UT3 Is Ready For 360, No It's Not
Posted by Mark Wilson at 5:40 AM on January 3, 2008
This page article a German gaming magazine (can anyone name it?) claims that the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 is 90% finished, and that it will be released around April 2008. However, Epic's Mark Rein quickly addressed the article to clarify that Epic had not set a release date (which is believable, since UT3 PS3's release wasn't solid until the last possible moment) and that as of right now, their focus is to release the PS3 European version of UT3.
Who out there has been playing a lot of UT3? And is anyone eagerly awaiting the 360 version? Do you still care about the franchise?
Mark Rein: We don't have a solid release date for UT 3 on Xbox 360 [maxconsole]

I'm still going back to halo 3 afterwards, but I'll play it like I used to play Shadowrun, maybe grab some achievements, and I love playing with level editors.

@-Sigil-: what are you talking about? All the levels in UTIII aren't corridors. When I host games the levels that are always voted for a Shang Gri La and Rising Sun. Those are definitely not corridors.
@chickenmonkey: take it back. It's not for you.
@Tiberian: if you're not excited for the game then a rental may or may not help. I'd say if you feeling indifferent about it, forget about it and just move on.
Obviously, deathmatch gaming isn't dead even when Resistance still has a good number of people still playing it. UTIII fills a nice section of my library where it's all about deathmatch. blazing fast, run and gun gameplay. Oh I can't remember who wrote about mouse and keyboard not requiring any real skill but dual analog does...you sir...have no FUCKING clue as to what you're talking about.
I hope this doesn't turn into the retarded argument of UTIII will only be good if it's on 360. Because the same way people are going on about UTIII being mindless, Gears of Wars wasn't exactly delivering Shakespeare in the generic story and the "been there, done that" war torn earth. Even the cover system wasn't pioneering. If you really want to be technical, Winback, as foggy as it was presented a similar cover system with extensive animation to match waaaaaaaaaay back in the 64 era.

I'm kinda glad the game sold bad, it is good but only because UT itself is good, it hasn't evolved except graphically. Plus it's fun but not very deep or complex since it's got no well designed levels pretty much (MP) too much corridors without much cover.
It'll sell better on the 360 though cos alot of 360 fans like FPS and games sell much better on the 360 than PS3.

I would have cared about it... if it was released day-and-day with PC or even PS3 version. I got tired of games releasing on the original Xbox, and now that the 360 is the market leader in America, there's no reason whatsoever to delay those games (even though Epic's excuse is for the lack of user created content)

I was originally going to get UT3 for PS3 but after hearing of the 20% speed nerf, the dodgy mod support and about how I might have to wait a little longer for it to get released in Australia, I decided to get the PC version instead. Sure, it looks crap on my antiquated computer (6600gt ftw) but the framerate is just fine.
As for people saying that it's the same game they've released three times before, well, I guess that's true to some extent but UT3 is infinitely better than the big bucket o'AIDS that was 2k3/2k4, despite the fact that it's a little rough around the edges. And if you honestly think UT99 is 'better' than UT3 perhaps you need to make yourself aware of the terrible things nostalgia can do to good judgment.
However, online stats are screwed. Only about 10% of my games actually seem to count.

@Mr Bentley:
you can order UT3 from US, they aren't region locked. The import costs might be a bit stiff though.
I've played the demos for
Blacksite:
first demo, dull but fair.
second demo, first part, incredibly dull and generic feeling, even with the enhancements to gameplay like morale and squad tactics.
second part really, really impressive I love the part where it starts out safely in the air, then you are force down into the area and the chopper is struggling to get back up. Nice and tense and shows the engine off to good effect. The game however doesn't seem compelling really.

@MR Bentley: You should calm down, sounds like your trying to justify your purchase a little too cos regardless of if consoles are good PC do have superior stability (high end PC). But I do agree that consoles are much cheaper, run the games perfectly still and it doesn't require a PC to enjoy the game to the full. I have a 3.2GHZ, 2gb ram, decent graphics card PC and I don't buy any games for it cos I just prefer consoles.
Consoles are way more fun, sit on a chair and use a mouse or lay on the bed with a bigger better TV?

Here's another knock at PC gamers: mouse and keyboard.
"It's so much easier to control!" you say. Yeah, I used to think that. Then I realised I was just pointing and clicking, and there wasn't actually much skill in it. It's like playing Myst at high-speed. Joypads have come a long way since the old "keyboard & mouse versus joypad" bollocks started. They use ANALOGUE CONTROLS now, you know. And because it's not just "point and click and you die" there is actually a fair bit of skill in aiming with a keyboard. If the game does it right. On PS3, COD4 gets it right. TimeSplitters got it right. Half Life 2 gets it very wrong.
I agree in principle that aiming is easier with keyboard and mouse, but I know in my heart it makes it too bloody easy. Real soldiers take aim and fire, they don't point and click.

Unreal Tournament III is the first Unreal Tournament game that I have ever bought/played. I think that the game is one of the best Deathmatch type games I have ever played. I actually read an article on Kotaku that said that this was a good game to get so I took the website's word for it. I realized very quickly that this game isn't too much about storyline as it is about gameplay but the gameplay is so great that (if your are like me) you just don't care about storyline in this game. They should definately add some offline multiplayer though...

Just a quick note to anyone who state things like this:
"If you really care about [insert game here] you will have it on the PC as [insert console here] version will be inferior for some random reasons that I have in my brain [mainly that I spent thousands on my PC and I need to justify it to myself when I could just have bought a console for my gaming fix]"
The note is this: you sound like a dick.
NOT EVERYONE HAS A HIGH-END PC. EVERYBODY DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME CONSOLE. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY SHUT UP, CRAWL AWAY, AND DIE. Or just change the record, which would be preferable.
Kotaku is a multi-platform gaming news site, not a place for snobs to come on and chant thinly veiled brags about how their gaming set up is better than the next persons. It's getting SO BAD around here that I fear I may snap and do something worthy of a beating from the banhammer.
Aaah, feel better. I'm still waiting for Unreal for PS3 my friends, being an unloved European. I have no idea how it is going to be on PS3 but after playing the Blacksite demo, I am sure going to be wary before I buy another FPS. Jesus, Blacksite is just AWFUL. I know it's not by the same devs but it shows how much difference there can be between a screenshot that looks okay, and a game that plays like a wet turd sliding down a bannister.

@Padriac: The architecture and actual texture work is amazing technically, but yes, I sincerely hate the style they have chosen for the characters and voice acting. I thought the marines in Halo were insultingly 1 dimensional, until i played ut3 and remembered how bad EPIC was at this.
Please mature this franchise EPIC. You do recall the majority of us playing are adults? This isn't even silly/funny in a knowingly tongue in cheek way, it's just flat out stupidly childish. And I don't think you'd lose a great deal of younger players in doing this. Look at Counter Strike, or COD4, or BF series. Plenty of popularity there.
Of course the Strogg in QuakeWars sound like muppets to me.

@GorbyGipper: I completely agree with the pacing of UT in the past being ridiculous: it was almost unplayable if you weren't incredibly good. However, UT3 definitely improves this, especially on the PS3 where they slowed it a bit more. I find it adds a bit more finesse and leads to actual "showdowns" vs. the usual bunny-hopping around and randomly killing things style that UT was known to have before.

@GameChad: Stories don't really apply to online multiplayer. Team-based play is not necessarily better than single-player deathmatch style play... they're just different.
Thus: UT3 is not "bad" simply because TF2 exists. Sometimes I don't want to run around being a medic or whatever.
I do whoever agree that Epic in general has piss poor art/style direction. I'm embarrassed to play UT3 or Gears in front of normal people with how Mountain Dew Extreme juvenile it is.

UT Franchise is my favorites FPS franchise for its weapons & Dodge System. It is the only series that allows you to effectively dodge a bullet :P
UT3 is a very good game but I think the UT fans were pissed off of some features removed & the game being buggy on PC. Some people didn't even bother installing the patch & just uninstall the game.
I have it on PS3 though. It runs flawlessly, its much better than UT04 because they return the fun factor UT originally had. Feign Death & Funny kills & Jump boots :P

To me, it's very obvious that different people like different games.
I LOVE Halo.
I LOVE Perfect Dark Zero (I know, but someone's gotta).
I think COD4 is overrated and GRAW is a pile of shit.
I think R6 Vegas is a pile of shit in a casino.
I think Ghost Recon 1 is still the best Ubi-published shooter to date.
I loved Unreal back when the original UT came out and I'll give UT3 a chance...I just don't care much. The pacing of UT is just kinda a cluster****.
What I'm saying, I guess, is to each their own. Halo and Unreal are completely different types of shooters. They appeal to different camps, though some will dig both games.

After the TON of FPS's that actually have stories and co-op play and a bit more depth to even the weapons... this just seems like a short lived 'instant gratification' button that after a few presses... you find out you just want more of something else.
Frankly- bring on Gears of War 2 and don't worry about porting it over to 360. I'll take my corny Marcus lines over 'bohyaa bitch' over and over... and over.

@Padriac: I can help you out ^_^ Okies, once there was a system that released with nearly no good games at all, and no established franchises, it was completely new. Some people happened to buy the console anyway and needed something to do. There was one game that happened to be decent for its genre in general and great when compared to other console based FPS games that came before. The game was fun for multi-player gaming much like the previous console FPS king of the hill, Golden Eye. So enough people had fun with it to ignore how badly the second one sucked just so long as they had a chance to listen to 14 year olds talk about how big of fag the other players were while simulating dipping their scrote on others. Plus it gave them a reason to justify paying $52 a year to play online since there really weren't any games worth mentioning before that. Flash forward to the third title which was much better than the second and could be considered a proper sequel to the first, but in the end was still just pretty good as far as FPS games go. It seems that the game was born under a fortunate star because the powers saw fit to spend $10,000,000 simply to market the game and whip up a second coming like fervor. So basically, people think Halo 3 is awesome because they have never played a top quality FPS on a computer, were desperate in the past and nostalgic feelings for the franchise that saved their blackened monolith, and/or they are easily led by marketing.

@FiXXXerX: exactly how is Halo groundbreaking? Really? You do realize, now that I remember it, Dreamcast was the only other console that supported mouse and keyboard with Quake 3. It also had UT. It's not as if Quake, Unreal, halflife and Doom never graced a console before. the difference is UTIII on PS3 is the closest port of such a title that is actually comparable to the PC counterpart down to the controls AND mod support.
I see where your logic is coming from but I just can't agree with the idea that twitch shooters are dying. I fired up the original UT and it's still a blast to play. As a matter of fact if Id would re-release Quake 3: Team Arena on PS3 with mod support, I'd be all over it.
Regardless of what 360 want to believe, fps games and even 3rd person games like Gears suffer greatly because you're constantly locked into a dual analog setup. Its clumsy and forces you to use auto aim. Until MS supports mouse and keyboard or something better than dual analog, 360 fps games will always be gimped.

I'm not quite sure where all the dislike is coming in at, but this game has a) made me put down my xbox360 controller and finally pick up my *brand new* ps3 controller that i've had for almost a year and b) Allowed me to appreciate what a "modder" can add to a gameplay experience (downloaded the new maps). If this is any precursor to what we will be able to expect in the coming months and years from the ps3. Unreal has made me look at my ps3 different I'm sure i'll get flamed for all that but it's dead honest. I enjoy the game greatly and am not just some super fanboy.

UT3 is fun, and its strength really seems to be its sheer variety in vehicles. It really needs to mature a bit though, as the taunts and character designs still feel catered to 12 year olds. Sadly Gears of War was at least geared to maybe 16 year olds and people that watch Spike TV with no irony.
It feels stripped down from UT2k4, and oddly the QUAKE franchise far surpasses it in gameplay this time.
No new weapons, and missing the spider mine gun (which I never had a problem with as they move in a certain rhythm which was easy to avoid even in large numbers)is a little disappointing.
Seems like everyone just uses the rocket launcher 80-90 percent of the time.
Warfare seems a lot more confusing then Onslaught did with no extra fun as a result. I just rely on the computer to tell me where to attack rather than instantly knowing the strategy for node captures like in UT2k4. This will change for me in time, but I'm surprised they went this route knowing all they learned about the problems with Onslaught.
I still think it's a lot of fun. But have had several freezes connection errors, in game glitches. When i get killed on the Hoverboard, which I control with the sixaxis, and respawn I'm switched to using the sixaxis for on foot, and have to go to hoverboard then back to reset it. I doubt many people are using the motion controls for this, but I find it very intuitive.

With multiplayer experiences like TF2 and CoD4 out there, who really plays UT anymore? Honestly, the last time I tried to play, the server selection screen and abundance of servers with bots playing in them instead of real people was so abundant that I just gave up.
Ultimately though, I feel as though the days of the pointless frag-fest twitch shooter are slowing down and coming to an end.
Sure for PS3 and 360 owners the franchise may be relatively successful, and thats because theres nothing quite like it on the systems yet. But with such a wide selection of FPS and action titles on the 360 who would choose UT3? I understand on the PS3, because what do they have? Resistance? and what, Warhawk? Which both seem to be decent online... but aren't anything ground breaking. So if this is the only other choice then why not, I'm sure it would do well regardless, its a recognizable name on a console with as of yet, no real recognizable games.
I dunno, just my 2cents... hehe

To me it's very obvious that UT3 is a much better balanced and "pure" multiplayer shooter than the likes of Halo 3 or other similar shooters. Yes it's the same game as before (and as countless others) but the multiplayer shooter is basically like a sport at this point. Basketball is basketball every year, chess is chess, etc.

@huxle: yeah, I agree. I would never take a console gamer's word that UT is a dumb or dead franchise. That's ignorance talking as PC gamers know that UT is one of the great FPS series ever made. All we need for the old flamewar arguments is a kick-ass Quake 5: Team Arena and we're all set.
Also, Gears of War should NEVER be mentioned before UT. Gears of War came much later in Epics history than UT and UT already set the world on fire with UT2004 long before Gears of War saw the light of day.
UTIII on PS3 is a great game, with a proper control scheme it truly shows how FPS games are meant to be played. Not just on PC and console but anywhere. It controls better than any FPS on any other console bar none, 360 included...Gears included, CoD 4 included...because it supports mouse and keyboard. That's not a matter of opinion, that's a matter of fact.

@Winterbringer: I totally disagree and to avoid a flamewar, i will leave it at that.
I've been playing UTIII on PS3 a lot since it debuted. I love it personally. I runs well at a good framerate most of the time, it controls well and I love the vehicles and modes that are offered. It's a showcase for the PS3 for sure and with M/kb support, it finally addresses the biggest flaw of console FPS games...dual analog "I can't hit shit without auto-aim" controls.
I've played, UT UT2003 and UT 2004 on my rig and I can say that UT2004 is still better overall since it offered more modes and more maps but the great thing about UTIII are the development tools. One of the reasons I continue to play UT is because of the mod community, which consoles have never truly supported until now. I played the original UT for three years past the point of purchase for that aspect alone. If the PS3/PC version gets similar support from the mod community, the PS3 version will get love for a long time to come.
If I can learn the tools, I'd even get it a go and try to make skins as good as the old Quake 2 mods. It was so deep you could get Darth Vader, Papa Smurf, Optimus Prime and even Yoshi skinned in Quake too with sound effects. Now that's support you can't ignore and it's all possible with UTIII.
Perfect? not quite. But is UTIII a piece of crap. I think not.

UT3 = awesome. A few gripes about some of the changes they made (no assault mode makes me cry) but overall an awesome game. I've always preferred the UT series to a lot of the more mainstream FPS's such as Battlefield and COD, both of which can be fun in short doses but get boring fast. Not many other games give you the fast paced adrenaline pumping action that Unreal Tournament gives.

@FlashIV:
"botched" is a good phrase for Epic's work. They never polish a title, only the engine. See all the issues with gears, never mind previous Unreal titles. This is why i've grown to love Halo3 despite being a devout UT player, it's so complete and rounded a package.
UT3 was entirely unfinished when it hit the shelves for the PC, and by including gamespy they just insulted their community.
Still, i desperately hope they shove a demo onto live so i can polish my dodge-multi-combo & mid-air goop skills.

UT3 is a total piece of crap anyway. It's so depressing what it became. UT2k4 was so much more...

Mark Rein is known for speaking some minor BS in the past, so I wouldn't write off his "word" as the definitive truth. They're trying to make UT3 a killer app on PS3, much like they made Gears of War a killer app on Xbox 360. They've yet to see that success, so they're trying to sell PS3's to make the installed base larger, so that their game reaches a larger audience.

@tkat: It's kind of hilariously stupid that people are saying that, considering that the gameplay is fundamentally EXACTLY what you find in Halo and Gears of War.
It's like saying that my car's automatic transmission is better than your car's automatic transmission. It's exactly the same fucking thing. People who rag on UT while lauding Halo are just fetishizing their own likes and dislikes.

You've gotta love Rein. All that 360 smack talk and bashing just to try & push Epic's two other titles (Gears PC & UT3 PS3) only to have both titles fall flat on their backs.
Now after dubbing the 360 version of UT3 as the inferior one, he's going have to fabricate some kind of story to turn heads on title. Because by the time UT3 is released for 360, noone will give a damn. You brought this all on yourself Rein.

I bought it simply because I beat every (Blu-ray Disc) game I own on the PS3. It's really fun but I can see how it could garner a big "meh" from people looking for something different.

Spielegrotte.de (in Germany) lists the game as coming February 29th, they are usually pretty reliable as they only list games when the wholesaler lets them preorder.
Oh, and the scan is from the german mag 360 Live, [www.360-live.de]

Give me Unreal 3, please.
And what's with the people calling this a "dumb shooter?" Do you think you're actually *insulting* the game by calling it that, even when it was designed to be about fast and furious gameplay?
If you prefer slower paced, tactical shooters, you don't have to denounce this as another failure of "teh INNOVASHUNS." There are plenty of people who enjoy this, like myself.
But again - Unreal 3, please.

I can't stand FPS with a Joystick that is nuts, have fun with that one. UT3 works very well on just about any older graphics card, they did an amazing job optimizing it. I had it running on my vanilla 6800 very nicely. The Orange box runs with everything on high on my old computer which is nice. UT3 had a lot of the eye candy turned down to medium but it was steady. I had to finally bite the bullet and get a 8800 gt when I saw one on sale. Not for this game but really for crysis which after playing the demo is kinda boring. Meh. Oh well I can enjoy Bioshock and The Whitcher in all their glory. And no don't go on about how you need an expensive system to run games with a little smart upgrading it wont cost much more than 100$ or so a year to make your computer a nice gaming rig.

EPIC's still selling their UE3 to devs. Around the time Gears was being released they were all over the 360 building up hype for their engine(like they should be). When they sold enough licenses to 360 devs it was time to sell to PS3 devs. The problems that EPIC's own parent company, midway, have had with UE3 doesnt help them in the SK lawsuit.

Yah, for Halo-type fans, this will be a huge amount of fun. I'm not a big fan of the twitchy action games, and even I like UT3 a lot. The maps come out really beautifully on my good, but not top-of-the line PC.
All the old standby guns are the same, but the graphics have been vamped up so that they look great. When you shoot the shock ball, there's a really gorgeous and satisfying shock wave. Very cool.
There are vehicles in UT3 too. And I haven't tried it, but when you're playing in campaign mode, you can issue squad commands, which is nice. When you're close to your squad and activate the link gun, they do too. It's cute, and it reflects the nice improvements to the AI they made.
And it's pretty bug-free on the PC. Played for a week with only one loading mishap, I haven't had an in-game freeze yet.

You'd think that epic's first priority would be in getting the game onto the one remaining platform where is has a chance to sell well.

So their whole art and programming teams are working on a localization? Right.
After playing the PC demo, though, I'm not really anticipating it at all. It really is just the same old UT with a fresh coat of normal mapping, and the game moves so fast you don't really get to appreciate that new paint anyway. Good if you like the series, but otherwise it has a severe case of the been-there-done-thats.

I've actually had a lot of fun with it. Kinda bought it reluctantly, but it's a very solid game, and probably the Best (last?) Unreal to date. It moves at Quake 3 speed ont he PS3 instead of lightning speed on the PC and I prefer it that way. I used the joystick for about an hour and then switched to mouse. No going back.

Hey, why the need to phrase that post like jerks? The PC version is amazingly scaleable to old hardware and awesome, I'd call the ps3 version the best multiplayer available on that platform, and on the 360, where the UE3 engine is already proven and where live is dominant, the multiplayer will be amazing.

At first, I was excited to play this game on my 360. I figured i would be GoW on crack. But the reason why i liked Gears so much was because it took a lot of teamwork and skill (manipulation of the many bugs) to get ahead. In UT it seems like a Run and Gun who cares if we die type of game play. The Delay has one it more harm than good. The hype is dead.
