Bash: You should speak English to him almost exclusively so he gets a really good grip on the language. My mother is a Cuban immigrant (came here when Castro came to power) but my spanish is terrible. I wish she had spoken it more at home, all my cousins are very fluent but my brother and I are not. While I sure most Japanese are pretty decent at English he has a chance to be truly fluent in both. (We had a Japanese student stay with us briefly this summer, her English was OK)

Oh god, despite living in the UK all my life my parents only spoke to me in Spanish, their point of view was; I was gonna learn English anyway, might as well make Spanish my first language.

Now that I think about it, it turned out to be a very wise choice...

I wish I would have been taught a second language while I was still learning my first. I can not recall anyone in my school that could speak sentences in two languages when they were the same age as Mini-Bash. Sure, we knew a few numbers in an additional language but had no idea the context or proper way to use them to make a sentence. This could also have more to do with the fact that I grew up in "the sticks".

@surrealistgesture: Holy god, march of the pigs 7/8 beat would MURDER me on drums. But wish is a great nomination for the vocals alone. I didn't really dig "hand that feeds" when it came out, but turns out it's one of my fav's in rock band, so any more nin would just kick.
I actually got the chance to meet Trent in a boston back alley before a show a few years ago. He was quiet, but very nice...but a step down, Bash? never.

@greeble: Oh my gods so I'm not the only one. My father is from Argentina and I know very little spanish, ok more on the lines of none just some phrases that I remember from Classes. I really wish I was fluent in spanish then maybe I can understand his side of the family.

There was a study I read awhile ago stating that children will only master a 'foreign' language if they need it to communicate with someone they care about (ex. parents). Their peers are actually a stronger influence on their lingustic leanings.

Of course there are always exceptions and it can't hurt to try and start the dual language hardwiring!

Wife speaks strictly Japanese to the kids. I speak English to the kids. Result: Fluency in both languages for them. Often when I stumble in my Japanese, they transform into my little translator 'bots FTW!
