Wii To Bypass Lifetime GameCube Sales Any Minute Now
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 2:02 PM on January 25, 2008
Nintendo's financial results for the previous quarter, released earlier today, were nothing less than impressive. What's even potentially more impressive was how quickly it appears the Wii will overtake lifetime-to-date sales of its predecessor, the Nintendo GameCube. According to Nintendo's own numbers, the GameCube had sold 21.72 million units over the course of its six year-plus lifespan, as of December 31, 2007. The Wii, just 14 months on the market, has sold 20.13 million, putting the waggle-box a mere 1.59 million units behind the 'Cube.
In Wii terms, that ain't nothin'.
With Nintendo now manufacturing 1.8 million Wiis a month and seemingly selling every on of those consoles, it won't be long until the Wii overtakes the GameCube, if it hasn't already.

Yeah, Elebits was definitely an overlooked game... I actually only got it for Christmas and actually beat it before I played much of Galaxy.
Don't get me wrong though - Galaxy is the better game and I beat that too.

I still can't believe that 4 years ago, I actually walked into a department store, approached a clerk and uttered the words "I would like to buy a Nintendo Gamecube". I owned neither a PS2 or Xbox at the time.
To it's credit, the thing is solid as a rock and I've never had any hardware issues whatsoever.

man, do your thing, wii. Im proud nintendo found an angle & are quite healthy these days. but truth be told, so far, i had more love for my gamecube, and was sad to see such a great system not do well last gen. Besides the usual quality first-party lineup, i had eternal darkness, RE4, bomberman and numerous others that i still play here & there, imports as well. I hope to say that in a few years with my wii as well, but for what its worth, gamecube, you done good, little guy.

I'm only happy the Wii is successful because I hope that fact brings more (good) games. These mini-games are getting annoying. As are the ports. When we (hopefully) start seeing less cash-in games then I will be happy. Nintendo needs a ridiculous exclusive besides it's first party. It needs a GTA. And, if your are going to keep porting your ass off, why not make it good ports.....I WANT Marvel vs. Capcom 2 dammit!!!

I still have to wonder why casual/non-traditional gamers are buying it. Is the Wii really a cleverly disguised hypno-toad because every time I ask someone why they bought it they can never give a straight answer. That only encompasses the portion of people that don't view this media as one of their hobby/pass times.
I mean I do get that it's the hot item but it certainly isn't the quality of the library selling the machine. Unless we're taking the idea of good games for granted and those alpha moms EGM had on their podcast that one time really do represent a majority of the Wii crowd.

It's because most of the anti-Wii posts are 360 and PS3 fanboys, who envy the Wii's commercial success. The Wii has SMG, Zack and Wiki, RE4, Twilight Princess, Trauma Center 1 and 2, Umbrella Chronicles, Super Paper Mario, Metroid 3, and No More Heroes. Quite a nice list of exclusive AAA titles are available on the Wii, in its first year. Probably more quality than the 360 had in year one. If people think it's dominating now, just wait till next year, hehe.

And people b!tch about the hardware shortages. Wii is tracking at PS2 levels and their previous effort was nearly a failure if it weren't for Nintendo's 1st party software to continually bail them out.
How could anyone have expected such a dramatic paradigm shift? Their competition laughed them off like a joke at times, claiming that they didn't think of Nintendo as their competition.
Who would gamble millions of dollars on something so untested by making 25 or 30 Million units in the 1st year? They made a pretty liberal estimate of 13 million for the year and have had to continually up the estimate.
This is why there is a shortage.
Nintendo has changed the face of gaming possibly forever. Whether that's a good thing or not is another issue but with 20Mil units under their belt Nintendo is relevent now more than ever.

What I really find interesting is that the NES was designed as a mainstream hardware that would bring games to more people and if you look at those retro commercials posted every now and then, it looked like it was aiming for everyone: There was no concept of gamer to them. console wars of the late 80's and 90's, the idea of hardcore gaming and technology kind of led Nintendo astray. I believe that the Gamecube was supposed to be a return to form in making that machine with the mainstream appeal but it had a mismatch of marketing and software. The Wii really reeled it all in. Nintendo finally found a way to bring games into the casual setting thereby creating a true evolution of the original NES. It did this by offering the kind of games that appeal to the mainstream in a package that didn't scream intimidating technology. They also realized that they had to let go of the hardcore somewhat to grab the new influx: They realized that they couldn't be all thing to all people but they could be something special to a new group of people who are embracing the tech boom with products like the cell phone and ipod. Though the Wii isn't my first choice of console, I can appreciate the journey Nintendo has made to get to a point like this. I honestly thought they might go the way of Sega (not likely though with the DS business working) right up to the Wii's launch but if you look at the size of the gamble they took, they deserve a payout like this. The Wii and DS have created quite the synergy for themselves and soon we will be hearing the DS doing the same to Gameboy numbers.

WTB a thread about Nintendo or the Wii without ten million people coming in to bitch about the 'non existent games' or 'lack of third party support'. What the hell, people? Before the Wii was actually launched all you could hear for miles around was how many developers jumped on board and were excited to start making games for Wii. Now it's the new black to trash their third party stuff. It takes time to make great games and it will take time to develop for the Wii, for obvious reasons. But let somebody say something about the PS3's 'lack of games' and you'll get WTFPWND like this: 'Geez (insert name here), I thought the 'ps3 has no gamezorz' meme died already. Give it a rest.' YOU people give it a rest. I thought the 'jajaja it's like two gamecubes duct taped together and it has no gamezzzz!1lawlz' meme died already. Give it a rest.

Anyway, no matter how you look at it selling 20 million consoles in less than a year and a half is pretty staggering. There's no question their new strategy is working commercially, even if it doesn't necessarily make all gamers happy.

I know this info. will never be released (if it's even available), but I'd be curious to know where Wii sales would stand based only on sales to gamers who bought the GameCube, PS2, PS3, Xbox and/or Xbox 360. In other words, how many have sold to people like me (or should I say "mii"?) as opposed to people who are buying their first console (senior citizens and children 12 and under). I had thought most Nintendo fans had picked up the system, but with Mario Galaxy, Zelda and Metroid Prime being dramatically outsold by Wii Fit and Mario Party, I'm starting to suspect that I'm in a minority of hardcore gamers who stuck with the big N and picked up a Wii (just as I did a GameCube, N64, SNES, and NES).

@ARboom: Yes, GameCube finished the last generation 'dead last' but it was only a few million behind Xbox - approx 22 million vs. approx 24 million. There really wasn't much difference between the success of those two systems: Xbox did better in the US and Europe, GC did better in Japan, and each sold about 1/5 of PS2 numbers.
Given another few months, Wii will probably be overtaking Xbox sales as well. And yes, it's fairly impressive that a console overtakes two of its previous-generation counterparts in 18 months - even if the 'winner' of the previous generation is still way ahead in the distance, and may never be surpassed.

@ Black Dog Howls
I bought my Wii because it's the only reliable Metroid Prime: Corruption adaptor I could find for my TV. Then I discovered Devils Crush on the VC and my life was complete.
I have intense affection for my GameCube, though. Couple weeks after I got my Wii, I dug out the GCN and reconnected it, just so I could play GCN games--Alien Hominid, initially--on my second-favorite Dead Grey Console.
At the moment, due to my oddball tastes, the Wii is lagging well behind my GameCube and my Dreamcast, but that's wholly to be expected--I've had years to cherrypick those latter libraries, and it's only this week that No More Heroes finally came out. In the meantime, the Wii let me mess around with a raft of generations I actually missed: 16/32/64 bits all passed this guy right on by, so I've had fun dipping into those eras.

@ARboom: How wrong you are. The Holiday season that the Xbox360 came out, the Gamecube actually made the most profits that season out of all the consoles. Did it sell the most games? No. But, it made the most profits. And that wasn't the only year the Gamecube made the most profits. It may seem like the Gamecube didn't do well to some people, but it actually was a nice little cash-cow for Nintendo. I like to think of the Gamecube as a savings fund that went towards the Wii. =)

Its slightly impressive they did it so quickly, but seriously, how could a console NOT surpass GameCube sales? That mofo finished the previous generation dead Last.

Poor Gamecube. I feel bad, it's the only Nintendo console I never owned. (Yes... I have a Virtual Boy...)

I'm getting the image that the GameCube is Lonestar and Barf, while the Wii is the Spaceball ship passing them at ludicrous speed.

These numbers are international, right? And I think it's about time for another helpful bar graph comparing sales across all consoles. Love those damn things.

Hmm one system is out six years and another only one, yet the system with six years has more quality titles?
Color me surprised!
@SONICgoose:
PS3 has less AAA and Xbox barely has more, and it has a year head start.

Strangely enough I just ordered a 40gb ps3 today and stuck my 30 VC game Wii onto ebay, whilst also buying a cheap 'Cube for my old classics like WindWaker and Ikaruga. As much as I love my TurbGrafx shoot-em-ups the lack of play in general the Wii gets has disappointed me.
(interesting thing to try - on any TurboGrafx shooting game like R-Type try keep the fire button down for autofire on the Wii remote, which on R-Type would charge your force bolt or whatever it's called, then move around a bit - up and down continuously works nice, discharge the bolt, and now press and hold the button down again to charge another bolt whilst still moving around up and down, you will not charge any bolts but fire bursts of individual bullets. This occasionally game breaking fault in the TG emulator/Wii remote/bluetooth or wireless can be reproduced on ANY TG shooting game including Blazing Lasers. Extremely annoying when you try to shoot bolts through the mess of green mines that is R-Type level 4 only to shoot little pellets)

The Nintendo fanboy in me tried to delude the fact the Gamecube sold incredibly well, but there's no denying it now. That console did badly. *lol* I worked at GAME the year the slim PS2 released and that Christmas I must've sold through all of the Xboxes, all of the PS2's and not sold a single GameCube. I actually tried to sell to someone, but int he end I couldn't do it. I had to be honest and tell the dude he was better off with a PS2.
