizing on the PS2. Other than that, it does have everything.
Where are the music games on the SNES? No, Mario Paint does not count.

@PlayingKarrde: i agree with you there as the american ones seem to suffer the 'yellowing' a lot faster. if you've ever seen a snes dragged out of a closet that saw a lot of playing time and sunlight back in the day, you know what i mean.
at least when they were grey and boxy they looked kind of rad and futuristic. i can still remember the feel of the controllers and the smell of the styrofoam from when i unwrapped mine for the first time. ahhhh. memories.

I don't understand calls for the PSX, btw -- I knew a lot of people grew up on it (still a weird concept for me) but how many of those games does anyone want to play now? MGS and Symphony are still amazing, but there's not much to bother with on it anymore.
Everything on PSX pretty much has a "better" version of it out, since 3-D graphics/controls were so infant back then. But SNES games are still pretty good lookin, control well and are fun.

Sorry, but there weren't even a handful of good mega drive games. Even though we didn't get Chrono Trigger or FF6 in the UK, you could import them. But even without those two the SNES had a crapload of greatness the Mega Drive couldn't hope to produce. Plus the controller rocked MD's all over the town.

I love how this post, ever so slightly, still manages to crack the thin veneer of peace between Sega and Nintendo Fanboys and bring out some haters of both persuasions. My memories of being a rabid Nintendo fanboy are what tempers my hatred for immature fanboys of more recent consoles, I remember being like that when I was 13, so I can't be too mad about it.
Also interesting because so many of us who used to have just a SNES or just a Genesis are probably now multi-console owners, since we're now old enough to buy the thing ourselves ;) I wanted a genny back in the day, but I wouldn't have admitted it... :)

Call me old fashioned. As I see it, the SNES and Saturn (in Japan) were the epitome of the old gaming generation, before the takeover of the current "games as interactive movies" generation started with the PSOne. That was when "hardcore gaming" was an issue of skills, reflexes, memorization, and endurance, and RPGs pre-FF7.
The Dreamcast was the swan song of that generation, but couldn't survive the fight against the PS2. Its too bad that this style of gaming is pretty much relegated to portables and online distribution.

Remember that time Nintendo released the Wii and had an awesome system in place (the Virtual Console) that could download SNES games?
Remember when they made HORRIBLE use out of it and it ended up becoming a Sega and 8-Bit circus.

LttP, Super Mario World, SNES Star Fox (one of the greatest game soundtracks ever), Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario Kart, Turtles in Time, Bart's Nightmare, Super Metroid, Battletoads/Double Dragon, The Lost Vikings, Rock N' Roll Racing, and many many more.
Seriously, Blizzard needs to stop with this World of Warcraft BS and make me another Rock N' Roll Racing and Lost Vikings game!

1.NES - I was a kid and that NES was used longer then any console I ever had. Plus being that young it was the most impressionable on me as to this day I hum NES game tunes, never dreamcast or xbox games. Plus sheer volume with allot of quality in there. On top of that being that young I could not go into the 16bit era till two b-days later hehe.

God of War 1 & 2, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Dragon Quest VIII, Rogue Galaxy, Odin Sphere, the Shin Megami Tensei games, Katamari Damacy, Rez, Bombastic, Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, Disgaea, Contra: Shattered Soldier, and a whole crapload of other games I'm not mentioning. It's got the largest library and just an unprecedented amount of quality and classic games.
That said, I voted "yes" to SNES being the best console ever. Though, I'm not really sure why. I suppose, FF 2 & 3, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Super Castlevania IV, Super Mario World? Yeah. That's enough reason.

SNES had Chrono Trigger, FF4 and 6, a lot of great multiplayer games (Secret of Mana, Super Mario Kart), great platformers, Super Turbo Street Fighter II or whatever, Mega Man X. My favorite system ever.

@Gadgetron: No...the only current gen console you can make a case for "beating the crap out the SNES" is the xbox 360 due to its strong library of games and online community. Man this ones difficult. The SNES was one of my favourite consoles ever due to titles like dkc1-3, mario kart, mario world 1 & 2 etc. For me the triple A titles on the n64 were more groundbreaking however, like mario 64, diddy kong racing, lylat wars, Zelda ocarina of time & goldeneye - but then the SNES certainly had MORE quality games than the N64 did due to lack of 3rd party support. However i would gladly make a case for the Xbox 360 being the greatest console of all time after only 2 years, there has been a plethora of 9-10/10 games that provide many-a-unique experience and nothing beats the sense of the online community that the 360 provides.

I definitely agree that the game would probably look a lot worse compared to some of the other RPGs on the PS2, but thats mostly just referring to the combat. I've heard things about Jade Empire but never played it, however its apparently KOTOR without the crappy combat system so that might be worth looking into for some people. @ArchMemnoch: One of the 'games' I've been playing the snot out of recently, beating anything I own for the 360 so far, has been the Sega Genesis Collection for the PSP.
So I agree that the games themselves are far more important than all this "next-gen" hype. That's not to say I don't love my 360 or the games I have, and enjoy looking at and playing great graphically superior games, but *good* games (and A Link to the Past is still also one of my favorite all-time and remains extremely playable) stand the test of time more than good *looking* games do.
It's also one of the reason why I play more XBLA games. I'll put 8 hours into Pinball FX and Aegis Wing before I'll ever put 8 hours into Assassin's Creed or BioShock any day.

@Furious_Liver: Meh, I thought KOTOR was one of the most overrated games in the history of gaming. Everybody kept telling me "just wait a little longer, it gets really good eventually!" Then it was over, and I was like, "that's it?" I kept waiting for this magical point when it gets good, and it never came, and I had wasted 29 hours of my life (yes, 29 hours - it's freakin' short for an RPG).
I don't even remember a whole hell of a lot about it. I remember walking through various generic spaceports and spaceships doubling as dungeons and searching through lots of crates and boxes and lockers. And I remember some pretty rudimentary combat that was sort of a hybrid between a fighting game and an RPG but was really the worst of both worlds - neither as exciting as a fighting game nor nearly as deep as a traditional RPG. I *barely* remember the final battle, except that it wasn't as much difficult as it was frustrating because it involved lots of running around all over the place and getting stuck on various objects.
I really think the reasons why this game got such a good reception were:
a) It's a Star Wars game, so people *want* to like it if there's any redeeming value at all, and
b) It was among the first "real" RPGs on Xbox, so Xbox gamers naturally latched onto it and milked it for all it was worth.
If it had appeared on the PS2, it would have simply gotten lost in the shuffle of every other mediocre game on that system (and every other mediocre Star Wars game). There are just too many good RPG's on the PS2 (or SNES, for that matter) for this game to have made any impression if it had been released on that system.
The funny thing about it to me is that people complain about how easy FF games are, but KOTOR was without doubt the easiest RPG I have ever played. I didn't need a strategy guide, and I never needed more than one or two tries to beat even the toughest bosses. I breezed right through it, which was one of the reasons I couldn't believe it when it was over. It felt like the game was just *starting* to ramp up in difficulty by the time it ended.

Tough call, but I have no problem seeing it #1 on any console list.
I would absolutely LOVE to put Dreamcast at the top of mine, but I just can't because it didn't have the shelf life and the high number of really high quality games that an all-time great system needs to have. Do NOT get me wrong on that statement, the Dreamcast was incredible, and it is seriously the only console I have kept in my entire life. I still have it in my extra room, and I'll never get rid of it. But I can't truthfully put it ahead of the SNES.
These lists are always hard, because you want to put whats new up at the top because it's fresh. In my mind the PS3 could end up being one of the all-time greats considering everything it can do.
But if you're JUST talking games, yeah. I've got no problem with the SNES #1.

I guess we do need to bear in mind that the newer consoles are able to emulate our golden treasures. If we're talking best console based on games then really you have to kind of look at the newer ones for the reason they can run the oldies too.
For instance, the Xbox is probably the best console out there to play emulators as you have perfect emulation of Snes, Mega Drive, Neo Geo, MAME, GBA, PSX blah blah blah. The PSP also does a mighty fine job too.
Then the PS3 plays both PS1 and PS2 games (well mine does) and might play PSP games in the future and you know it's only a matter of time before the firmware is hacked and it runs emulators too which would probably then make it the best. The 360 afaik has nothing apart from a few crappy Xbox games to play.
Just throwing that out there.
Oh, and the Dreamcast is also excellent in the above departments too.

Ok, I disagree. Snes was great for RPG's but lacked pretty big time in the action department. I'd also bemoan the huge amount of kiddie directed titles on the system.
Sega Genesis, PS1, PS2, now Xbox 360 are easily as good as the Snes. I think there is just a greater contingent of overly nostalgic Nintendo fans elsewhere. This is also the reason that so many Nintendo and old-school Nintendo games get so overrated.

HOW THE CRAP AM I SUPPOSED TO PREDICT THAT KINDA STUFF!? Then again I generally dislike Mario also...however Super Mario World was the only Mario game I really enjoyed. Super Mario Bros 3 had a pretty amazing stage layout for its time though.
But yeah...A Link to the Past and Super Metroid are the reasons I owned one. Not to mention the crapton of other fun games that weren't necessarily first party.
Damn I love the 2D era.

Its so odd for me to read peoples lists of top SNES games and think that I honestly don't like half of them. Only ones that ever really grabbed me were Zelda (best in the series next to Phantom Hourglass! 3D ones do nothing for me), TMNT4, Final Fantasy 2 & 3 (4&6, whatever), Chrono Trigger. Honestly have a hard time remembering any others. Always preferred Genesis ports as well. They just felt more responsive to me. Sharper somehow. Dreamcast just grabbed me and never let go. Once I played Soul Calibur, I was in love. So much innovation on the DC, too. Even the bad games (Blue Stinger?) did something interesting.

Dreamcast for all around goodness and quality. Sega Genesis for any and all sports games of the era. Neo Geo for arcade perfectness(is that even a word?). And the SNES for the one console that I always wanted but just couldn't bring myself to actually purchasing. Biggest regret of my life this far. That and buying that damn 32X.

PSone is #1 in my book with SNES shortly behind it.
Vagrant Story, Castlevania: SOTN, MGS, and the dawn of rhythm games makes it unstoppable in my book.

In my personal opinion, anyone who says that the ps2, xbox, ps3 or 360 should have the title, were obviously born after 1992(I myself being born in 1986)
Anyone who grew up with the Super Nintendo knows just how great it was, and you don't even need to argue why, because it is a given. I will however role a few none nintendo titles off tohe top of my head:
Illusion of Time, Terranigma, Harvest Moon, Chrono Trigger, Sunset Riders, Killer Instint, SUper Streetfighter II Turbo.....the list could go on, and that is my point. Unlike newer nintendo consoles, it isn't just the first party titles that are awesome
I hate it when people use the term "golden age" for anything, but realistically, in videogaming terms, the SNES era so far is definitely the VG equivalent.
Even after my initial statement about newer consoles, I'll admit that the dreamcast and PS2 would make up my top 3 (due to shenmue I and II, Skies of Arcadia and GTA III-SA, Pro Evolution Soccer, Okami, SotC respectively)

Genesis was my favorite, followed by DS and then PS2.
I always felt that there was never really a need for SNES back then. I do love that it introduced F-Zero and Mario Kart!

@y2kenjination: Tekken 3 was indeed the "shit" (shit being positive in this case) for its time. Tekken Volleyball and Tekken Force were too damn fun. Bring back Gon plox. ;~;
Ah, memories of playing Tekken 3 in the arcades...where every single kid would pick Eddy and then be amazed as I performed a tactic that was something beyond their wildest dreams...a low block.

Hmm, for me it would have to be the Playstation. SNES was great and had many classic games that I love, but I just enjoyed the Playstation more. Heck, the first game I experienced on Playstation was Resident Evil. Once I got one, it was hard to go back to the SNES...but I did from time to time.
