Work and Play: A Peek Inside the Lives of Gaming's Greatest Readers
Posted by Tori Floyd at 5:00 AM on January 23, 2008
When Brian first told me what I was going to be doing, I'll admit I was a little overwhelmed at the thought of going through potentially hundreds of photos, and making them presentable for all the world to see. But now I understand why Crecente called the first gallery his "labour of love". It was really exciting getting hear from you guys and receiving stories about your gaming setups from all over the world. I'm a little sad I couldn't include all the great stories you guys provided me with, but I think many of these pictures speak for themselves.
I hope you all enjoy looking through these galleries as much as I enjoyed putting them together!
To check out the desks and gaming setups of big names in gaming like David Jaffe, Sid Meier, and Penny Arcade's "Gabe" and "Tycho", visit the original gallery: Work and Play: A Peek Inside the Lives of Gaming's Greatest (with updates always being added, including new photos this week from Tommy Tallarico and Ted Brown, Lead Level Designer for Buzz Monkey Software.).

@Wolfkin: you should've seen it a couple of week's ago before that television. it was worse. it's not so much of a gaming set-up as it is a TV with a Wii and PS2.

Wow on that US one with the theater seating and intranet cafe style back row...
I would have sent mine in but it isn't terribly exciting. Nobody wants to see stacks of white and brown boxes (although I'm sure most "geeks and nerds" would love to carry away those boxes).
Can't wait to get my own place (well I have one, just needs to get built first, move in date is sometime in 2011). I have the den planned out as my "geek out spot" for my figures, toys and such (trying to keep it confined to a small space). The living room will just be a nice sleek entertainment center full of bookshelves of games. I think my collection is nearing (or perhaps surpased) the 400 game mark (with games dating back to the NES).

I wish I would of sent in my setup, but it'd be difficult since all my consoles earlier than the Gamecube are upstairs, and last generations plus my Wii are downstairs. (My upstairs setup is pretty sweet though, I have two TVs, while my downstairs has the big screen.) Once I move out (I'm a university student, okay :P ) and get a small cramped apartment, I'll have no choice but to move everything together.

That was an interesting gallery. I sort of wish that I had sent in a picture, but a HDTV and a glowing blue mouse on a desk with no other evidence of gaming and a few Bruce Lee posters makes for a boring picture, and my room isn't nice enough to give a full 360 view in order to show everything. So I'll explain it quickly! Sets of shelves filled with ps1/2/3 games. Drawers filled with dvds and ps2 games. Piles of books everywhere since I ran out of shelving space before university. A dresser covered in books and anime dvds. A table covered with Magic cards. A closet filled with Nintendo's products since the 80's. TV with comp, ps3, and Wii hidden, yet accessable in various places near the tv (all well ventilated.) Then a chair and a waterbed. Enjoy!
I've got to say, some of them were really quite nice. Others looked like your average dorm/room.

Am I the only one here with kids? I see these pictures and all I can think is that there's so much gear so close to the ground within reach of little hands that want to break the grown up toys.
Mine is in the Canada group 3rd row 3rd pic. See, speakers on the wall... and a cabinet with all the gear out of reach.

@Duophonix: :D The apartment I live in is about 100 years old. Seriously it's from like 1908, they built it after the big fire of San Francisco burned down most of the city. It still uses individual wires for + and - voltage. Anyway, with a setup like this you never know when something is gonna burst into flame!
@Candlejack: Thanks, I got it during Black Friday. It's a Sharp 42" AQUOS.

It is more like a college crib if anything. An HDTV with a PS3, dvd recorder and a psp laying next to it. Then my PC is on a normal IKEA desk I think lol with 3 small speakers, a normal flat computer screen and the comp itself doesn't have a nice extravagant case or anything and is just big. So I'm ashamed lol

(double-post... sorry, just read the second page of comments...)
To anyone who thinks theirs wasn't included even though it was submitted on time: I didn't see mine in the thumbnails, but when I went into the actual gallery, and cycled through them one by one with the "next" button, mine came up eventually.

@Scazza: Actually the main reason I started hanging Wiimotes is that I got paranoid that if I just tossed 'em somewhere, they might rest on a button, gradually draining batteries while not in use. Me and my buddy share a general paranoia that Wiimotes drain batteries while turned off. Who knows. Nice basement setup btw.
My computer desk is right next to my TV, but it was messy beyond repair, so I kept it out of the pic. Also, the most gaming action my computer saw in 2007 was Desktop Tower Defense.

I just wanted to chime in and say that this is a really cool gallery. Really fun to look at all the set-ups and even see my own in it. (Middle one in Germany)
Oh and to the German dude with the orange gaming room: Where did you get that awesome Simpsons/Sopranos poster ? I'd really like one too ;)
Once again thanks to Kotaku for showing us how people game around the globe.

With the possible exception of the danish and swiss ones, there isn't one that looks remotely like the swanky rigs people play on Wii commercials. Do we just not measure up?

Man i wish I had something presentable, my setup is organized in a practical way. Now if this were manga show and tell, I could take a picture of my shelf a.k.a. wall of manga.

I guess I'll submit mine soon. I was too busy trying to actually clean my room up, where I have everything but the PS3 and Wii. My room wasn't exactly presentable last week because I was rearranging things.

Wow, only Kuro and I submitted ours from Japan? Witz, my setup is likely simpler than yours, *deep voice of command* Shhhhhaaarrrreeee!
Currently saving up for a bigger screen, but with OLEDs and other new technology coming out soon, I'm on the fence.
And like everyone else, there are some awesome setups out there that make me incredibly jealous but also put me in awe at the dedication you have to making a kick ass entertainment room!

Anyway, to set the scene: The picture I sent in that wasn't worthy of inclusion had both of my dogs (posing perfectly), a glowing lightsaber, a Buffy the Vampire poster, a plasma television, 2 GameCubes, 1 Xbox, 1 Xbox 360, 1 Dreamcast and a Wii. And carpeting and stuff. I'm so bummed it didn't show up. Does Tori have a thing against canines and/or Jedi Knights?

@user3:
I sent it in twice, because the first time I sent it I forgot to say what country I lived in. So unless it somehow got lost twice. But there was nothing offensive in the picture at all (unless Tori really does hate dogs), so maybe it went into his/her junk mail folder? I'm hoping it will still go up, even though at this point nobody will really see it anyway.

i already supsected it was from somewhere outside my current reach. It totally is a Sopranos parody. Great show by the way although it failed on German TV.

@Kusa: Take it from me, plan ahead. Go ahead and prewire everything you want before they hang drywall. I wired 7.1 setup in my family room, 5.1 in my play room, and ethernet in all the bedrooms, the family room, and play room. It will save you alot of trouble in the long run, plus it will look a lost classier with everything in wall.

Took me a while to find the digital camera, so here's my bedroom setup (for the two people still reading this post). I made due with existing furniture.
My Room!
Notes:
Altair on a high perch where he belongs. He fell once and broke his leg...which oddly never happened in the game. I glued him back together.
Big Daddy on the HDTV PVR. He also fell and broke his drill. Glued back together.
Batman. Protects me from the HDTV's evil superbright LED while I sleep.
On my walls (not pictured) I have the four TF2 posters, the PA Fruit Fucker Prime LE Cell and a "New Robot Smell" poster by Adam Hughes made exclusive for the Silver Snail comic shop in downtown Toronto.
I cleaned up my games and movies for display.
Movies: The Fountain, Letters from Iwo Jima, King Kong, Planet Earth, Bourne Ultimatum.
And it's kinda blurry but the astute may also notice the still missing "Inside Xbox" button from the 360 menu.

some of these are quite nice. yet others couldn't find it in themselves to not clean up at least a little bit before taking a picture? sure, a controller here and there or a games packaging isn't bad, but chips, crumbs, other bits of stuff best left unidentified... oh well. a gamers area is his (or her) sanctuary. however you wish to keep that area in a state of order (or disarray) is entirely up to you.

@Duophonix: glad to help support you dude! Hehe, I write about games so they kind of pay for themselves - and then get refunded through tax ;)
@john2p0: Well, I would have cleaned up except that my friend was over and I'm lazy as hell. Usually there isn't so much junk littered around but we just had a really hard night drinking and gaming. Be thankful the floor isn't covered in broken glass from a bottle I accidentally dropped the night previous haha.
My room
Ok. So what you've got is a lazy ass friend sitting on a PS2 beanbag chai, in front of a three seater red couch you can't see, where my ASUS G1S laptop is sitting.
There's a BenQ24" HD capable monitor sitting on an old TV cabinet, with a Logitech 5500 Digital 5.1 stereo, PS3 and 360, plus a display cabinet full of gaming shwag.
Two old Coral speakers became my tables cause I couldn't throw them away, there's also a samurai and a bar fridge, which are both necessities.
A PSP sits next to a beer and munchies.
What you can't see are two half built / half modded PCs sitting behind the couch, some sound gear, including mics and a mixing desk, as well as all the DVDs and games hidden in a cupboard behind.
Ahh, years of living at home paid off in stuff :D
