XFPS Rate Up Adapter Is Available For PS3
Posted by Mark Wilson at 7:40 AM on January 29, 2008
While the PS3 is already pretty friendly to most mouse and keyboard setups, the XFPS Rate Up Adaptor (formerly just for the Xbox 360) is a peripheral that allows you to remap SIXAXIS controls to your stubborn PC ways of old and control any game as you would a computer title. It's completely plug and play and supports 95% of keyboards and mice on the market. Wait, we just read this thing is $US 100. Seriously? Maybe you could justify the purchase when combined with a backward compatible PS3 that could add mouse control to PS2 titles. But we're betting that $US 100 would probably look better sitting somewhere inside your PC.

You can get it for around $100 AU.

$100 is way, way, waaaayyyy too expensive for that functionality. Also, for that kind of money, I would need a guarantee that it worked like a fucking dream with every FPS I wanted to play. Is there mouse lag? I use a wireless laser mouse, is it compatible?
I'm always dubious of these semi-sactioned peripherals. I'd be much more comfortable if it was first-party (and, say, the price of a controller instead of $100).

I like FPSs on PC and I like them on console. But I will *never* buy a console FPS that lets people play with a mouse. What is the point?!
There's a place where KB/M belong: your computer.

I'd really love to know how well it works though; if PS3 mouse and keyboard support was really well done whether through these adapters or through the existing support, the PS3 turns from a really expensive console into a really cheap gaming PC.

Each video game development company that disabled keyboard/mouse in their FPS should pay to have this bundled with their game.
No idea if the mouse-->joystick conversion is quality, though. Probably depends on the game.
I played Goldeneye with an N64 emulator and set up the mouse to play with, and it still wasn't up to par with even Quake 1 mouse control.

Playing COD4, I often want to scream at the 360 controller, and pine for the smooth lovin' of a good ol' optical mouse.
But do I pine for it with the strength of $100USD? ...probably not.

has anyone played with these? Do they really work? what I mean is not do they work in the sense of being functional but do they work in the sense of making console FPS's play like PC ones? Or does everything feel clumsy, a bit off, like a lot is being lost in the console->keyboard translation?

I've always preferred keyboard and mouse over controller but, that said, I just feel that games like Call of Duty and Unreal play better with a controller. I doubt I could ever go back to playing games, other than real-time strategies, with a keyboard and mouse.

@BOMxAgonyxScenex: it works with every game. if you are someone who just doesn't like controllers but wants the no hassle/low cost of owning a console instead of a gaming rig, this is well worth it.
I know someone who was an avid pc gamer but got one and a 360 after his pc become antiquated too many times.

@Daobaz: Not only is it truly better in every way, but your ability to improve with it is much greater; The maximum skill attainable using a mouse is lightyears beyond what you can do with a controller, even with an incredible amount of practice.

Be VERY weary of this product.
Every review (for the 360 version) I've come across has said that this thing works for crap in terms the most important aspect... aiming with the mouse.
PC Gamers enjoy the KB/Mouse combo because it is simply better for FPS's, hands down. There is no counter argument to that. FPS on consoles have built in aimbot to assist you for christ sake.

@kw4k: yeah just search for any review of the product. apparently the dead zone is so gnarly that in order for it to be useful it must be modded with a deal of soldering with a smartfrag adapter and even then players report that the controls are wonky and sometimes lag.
just do a google search for xfps sniper, there are some customer reviews that say it's great, but for every one of those there's 3 stories of it being close to unusable.
the sniper model supposedly cuts down on the deadzone the most i guess, so if you like spending the cash on a low revision wired xbox controller and smartfrag and spend some DIY time with about 150$ worth of junk you bought then give it a spin.
and everyone saying you prefer dual analog to kb/m, whaaaa??!!!?!?!? theres no disputing that if xbox allowing kb/m support then noone with a dual analog controller would ever play online since they wouldnt stand a chance against the n00biest kb/m player. im certain that's why no decent kb/m set-up for the mainstream console has ever or will ever see the light of day.

I love controlers on Systems, and i love Keyboard/Mouse on PC. If someone is going to buy the Orange box for PS3 or 360 and then complain that they want a Keyboard/Mouse. I say go pick up a cheap PC, you can get a PC that will run the Orange Box or Unreal 3 for around $500-$600.

KB+M is boring, why have such a bulky system as a keyboard for a console FPS game that would use about 1/4 at most of the buttons? The keyboard isn't designed for gaming and so isn't really the best choice but while the mouse also isn't designed for it the mouse does have great accuracy so works well. Simple joypad or huge KB+M, I'd rather just use the joypad.
I saw a tournemant of KB+M vs Controller of Shadowrun and the controller won so I don't really think the mouse is that much better. I know it probably is a tad better but I don't need to buy a KB+M for a miniscule difference that just PLAYING WELL would make up for. PC nerds need to stop talking trash about controllers.

I bought one of these for the xbox360 about a year ago and promptly sold it on ebay 1-2 days later for the same price I paid for it (back then, it was a hefty $80 or so). These converters aren't worth even $20 in my opinion. I personally HATE using controllers for FPSes. As others have said, they gimp the user. However, while these converters seem like a godsend, they don't feel like a genuine KB+M setup as the converter is reading your mouse movement as if it were an analog stick, not a real mouse. So the sensitivity is definitely off. The idea has tons of potential, but I warn you that if you buy this at $100, you may end up cursing yourself for buying it. But hey, thank god for ebay. ;)

@-sigil-:
I agree and there could be far better solutions for FPS controls than a keyboard or a gamepad. The issue is that game controller manufacturers are just introducing cosmetic chages to controllers and not actually innovating anymore (MadCatz I'm looking at you). The only company that is doing something interesting in game controllers is Splitfish.
They are famous for the EgeFX/FragFX but they also have a few other cool ideas in the works where they use a trackball for aiming rather than a stick. Supposedly it works far better. Unfortunately Microsoft is obstinate about allowing anything other than a traditional gamepad for the 360.

A complete waste of cash. Or at least the 360 version is. I purchased the original for the 360 for almost $100. it was an abysmal piece of garbage. The manufacturers, who smartly gave it to 3rd party suckers to sell, failed to mention that the units will not work properly with 80% of the mice out there nor can you rebind the axis sticks. there is also polling rate issues, sensitivity issues and an issue where the unit simply stops working. The company soon took it off their front page and buried it and refused to take responsibility (instead referring to their vendors) and stopped replying to support emails a few months after it shipped. The new version they came out with isnt even shown on their home site which I assume is to cover their scamming asses should a class-action suit come up.
In order to get it to work as advertised someone came up with a mod that requires a considerable amount of time, soldering experience and another cash outlay.
Someone will eventually get a mouse emulator that works but it won't be these shysters. Stay away.

After trying the XFPS Pro on 360 (with SmartFrag Joy) I'm refusing to touch an XFPS product any time in the future unless it's to completely obliterate one of their products into a fine powder of plastic and silicon. They should send me one of these for free just for being jipped by the 360 XFPS. I wish I spent that money on a Razer Lachesis to replace my aging Razer Copperhead, or purchase the upcoming game "My Horse and Me"..
