Turok - Awakening The Giants Part III
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:20 AM on January 25, 2008
Touchstone's Turok making-of series Awakening the Giants continues this week with a look at creating the game's antagonists. The team at Propaganda lay out how the artificial intelligence was developed for both the savage, bloodthirsty dinosaurs and the cunning, strategically thinking human enemies. After a bit of speculation last week I dug around a little bit to discover that it is indeed Electric Playground's Victor Lucas - one of the nicest guys in the industry incidentally - narrating the series. Score one for my super-powered auditory senses! In case you missed them, be sure to catch Victor's VO performance in part one and part two of the series.

Played the demo, didn't like it.
The XMB icon for the demo was pretty cool though, partially transparent and stuff, pretty darn cool, 9/10 for the cool logo.

@DangerChimp: What!? To me the best part is that you're 'running around and shooting dinosaurs'.
But then again, to me Jurassic Park is the greatest movie ever made.

Looks pretty average-garbage from where I'm sitting. Button-timing seems to be the only "innovation" here and at the end of the day, you're just running around and shooting dinosaurs. Blah.

I also found the demo to be a little generic and didn't seem like there was any big reason to buy it. Turok does some stuff well but nothing that hasn't been done much better elsewhere. Granted though, stealth killing all manner of dinosaur is the funniest thing you'll see all day.

@smitty1123: The trouble is any game that drops you into a tutorial is just irritating. I agree for the demo some assistance would be nice but if the game has a 'press x to do this' that would bug me, because the last time I checked we're not too illiterate to read the manual.

Unless they re-create (faithfully) the first level of the N64 game (without the jumps) this game is destined for mediocrity (rental)

I am enjoying these little videos they're releasing. It is making me want the game a little more every time.
I guess I'm easily entertained, but I enjoyed the demo enough to make me want to buy the game. I mean, my choice is easier than most people because I get my brother to go in 50/50 with me so I don't have to pay the full $60 for it, but even if I had to I think I would.

That's awesome they left the raptors fighting eachother in the game. Hope this rocks.

@Luis: Ditto. Also, any demo that just dumps you in without even attempting to explain the controls just screams lazy development.

I really want the to be good because it has dinosaurs! On the other hand I don't want it to be good so I don't have to buy it.

I played the demo of this last night (OXM disc) and wasn't liking it so much. Seemed pretty middle of the road.

Downloaded the demo last week. Really excited about playing it.
Played it for about an hour then deleted it, and struck it from my "intrigued, possible purchase" list. What a pile of UTTER BOLLOCKS. The FPS genre has been ruined by the high standard of Call of Duty 4. Turok needs a LOT more polish.

Very flashy developer interview. However, gameplay still looks like arse. The FPS perspectives remind me of a Quake 4, simplistic.

@TearsandScreams: The demo didn't come with a manual.

@Mr Bentley:
agreed, CoD4 put a crimp in a lot of developers' day.....lol.
The one big mistake they made is the lack of over-the-top weaponry, that is what Turok has always been about IMO. I can understand wanting to ground the series a little more to appeal to current gamers but they could've implemented an upgrade system to allow for things like a cerebral bore attachment for the RL, poison arrows, etc.

If this game doesn't excite you, then you're a jaded gamer, and probably a jaded fps-player at that.
That's not the developers fault.
If you couldn't figure out the controls without a tutorial, I don't know why. I didn't have an issue at all, also, whenever I ran into an activity the first time, the interface told me which button to use to progress.
I can't wait to run around in a next-gen version of Jurassic Park... I adore the concept.
I'd much rather play a testosterone fueled macho hunt like this than yet another over-hyped Halo game with a yawn for an ending and nothing truly epic in it from A to Z. Halo 3 was like a series of skirmishes, it never truly felt epic. If you ask me, the shots of that T-Rex and his behavior and the animation are beyond anything I've seen in Jurassic Park... worth the price of the game alone.
I don't understand why the Microsoft Money Machine gets so much kudos when they're so disingenous, and then smaller developers like those behind Turok get yawned at before they're even out of the gate. It must be horrible to be a game designer these days.

I want to like this game and these previews make me want to play it. But I still think this game will have some fatal flaw. As mentioned above the demo (which I haven't had the chance to play)didn't even attempt to explain the controls. And for the millionth time, and can't believe they considered a team killing achievement.

The game looks great, but the voice in the backround makes me hate Electric Playground even more.

@Mr Bentley:
How do you know that they didn't add super powerful weapons? Have you played the final build of the game?

@timeywimey: We don't know that for sure. I agree the Cerebral bore is awesome but this game can succeed without it.
And to those complaining about the lack of control explanations in the demo, you are pathetic people. If you have ever played an FPS on the 360 before you should be able to figure it out. And if you are really that inept you could look at the controls in the options menu.

This Turok Game has nothing to do with the old ones or the old series.
